- Razorhat: Anyway, thoughts on the first star wars:
- Razorhat: I liked it.
- Razorhat: Overall the plot was kinda predictable (Han coming back at the end), but it wasn't bad.
- Razorhat: Dialogue wasn't bad, I finally have seen nearly all star wars quotes I know in context, so that was nice(edited)
- Razorhat: The special effects, though cheesy and funny now, were really good for the end of the 70's
- Razorhat: Some things I didn't like though were the fact that the movie started with a paragraph of backstory stuff
- Razorhat: Couldn't they have found a way to incorporate this in the movie itself, by having the characters mention it, or even better, allude to it and let the viewer figure it out for themselves?
- SpankyWorks: Did you get that fan version where they spliced a bunch of copies together to try and preserve the original?
- Razorhat: The fighting choreography wasn't the greastest either. The battle between Obi Wan and Darth Vader was more funny than serious
- Razorhat: no, watched it on netflix
- Razorhat: There were also some strange things in the plot, like the officers not shooting down an escape pod from a vessel they were currently boarding. Like what, is a single laser too expensive?
- Razorhat: Luke consistenly refusing to take Han's advice and then at the end asking him to take part in a war while the entire movie Han has literally been saying that he doesn't want anything to do with it and would rather live than die doing stupid things
- Razorhat: Also, how bad is security on the death star when an old man in robes can walk around the entire place and sabotage some power port without being noticed?
- Razorhat: Also, why did the rebels allow luke to pilot a plane so quickly? Yeah I know Leia brought him, but would they really trust someone to pilot one that quickly?
- Razorhat: How does luke even know how to pilot one? I know he has experience with ships, but with the exact model the rebellion uses for raiding trips?
- Razorhat: Kinda weird
- Razorhat: Anyhow, these are small faults
- Razorhat: So in overall, it wasn't bad. Good even
- Razorhat: Not great though
- EnderEagle9: It's really interesting to see someone looking at Star Wars without the rose-tinted glasses of having grown up watching it.
- Razorhat: As an aside, did anyone get southern slave owner vibes from Luke's uncle and aunt? The way they bought robots from some desert hobos (don't know the name for those red-robed creatures), attached a chip to them so they couldn't flee (a collar) and forced them to work on a farm, with the robots addressing luke as their master
- Razorhat: Like, that was really weird
- EnderEagle9: The robed creatures are Jawas.
- SpankyWorks: They didn't shoot the pod because they thought the plans were on it
- SpankyWorks: Because there was no life
- EnderEagle9: And I'd never thought of it like that.
- SpankyWorks: That's why they went to the surface and killed Luke's family
- Razorhat: But they didn't need the plans. They have the plans, they don't want the enemy to have them(edited)
- SpankyWorks: I didn't say it made sense
- Razorhat: Also, they never said the plans were on that pod. The officers just went "Should we shoot that pod?" "Nah, there's no life on it"
- Razorhat: Darth Vader said the plans were most likely on it after he was informed of the pod, but by then it was already on the planet
- SpankyWorks: I was just saying the officially recognized "reason", not really defending the writing
- SpankyWorks: Also the entire Death Star scene was "staged" I guess?
- SpankyWorks: Vader knew obi wan was on the ship when they brought it in
- SpankyWorks: And the pilot thing is never really explained well, but yeah he has experience flying ships that operate the same way
- SpankyWorks: Really it's only explained through crappy context clues
- Razorhat: He knew, so he gave the order to let the ship in and search it, but the normal officers didn't
- Razorhat: apparently the death star personnel is just incompetent(edited)
- SpankyWorks: Storm troopers in general are
- SpankyWorks: The theory is that the troopers might've known
- SpankyWorks: So that's why they "missed"
- SpankyWorks: Emperor and Vader want to recruit the skywalkers
- SpankyWorks: But that's speculation and never implied directly
- Razorhat: On that note, I got a great lol when obi wan said "Only imperial storm troopers are this precise", and then they missed every shot for the entirety of the film
- SpankyWorks: Hahaha yep
- SpankyWorks: That's part of why people think they missed on purpose
- SpankyWorks: But in reality it was just how Lucas wrote the script
- SpankyWorks: When you have scenes like that that last for a long time and multiple of them in the film it makes their precision seem really bad
- SpankyWorks: "They get shot at but not hit"
- SpankyWorks: Empire is my favorite
