  1. [12:27] <alexis> this is a story
  2. [12:28] <alexis> of three people.
  3. [12:28] <alexis> all female.
  4. [12:28] <alexis> all smart.
  5. [12:28] <alexis> Dot Sokol
  6. [12:28] <alexis> Maya Olenera O'Dell
  7. [12:28] <alexis> Spike Alexis Damon
  8. [12:28] <alexis> so
  9. [12:28] <alexis> it all started
  10. [12:28] <alexis> when Dot
  11. [12:28] <alexis> which is maya's cousin
  12. [12:29] <alexis> decided to make an IRC server in VB6 for a school project
  13. [12:29] <alexis> she didn't know too much about networking
  14. [12:29] <alexis> but was an IRC junkie
  15. [12:29] <alexis> enter maya.
  16. [12:29] <alexis> maya helped her out and coded a good portion of it
  17. [12:29] <alexis> half the time, posing as dot on IRC while testing it
  18. [12:29] <alexis> (coding ircd's requires lots and lots of testing .. which = chat)
  19. [12:29] <alexis> so anyway
  20. [12:30] <alexis> all is fine in the world
  21. [12:30] <alexis> except that maya didn't want to give dot's identity back to her
  22. [12:30] <alexis> she made friends with a bunch of people and would rather not confuse them.
  23. [12:30] <alexis> as a result dot basically then stole maya's identity
  24. [12:30] <alexis> (fun, eh?)
  25. [12:31] <alexis> dot basically trashed her reputation by making all kinds of ... sexual propisitions to people in high places.
  26. [12:31] <alexis> dandy.
  27. [12:31] <alexis> eventually they made up
  28. [12:31] <alexis> and maya made a new identity, since her real identity was trashed
  29. [12:31] <alexis> so she scrambled her name
  30. [12:31] <alexis> Maya Olenera O'Dell -> Olene Maya Q'Dell
  31. [12:31] <alexis> i don't know where the "Q" comes from.
  32. [12:32] <alexis> whatever.
  33. [12:32] <alexis> maya thought her own reputation as a respected coder was ruined
  34. [12:32] <alexis> but in fact
  35. [12:32] <alexis> by sexually propositioning people
  36. [12:32] <alexis> dot (who thought it would get maya banned from places)
  37. [12:32] <alexis> in reality
  38. [12:33] <alexis> wound up giving maya power
  39. [12:33] <alexis> male ircops were like
  40. [12:33] <alexis> "omg tits"
  41. [12:33] <alexis> "ill hit that"
  42. [12:33] <alexis> "heres an o-line"
  43. [12:33] <alexis> so
  44. [12:33] <alexis> maya
  45. [12:33] <alexis> (as olene)
  46. [12:33] <alexis> kinda got into that kind of thing.
  47. [12:33] <alexis> cybering if you will.
  48. [12:33] <alexis> except
  49. [12:33] <alexis> most people cyber because they like the person, or it feels good
  50. [12:33] <alexis> olene cybered for power.
  51. [12:34] <alexis> olene would not talk to people unless they had something she wanted.
  52. [12:34] <alexis> olene knew all the efnet admins.
  53. [12:34] <alexis> she knew all the network owners
  54. [12:34] <alexis> she knew people with access to crazy shit.
  55. [12:34] <alexis> when sex didn't work
  56. [12:34] <alexis> olene used guilt
  57. [12:34] <alexis> fear
  58. [12:34] <alexis> panic
  59. [12:34] <alexis> whatever
  60. [12:34] <alexis> she portrayed herself as some lonely desperate girl
  61. [12:35] <alexis> and if she didn't get what she wanted, she'd threaten suicide usually
  62. [12:35] <alexis> most people cave in when they think about someone's death being their fault.
  63. [12:35] <alexis> anyway
  64. [12:35] <alexis> olene got increasingly interested in IRC
  65. [12:35] <alexis> at the same time, I knew olene through her other cousin
  66. [12:35] <alexis> which was my former best friend
  67. [12:36] <alexis> apparently we discovered that each other IRC'd
  68. [12:36] <alexis> and became friends
  69. [12:36] <alexis> she showed me what she had done with dot's ircd
  70. [12:36] <alexis> it was cool, but .. uh.. kinda.. amateur.
