  1. AN ARRIVAL TO
  2. the true meaning of my name in a language i do not know
  3. was never taught by father & though that means as
  4. little as the ignorance of a moon does to a flaring star i
  5. search for the meaning of my name in every baseball player
  6. that shares it in every misspelling & i have learned that i
  7. am only the second of my name, not even a junior, & that
  8. this denial of an identity is all that I need to earn one
  9. i have learned that in sanskrit kala or kali means black
  10. & kala or kali also means a fixed point in time – a
  11. death – a unit of one hundred forty-four seconds or the
  12. one hundred forty-four black reflections of myself that
  13. stare at me, disappointed, when i practice my broken spanish
  14. in the mirror i have learned that my childhood nickname
  15. of papi came from mi bisabuela that she cried for her dead
  16. father & the next day i was born & joined her in the crying
  17. i have learned the greatness of time & the greatness of
  18. black are one & the same that my second godfather
  19. was Heraclitus that it is normal to feel deathly homesick
  20. even when one does not have a place to call home
  21. have learned it is okay to call my own skin home
  22. have learned that the most painful way to sleep is
  23. to be curled in the shape of a border or in memory
  24. of a father that a sleeping body is only the
  25. premature inscription of an elegy & a dream is
  26. remembered only as the lyrics of a dirge & that
  27. my lungs do not resent me when they do not work
  28. that they are as tired of – as i am that it is
  29. okay for something not to have a mean
  30. -ing that the suffix of -ing means the
  31. expressing of a verb therefore that it
  32. is an action to have meaning that it is
  33. an action to be learning to be speaking
  34. to be creating & to be breathing, that my
  35. lungs grow tired of performing their duty
  36. & therefore that it is okay for me to grow
  37. tired of living & that the only thing in
  38. this world that must have meaning is a name
  39. maybe that is why i cannot forget my
  40. one hundred forty-four dead siblings
  41. why i cannot live without wondering
  42. how my name will be remembered
  43. after i die & i have learned that
  44. i want to be remembered in the ekphrastic
  45. & buried beneath a tombstone written
  46. in the language of my father
