- NO SCHOOL MONDAY SEPTEMBER 5 (Labor Day)
- ---
- handout p. 78
- listing-order: when the time of each step or instruction isn’t important. you could choose to explain your ideas in a different order and it would still make sense. The reader could also choose not to do one of your ideas, and they can still accomplish the goal.
- time-order: when the time is important (you must do one step before another). if you change the order of your ideas, the paragraph doesn’t make sense
- p. 79
- Time order transitions:
- First, / First of all, / Second, / Third, / Next, / After that, / Then / Finally,
- Before a test, / In the morning, / During a flight,
- (Most of these are at the beginning of a sentence and need a comma. “Then” doesn’t need a comma.)
- You don’t need a comma if the time phrase comes at the end:
- Before a test, get enough sleep. = Get enough sleep before a test.
- Listing order transitions:
- First, / First of all, / Second, / Third, / In addition, / Also, / Another… / Finally,
- ---
- Note: “finally” introduces your last step or suggestion, it does NOT introduce the conclusion.
- Also note: you shouldn’t use a transition signal for every sentence. This can make a paragraph more confusing instead of more clear.
- “First, you’ll need to get all of the ingredients. You’ll need flour, eggs, …, and cheese. You can find these things in most grocery stores.”
