  1. >Ship wrecks at sea during storm
  2. >Thanks to life vest manage to swim to a small nearby island
  3. >Nobody else makes it
  4. >Black out on the beach from exhaustion
  5. >Wake up to find wreckage washed up all around you
  6. >Amazingly, a large crate washed ashore intact
  7. >You open it
  8. >Full of a dozen fluffy ponies
  9. >They're dizzy and seasick, having thrown up all over the place, but alive
  10. >They mutter a few disoriented "Pway?"s
  11. >The only shelter on the island is a rocky cave, which goes down a ways to a shallow spring of fresh water
  12. >The only vegetation is grass, unfit for human consumption
  13. >The fluffy ponies like it just fine
  14. >Sit tight and wait for rescue, with fluffy ponies for company
  15. >They enjoy the island, running and playing, grazing and drinking from the spring
  16. >As days drag on you grow hungry
  17. >Fluffy ponies notice, ask "Why you get smawwer?"
  18. >Finally begin fearing starvation
  19. >In the night, while they sleep, grab a fluffy pony by the neck
  20. >Cover its mouth so it can't scream
  21. >Its little legs run uselessly in the air
  22. >Snap its neck
  23. >Ball of fluff goes limp
  24. >Take it outside
  25. >Make small fire with dry brush and your lighter
  26. >Manage to get enough meat off the fluffy pony to stave off your hunger
  27. >The next day the fluffy ponies wonder "Where fwend go?"
  28. >They think it's hide and seek
  29. >You watch them run all over the island looking for her
  30. >You wonder how long it will take for rescue to come
  31. >Days drag on
  32. >Hunger burns you up inside
  33. >Finally decide to take another pony
  34. >This one actually bites you
  35. >You're so shocked you almost drop it, but keep your hand over its mouth
  36. >You snap its neck before daring to look it in the eye
  37. >You eat this one in the same manner as the last
  38. >The next day the fluffy ponies search the island, a little more worried this time
  39. >One of them approaches you
  40. >"Wan' game ovah" she says, looking sad "Wan' fwends back"
  41. >You can only shrug
  42. >One of the others starts screaming
  43. >You run over to the beach
  44. >The fluffy ponies are crowded around a tangle of driftwood
  45. >The bloodied fluff of last night's victim has washed ashore
  46. >The fluffy ponies are babbling fearfully and confused
  47. >You try to reassure them that they'll be okay, and that rescue will come
  48. >That night they sleep in a pile on top of you, shaking fearfully
  49. >You decide you can go another day without food
  50. >Still no sign of rescue
  51. >Afraid if you leave it off any longer you'll be too weak to go through with it
  52. >That night grab another off the pile
  53. >In doing so you accidentally knock the others
  54. >One wakes and sees you choking the life out of one of the fluffy ponies
  55. >She screams and screams
  56. >The rest wake
  57. >They start screaming, crying, and soiling themselves
  58. >They don't think to run
  59. >You flee the cave
  60. >You cook and eat your latest victim, the distant screams never letting up
  61. >You wait for hours after finishing, waiting for the screaming to stop before you confront them
  62. >You sleep on the sand that night
  63. >The next day you go to see the fluffy ponies, or at least get water from the cave
  64. >They try to scream and scamper away when they see you, but they just end up sloshing around the cave spring
  65. >Their voices are too hoarse to scream any more
  66. >You explain you're starving, that you can't eat grass, that you needed the meat to live
  67. >They don't understand
  68. >"Why eat fwuffy?" one asks, weeping openly "Why hurt fwuffy?"
  69. >You try to explain again that you'll die without food
  70. >"Eat gwass" says another "Fwuffy eats gwass when tummy hurt"
  71. >You say humans can't live off of grass
  72. >They can't grasp the situation, but too exhausted to carry on
  73. >They file out of the cave to graze
  74. >You wash the blood off and drink from the spring
  75. >There are a few half-hearted screams from outside
  76. >Remember you didn't dispose of the remains this time
  77. >Days stretch onward
  78. >The fluffy ponies endure you in mute silence
  79. >When they're grazing and you're in the cave, at times they seem to forget about you as you hear them babbling about playing and the sun and the taste of grass
  80. >Whenever you appear it goes silent
  81. >At night they try to hide
  82. >Pitifully, there's just nowhere to go on the island
  83. >A few even hide in the cave
  84. >One seems to have forgotten everything, sleeps right on your chest
  85. >Hunger is burning again
  86. >Arms growing wirey and weak
  87. >Decide to take one of the ponies sleeping on the grass
  88. >The others wake when you do it
  89. >You can see their eyes in the shadows surrounding your camp fire, watching you as you cook and eat your latest victim
  90. >They make no move, say nothing
  91. >The next day is as before
  92. >This becomes your new reality
  93. >Every few days, when you're too weak to carry on, you take another fluffy pony in the night
  94. >They always struggle when they're taken, but the rest just watch
  95. >You take to staying in the cave at all hours
  96. >Their numers dwindle
  97. >They all sleep outside of the cave now
  98. >All except the stupid one
  99. >It sleeps on your chest
  100. >You have no idea if it even understands what you do
  101. >You hunt the others instead
  102. >When their number sinks to fewer than half, the remainder become slightly better at hiding - some nights you can't even account for all of them
  103. >One night you wake to see the ponies gathering at the mouth of your cave
  104. >You move the sleeping one on your chest on to the floor
  105. >One appears to be leading them
  106. >It has a face of rare determination you have never seen on the simple creatures before
  107. >"We wan' you go 'way," it says, firmly.