  71. [12:36] <alexis> so
  72. [12:36] <alexis> i taught maya managed code
  73. [12:36] <alexis> i taught her object orientation
  74. [12:36] <alexis> VB.NET, C#
  75. [12:36] <alexis> we developed an ircd together
  76. [12:37] <alexis> first called 'asteriskircd', then 'roflircd'.
  77. [12:37] <alexis> when we found out that asterisk was the name of a PBX
  78. [12:37] <alexis> it worked great
  79. [12:37] <alexis> but it was only 99% finished when olene left.
  80. [12:37] <alexis> olene was basically known too well for drama
  81. [12:38] <alexis> drama is the side effect of fucking people for power.
  82. [12:38] <alexis> everyone else that sees it happen is like "WTF?!?!"
  83. [12:38] <alexis> so
  84. [12:38] <alexis> eventually olene was stripped of power on efnet
  85. [12:38] <alexis> and retreated to a tiny lil land called espernet.
  86. [12:38] <alexis> we were working on roflircd at the time
  87. [12:38] <alexis> when out of nowhere
  88. [12:38] <alexis> she decided
  89. [12:38] <alexis> she was done.
  90. [12:39] <alexis> she pretty much destroyed the 'olene' identity
  91. [12:39] <alexis> it was synonymous with drama, manipulation, and the like
  92. [12:39] <alexis> she ran out of friends
  93. [12:39] <alexis> she ran out of motivation to code
  94. [12:39] <alexis> and she didn't want to see the letters I R and C in that order ever again.
  95. [12:39] <alexis> :/
  96. [12:39] <alexis> she was a really nice person.
  97. [12:40] <alexis> she just happened to figure out that sex = power
  98. [12:40] <alexis> and used it to her advantage.
  99. [12:40] <alexis> its not like she was trying to make money or anything.
  100. [12:40] <alexis> she just wanted friends.
  101. [12:40] <alexis> she wanted to run a decent network.
  102. [12:40] <alexis> yeah.
  103. [12:40] <alexis> thats the thing about her
  104. [12:40] <alexis> she always had to be at the top.
  105. [12:40] <alexis> she couldn't stand being bossed around by people higher up than her.
  106. [12:40] <alexis> anyway
  107. [12:40] <alexis> she left
  108. [12:40] <alexis> she stopped coding
  109. [12:40] <alexis> stopped chatting
  110. [12:40] <alexis> just disappeared.
  111. [12:41] <alexis> at the time, we lived in the same city (almost)
  112. [12:41] <alexis> so i was always over there coding.
  113. [12:41] <alexis> she would always be signed onto AIM
  114. [12:41] <alexis> and i would see people IM her
  115. [12:41] <alexis> a biproduct of her methods
  116. [12:41] <alexis> unfortunately
  117. [12:41] <alexis> are that a lot of people fell in love with her
  118. [12:41] <alexis> she led on a lot of people
  119. [12:41] <alexis> and i felt really bad for them
  120. [12:42] <alexis> they would hopelessly IM her over and over waiting for a response.
  121. [12:42] <alexis> so.. i took over.
  122. [12:42] <alexis> anyone that IMed me, i would review the logs she had to see what she had done to them
  123. [12:42] <alexis> and then pretty much tried to fix it
  124. [12:42] <alexis> unfortunately a few people were heartbroken
  125. [12:42] <alexis> but whatever.
  126. [12:43] <alexis> i wrote up a huge letter addressed to the people on espernet
  127. [12:43] <alexis> about how sorry "I" was
  128. [12:43] <alexis> for any drama i caused.
  129. [12:43] <alexis> this that and the other thing
  130. [12:43] <alexis> blah blah
  131. [12:43] <alexis> so.. people eventually forgave "olene">
  132. [12:43] <alexis> i used the nickname for about 10 months.
  133. [12:44] <alexis> this would be probably 2005
  134. [12:44] <alexis> it was after "olene" was off the face of efnet.
  135. [12:45] <alexis> the only place i chatted with her name was espernet, the network we used to test the ircd (o-net), and AIM.
  136. [12:45] <alexis> the real olene
  137. [12:45] <alexis> maya
  138. [12:45] <alexis> eventually stepped outside her house
  139. [12:45] <alexis> for once in her life
  140. [12:45] <alexis> met a guy
  141. [12:45] <alexis> got laid
  142. [12:45] <alexis> and is living happily ever after with him
  143. [12:46] <alexis> anyway
  144. [12:46] <alexis> when this happened, i pretty much just stopped using 'olene'.
