In 1944, an American General is shot down over a heavily defended German fortress and imprisoned within. A rescue attempt is at once launched by British Intellegence, since the General must be liberated before being made to reveal Allied plans for an invasion of France. As the mission unfolds, however, double and triple agents begin to appear in the ranks of the rescue team with the added mystery of an American Lieutenant assigned to the mission for reasons unknown.
During WW2 a British aircraft is shot down and crashes in Nazi held territory. The Germans capture the only survivor, an American General, and take him to the nearest SS headquarters. Unknown to the Germans the General has full knowledge of the D-Day operation. The British decide that the General must not be allowed to divulge any details of the Normandy landing at all cost and order Major John Smith to lead a crack commando team to rescue him. Amongst the team is an American Ranger, Lieutenant Schaffer, who is puzzled by his inclusion in an all British operation. When one of the team dies after the parachute drop, Schaffer suspects that Smith's mission has a much more secret objective.
I was a preteen when I first saw this movie many decades ago. This, along with High Plains Drifter were 2 movies that left an impression on me as a movie goer from a very early age. While Richard Burton is great, I think that Clint Eastwood's role is a deeper and very understated study as a confused yet loyal American soldier to the English in their mission. This is one of the most intriguing war moves ever made in my humble opinion. The scenery, the plot, the outcome, the twists and turns are what makes a 2 1/2 hour movie a treat to watch over and over again and the time just flies. Without giving anything away, just watch this movie once and you might be a fan for a long time. This movie is one for the ages and to cherish because it never gets old no matter how many times I watch it by myself or with family members.
Despite all the &#39;goofs&#39;, you can enjoy this movie if you just put them out of your head. One very convienent way of doing that is to never ever read IMDB and the amazing list of 106 goofs.<br/><br/>But there is one goof that they fail to list, that is glaring and absurd.<br/><br/>Burton and Eastwood and their men are in the snow, wearing all white, carrying white packs.<br/><br/>However, casual observation of said packs reveal them to be Vietnams-Era Alice Packs dyed or painted white.<br/><br/>This is just tooooooo much for me anymore. The sloppiness of this movie is of value only for the walk-thru by Clint.<br/><br/>But, thats Hollywood.

Presumably the trio of double agents killed them because they were suspicious of them and had seen or heard something that betrayed their treason. Yes, the Germans used a small number of early helicopters in late World War 2 for tasks such as transport and artillery spotting in addition to numerous experimental prototypes. Two Fa 223 Drache (&#39;Dragon&#39;) aircraft were actually assigned to the German Army&#39;s Mountain Warfare School at Innsbruck so the prescence of a helicopter in the film is surprisingly plausible.  a5c7b9f00b
