- [12:27] <alexis> this is a story
- [12:28] <alexis> of three people.
- [12:28] <alexis> all female.
- [12:28] <alexis> all smart.
- [12:28] <alexis> Dot Sokol
- [12:28] <alexis> Maya Olenera O'Dell
- [12:28] <alexis> Spike Alexis Damon
- [12:28] <alexis> so
- [12:28] <alexis> it all started
- [12:28] <alexis> when Dot
- [12:28] <alexis> which is maya's cousin
- [12:29] <alexis> decided to make an IRC server in VB6 for a school project
- [12:29] <alexis> she didn't know too much about networking
- [12:29] <alexis> but was an IRC junkie
- [12:29] <alexis> enter maya.
- [12:29] <alexis> maya helped her out and coded a good portion of it
- [12:29] <alexis> half the time, posing as dot on IRC while testing it
- [12:29] <alexis> (coding ircd's requires lots and lots of testing .. which = chat)
- [12:29] <alexis> so anyway
- [12:30] <alexis> all is fine in the world
- [12:30] <alexis> except that maya didn't want to give dot's identity back to her
- [12:30] <alexis> she made friends with a bunch of people and would rather not confuse them.
- [12:30] <alexis> as a result dot basically then stole maya's identity
- [12:30] <alexis> (fun, eh?)
- [12:31] <alexis> dot basically trashed her reputation by making all kinds of ... sexual propisitions to people in high places.
- [12:31] <alexis> dandy.
- [12:31] <alexis> eventually they made up
- [12:31] <alexis> and maya made a new identity, since her real identity was trashed
- [12:31] <alexis> so she scrambled her name
- [12:31] <alexis> Maya Olenera O'Dell -> Olene Maya Q'Dell
- [12:31] <alexis> i don't know where the "Q" comes from.
- [12:32] <alexis> whatever.
- [12:32] <alexis> maya thought her own reputation as a respected coder was ruined
- [12:32] <alexis> but in fact
- [12:32] <alexis> by sexually propositioning people
- [12:32] <alexis> dot (who thought it would get maya banned from places)
- [12:32] <alexis> in reality
- [12:33] <alexis> wound up giving maya power
- [12:33] <alexis> male ircops were like
- [12:33] <alexis> "omg tits"
- [12:33] <alexis> "ill hit that"
- [12:33] <alexis> "heres an o-line"
- [12:33] <alexis> so
- [12:33] <alexis> maya
- [12:33] <alexis> (as olene)
- [12:33] <alexis> kinda got into that kind of thing.
- [12:33] <alexis> cybering if you will.
- [12:33] <alexis> except
- [12:33] <alexis> most people cyber because they like the person, or it feels good
- [12:33] <alexis> olene cybered for power.
- [12:34] <alexis> olene would not talk to people unless they had something she wanted.
- [12:34] <alexis> olene knew all the efnet admins.
- [12:34] <alexis> she knew all the network owners
- [12:34] <alexis> she knew people with access to crazy shit.
- [12:34] <alexis> when sex didn't work
- [12:34] <alexis> olene used guilt
- [12:34] <alexis> fear
- [12:34] <alexis> panic
- [12:34] <alexis> whatever
- [12:34] <alexis> she portrayed herself as some lonely desperate girl
- [12:35] <alexis> and if she didn't get what she wanted, she'd threaten suicide usually
- [12:35] <alexis> most people cave in when they think about someone's death being their fault.
- [12:35] <alexis> anyway
- [12:35] <alexis> olene got increasingly interested in IRC
- [12:35] <alexis> at the same time, I knew olene through her other cousin
- [12:35] <alexis> which was my former best friend
- [12:36] <alexis> apparently we discovered that each other IRC'd
- [12:36] <alexis> and became friends
- [12:36] <alexis> she showed me what she had done with dot's ircd
- [12:36] <alexis> it was cool, but .. uh.. kinda.. amateur.