  145. [12:46] <alexis> because by this time, 'olene' was a bad word.
  146. [12:46] <alexis> a google search pretty much brings up all these horrible logs
  147. [12:47] <alexis> i had just been banned from espernet because i bitched at some guy
  148. [12:47] <alexis> so whatever
  149. [12:47] <alexis> i took a short break from IRC
  150. [12:47] <alexis> and started (heh) video games
  151. [12:47] <alexis> mainly.. DOOM.
  152. [12:47] <alexis> or rather, the zdoom port called Skulltag
  153. [12:47] <alexis> unfortunately you really can't get away from IRC.
  154. [12:48] <alexis> so even after a few months of being a mapper and deathmatch player
  155. [12:48] <alexis> i wound back on IRC on OFTC.net in #zdoom
  156. [12:48] <alexis> this time
  157. [12:48] <alexis> as myself.
  158. [12:48] <alexis> i hadn't IRCed as myself since before i met maya.
  159. [12:48] <alexis> so.. clean slate.
  160. [12:48] <alexis> after getting bored with DOOM
  161. [12:48] <alexis> which is surprisingly easy.
  162. [12:49] <alexis> i made a slightly poor choice.
  163. [12:49] <alexis> and decided to go back to #lemonade (the channel from espernet)
  164. [12:49] <alexis> only, it had since been moved to xelium.net
  165. [12:49] <alexis> this was really bad.
  166. [12:49] <alexis> almost everyone immediately figured out who i was.
  167. [12:49] <alexis> despite long arguments
  168. [12:49] <alexis> and proof to the contrary
  169. [12:50] <alexis> i shouldn't have gone there
  170. [12:50] <alexis> because i brought the 'olene' drama to my real identity
  171. [12:50] <alexis> so, it wasn't long before i left there
  172. [12:50] <alexis> went to dalnet.
  173. [12:50] <alexis> been there for the last year.
  174. [12:50] <alexis> ive always been attracted to the sonic beta community
  175. [12:50] <alexis> because when i was little
  176. [12:51] <alexis> i played a sonic beta
  177. [12:51] <alexis> cart
  178. [12:51] <alexis> from a flea market
  179. [12:51] <alexis> so i used to lurk on the old area51 forums.
  180. [12:51] <alexis> anyway
  181. [12:51] <alexis> this led to me being involved in s2beta
  182. [12:51] <alexis> in the last year
  183. [12:51] <alexis> i coded my own ircd from scratch
  184. [12:51] <alexis> 'scarlet'.
  185. [12:51] <alexis> it climaxed with it being used officially by s2beta
  186. [12:51] <alexis> it integrated IRC with the forums
  187. [12:52] <alexis> so new topics would notify irc users, etc
  188. [12:52] <alexis> thats why i have SQL access.
  189. [12:52] <Abwayax> and that's how you got my password hash?
  190. [12:52] <alexis> yessir.
  191. [12:52] <alexis> for some reason
  192. [12:52] <alexis> i believe the best part of making friends with someone
  193. [12:52] <alexis> is.. making friends.
  194. [12:52] <alexis> once i know a person
  195. [12:52] <alexis> it's rare that i talk to them a lot
  196. [12:53] <alexis> i usually
  197. [12:53] <alexis> and i dont know why
  198. [12:53] <alexis> wind up
  199. [12:53] <alexis> making friends
  200. [12:53] <alexis> never talking to them again
  201. [12:53] <alexis> and just making more.
  202. [12:53] <alexis> so i like to harvest screennames.
  203. [12:53] <alexis> whether i get them from googling, memberlists of forums, SQL scrubbing
  204. [12:53] <alexis> i love IMing people
  205. [12:53] <alexis> and they're like "who are you?"
  206. [12:53] <alexis> and im like
  207. [12:53] <alexis> "some random girl that's here just to make you happy!"
  208. [12:54] <alexis> most people seem turned off and disturbed
  209. [12:54] <alexis> i dont know why.
  210. [12:54] <alexis> everyone, including me, seemes to have an uncanny requirement of knowing how someone got your screenname.
  211. [12:54] <alexis> i find it hilarious.
  212. [12:54] <alexis> i give really stupid answers.
  213. [12:54] <alexis> occasionally i tell them the truth.
  214. [12:54] <alexis> i'm a touchy feely person.