  108. >You stare
  109. >"We's no afwaid of you no more!"
  110. >You search for words
  111. >You can no longer remember them
  112. >You feel instead an animal rage build within you
  113. >A growling roar rolls out of your mouth
  114. >The ponies scatter
  115. >You chase the ringleader, feeling your hunger acutely now
  116. >She flees, terrified, straight into the ocean
  117. >You wade in up to your waist but stop, your strength spent
  118. >She keeps going, her tiny limbs pumping furiously, propelling her whole soggy mess of a body further forward
  119. >The weight of her wet fluff catches up to her
  120. >She disappears under the waves
  121. >You find one of the others, quivering behind the cave
  122. >It cries as you take it to the fire pit
  123. >When you're done you return to sleep
  124. >Your favourite never even woke up
  125. >Days become weeks
  126. >While the sun is up you squat in darkness, watching from the cave mouth
  127. >The remaining ponies only enter once a day, in a huddled group, drinking from the water spring and then hurrying out again
  128. >You loom over them the whole time
  129. >Your favourite is the only one who goes back and forth comfortably
  130. >While it's outside you can hear the others 'whispering' furiously to it, trying to explain their childlike understanding of the situation
  131. >It's totally oblivious
  132. >It keeps asking if you want "pway ball?"
  133. >You want to tell it you don't have a ball, but your tongue feels fat and dead in your mouth
  134. >You prowl the beach every night, watching the remaining ponies as they sleep, shivering, in the cold
  135. >When your hunger takes you you take one of them
  136. >When there remains only one besides your favourite, it stands at the mouth of your cave
  137. >It looks past you toward the water spring
  138. >It scurries off
  139. >This carries on for two more days
  140. >On the third day your hunger is too great
  141. >You emerge from the cave, squinting against the sun you forgot
  142. >You find the last fluffy pony not far away, lying dead where it died of dehydration
  143. >Your favourite follows close behind, confused
  144. >"Wha happen?"
  145. >You don't reply
  146. >Your favourite seems to shrug it off, and goes to graze
  147. >There is nothing left to eat
  148. >Nothing but your favourite
  149. >You sit with her in the cave, watching her play in the shallow water
  150. >She keeps rolling over, soaking her fluff and making it flop around, which makes her laugh
  151. >You feel close to death
  152. >You need to feed while you still have the strength to do the deed
  153. >That night you look at her sleeping form
  154. >You wake her first
  155. >She looks at you with the same happy face as you saw on the first day, when you opened the crate and found the fluffy ponies inside
  156. >"Pway?"
  157. >You dig deep to find your voice
  158. >"No, not today," you croak
  159. >She frowns
  160. >Suddenly, bright light pierces night
  161. >Pours through cave entrance
  162. >You shade your eyes
  163. >It's a spotlight
  164. >Rescue has finally arrived!
  165. >You can hear a voice on a loudspeaker, calling your ship's name, calling for survivors
  166. >You look back to your fluffy pony
  167. >She's still confused
  168. >"Wha's that?"
  169. >You try to imagine what'll happen if anyone hears what you did
  170. >You imagine what she might say if you're rescued
  171. >"Nothing..." you manage "Everything's going to be okay"
  172. >Your weakened hands take fluffy pony by the throat
  173. >She's still looking at you with completely trusting eyes
  174. >You close yours
  175. >You thrust her head under the water of the spring
  176. >She gives a few ineffective kicks, more reflex than anything
  177. >A few more twitches and she goes still
  178. >Fluffy pony drowns
  179. >You drag yourself to the beach
  180. >A small craft is already pulling up, its spotlight trained on you
  181. >You can make out the dark outline of a larger ship out to sea
  182. >Men come running up
  183. >They pull you upright, shoulder your weight
  184. >You try to rasp out thanks, but are too weak
  185. >"It's okay mate, we've got you. Come along now."
  186. >You're taken to their ship and wrapped in a warm blanket
  187. >A medic on hand gets to work checking you for injuries
  188. >"Thank you, thank you all," you manage
  189. >The crew aren't looking at you
  190. >They're scanning the beach
  191. >"There's no one else," you offer. "I was the only survivor."
  192. >"We were told to look for a shipment of fluffy ponies," explains the craft's captain
  193. >"I never saw anything like that, their cargo unit was breached when it washed ashore."
  194. >The captain raises his eyebrows. "Really? That's strange. Contradicts the story we got from the other survivor."
  195. >You tense
  196. >"What other survivor?"
  197. >"A fluffy pony we found floating along about a week back. It's a damned thing getting nautical directions from a fluffy pony, I can tell you."
  198. >It couldn't be
  199. >It has to be
  200. >"What did... what did she say?"
  201. >"She?" said the captain, frowning. "She said there were a half-dozen fluffy ponies and a frightening monster trapped on an island near the wreck. You wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would you?"
  202. >Your throat goes dry
  203. >Your tongue goes dead
  204. >"Well, never mind," says the captain. "Once we get back to the ship we should be able to set things right, once and for all."