- [12:36] <alexis> so
- [12:36] <alexis> i taught maya managed code
- [12:36] <alexis> i taught her object orientation
- [12:36] <alexis> VB.NET, C#
- [12:36] <alexis> we developed an ircd together
- [12:37] <alexis> first called 'asteriskircd', then 'roflircd'.
- [12:37] <alexis> when we found out that asterisk was the name of a PBX
- [12:37] <alexis> it worked great
- [12:37] <alexis> but it was only 99% finished when olene left.
- [12:37] <alexis> olene was basically known too well for drama
- [12:38] <alexis> drama is the side effect of fucking people for power.
- [12:38] <alexis> everyone else that sees it happen is like "WTF?!?!"
- [12:38] <alexis> so
- [12:38] <alexis> eventually olene was stripped of power on efnet
- [12:38] <alexis> and retreated to a tiny lil land called espernet.
- [12:38] <alexis> we were working on roflircd at the time
- [12:38] <alexis> when out of nowhere
- [12:38] <alexis> she decided
- [12:38] <alexis> she was done.
- [12:39] <alexis> she pretty much destroyed the 'olene' identity
- [12:39] <alexis> it was synonymous with drama, manipulation, and the like
- [12:39] <alexis> she ran out of friends
- [12:39] <alexis> she ran out of motivation to code
- [12:39] <alexis> and she didn't want to see the letters I R and C in that order ever again.
- [12:39] <alexis> :/
- [12:39] <alexis> she was a really nice person.
- [12:40] <alexis> she just happened to figure out that sex = power
- [12:40] <alexis> and used it to her advantage.
- [12:40] <alexis> its not like she was trying to make money or anything.
- [12:40] <alexis> she just wanted friends.
- [12:40] <alexis> she wanted to run a decent network.
- [12:40] <alexis> yeah.
- [12:40] <alexis> thats the thing about her
- [12:40] <alexis> she always had to be at the top.
- [12:40] <alexis> she couldn't stand being bossed around by people higher up than her.
- [12:40] <alexis> anyway
- [12:40] <alexis> she left
- [12:40] <alexis> she stopped coding
- [12:40] <alexis> stopped chatting
- [12:40] <alexis> just disappeared.
- [12:41] <alexis> at the time, we lived in the same city (almost)
- [12:41] <alexis> so i was always over there coding.
- [12:41] <alexis> she would always be signed onto AIM
- [12:41] <alexis> and i would see people IM her
- [12:41] <alexis> a biproduct of her methods
- [12:41] <alexis> unfortunately
- [12:41] <alexis> are that a lot of people fell in love with her
- [12:41] <alexis> she led on a lot of people
- [12:41] <alexis> and i felt really bad for them
- [12:42] <alexis> they would hopelessly IM her over and over waiting for a response.
- [12:42] <alexis> so.. i took over.
- [12:42] <alexis> anyone that IMed me, i would review the logs she had to see what she had done to them
- [12:42] <alexis> and then pretty much tried to fix it
- [12:42] <alexis> unfortunately a few people were heartbroken
- [12:42] <alexis> but whatever.
- [12:43] <alexis> i wrote up a huge letter addressed to the people on espernet
- [12:43] <alexis> about how sorry "I" was
- [12:43] <alexis> for any drama i caused.
- [12:43] <alexis> this that and the other thing
- [12:43] <alexis> blah blah
- [12:43] <alexis> so.. people eventually forgave "olene">
- [12:43] <alexis> i used the nickname for about 10 months.
- [12:44] <alexis> this would be probably 2005
- [12:44] <alexis> it was after "olene" was off the face of efnet.
- [12:45] <alexis> the only place i chatted with her name was espernet, the network we used to test the ircd (o-net), and AIM.
- [12:45] <alexis> the real olene
- [12:45] <alexis> maya
- [12:45] <alexis> eventually stepped outside her house
- [12:45] <alexis> for once in her life
- [12:45] <alexis> met a guy
- [12:45] <alexis> got laid
- [12:45] <alexis> and is living happily ever after with him
- [12:46] <alexis> anyway
- [12:46] <alexis> when this happened, i pretty much just stopped using 'olene'.
- [12:46] <alexis> because by this time, 'olene' was a bad word.
- [12:46] <alexis> a google search pretty much brings up all these horrible logs
- [12:47] <alexis> i had just been banned from espernet because i bitched at some guy
- [12:47] <alexis> so whatever
- [12:47] <alexis> i took a short break from IRC
- [12:47] <alexis> and started (heh) video games
- [12:47] <alexis> mainly.. DOOM.
- [12:47] <alexis> or rather, the zdoom port called Skulltag
- [12:47] <alexis> unfortunately you really can't get away from IRC.
- [12:48] <alexis> so even after a few months of being a mapper and deathmatch player
- [12:48] <alexis> i wound back on IRC on OFTC.net in #zdoom
- [12:48] <alexis> this time
- [12:48] <alexis> as myself.
- [12:48] <alexis> i hadn't IRCed as myself since before i met maya.
- [12:48] <alexis> so.. clean slate.
- [12:48] <alexis> after getting bored with DOOM
- [12:48] <alexis> which is surprisingly easy.
- [12:49] <alexis> i made a slightly poor choice.
- [12:49] <alexis> and decided to go back to #lemonade (the channel from espernet)
- [12:49] <alexis> only, it had since been moved to xelium.net
- [12:49] <alexis> this was really bad.
- [12:49] <alexis> almost everyone immediately figured out who i was.
- [12:49] <alexis> despite long arguments
- [12:49] <alexis> and proof to the contrary
- [12:50] <alexis> i shouldn't have gone there
- [12:50] <alexis> because i brought the 'olene' drama to my real identity
- [12:50] <alexis> so, it wasn't long before i left there
- [12:50] <alexis> went to dalnet.
- [12:50] <alexis> been there for the last year.
- [12:50] <alexis> ive always been attracted to the sonic beta community
- [12:50] <alexis> because when i was little
- [12:51] <alexis> i played a sonic beta
- [12:51] <alexis> cart
- [12:51] <alexis> from a flea market
- [12:51] <alexis> so i used to lurk on the old area51 forums.
- [12:51] <alexis> anyway
- [12:51] <alexis> this led to me being involved in s2beta
- [12:51] <alexis> in the last year
- [12:51] <alexis> i coded my own ircd from scratch
- [12:51] <alexis> 'scarlet'.
- [12:51] <alexis> it climaxed with it being used officially by s2beta
- [12:51] <alexis> it integrated IRC with the forums
- [12:52] <alexis> so new topics would notify irc users, etc
- [12:52] <alexis> thats why i have SQL access.
- [12:52] <Abwayax> and that's how you got my password hash?
- [12:52] <alexis> yessir.
- [12:52] <alexis> for some reason
- [12:52] <alexis> i believe the best part of making friends with someone
- [12:52] <alexis> is.. making friends.
- [12:52] <alexis> once i know a person
- [12:52] <alexis> it's rare that i talk to them a lot
- [12:53] <alexis> i usually
- [12:53] <alexis> and i dont know why
- [12:53] <alexis> wind up
- [12:53] <alexis> making friends
- [12:53] <alexis> never talking to them again
- [12:53] <alexis> and just making more.
- [12:53] <alexis> so i like to harvest screennames.
- [12:53] <alexis> whether i get them from googling, memberlists of forums, SQL scrubbing
- [12:53] <alexis> i love IMing people
- [12:53] <alexis> and they're like "who are you?"
- [12:53] <alexis> and im like
- [12:53] <alexis> "some random girl that's here just to make you happy!"
- [12:54] <alexis> most people seem turned off and disturbed
- [12:54] <alexis> i dont know why.
- [12:54] <alexis> everyone, including me, seemes to have an uncanny requirement of knowing how someone got your screenname.
- [12:54] <alexis> i find it hilarious.
- [12:54] <alexis> i give really stupid answers.
- [12:54] <alexis> occasionally i tell them the truth.
- [12:54] <alexis> i'm a touchy feely person.
