1. Heya fantabulous peeps, 32OrtonEdge32dh, your third favorite Discord moderator, checking in!!
2.
3. It's finally time for my debut as a fake reporter by presenting to you all the first ever interview in my own interview series!!! This took place in early December 2020.
4.
5.
6.
Let’s begin with the most burning question the community has. Where is the programming up to now in terms of progress on the game?
7. Out of seventy-five initially planned milestones, four are completed.
8.
9. Can you give me an example of a milestone? What was your first one?
10. Oh, god. [He pulls up a virtual document.] Winter theme was our first one.
11.
12. And when did programming start?
13. If by programming you mean actually writing the code, then it hasn't. If you mean initial design meetings, next January. If you mean previous code documentation, never.
14.
15. Our next question is: how did you handle coding over aspects from classic Everybody Edits to this new version?
16. From scratch. Everything is from scratch.
17.
18. So, when you say everything is from scratch, does that include our engine?
19. Yes. When I say everything, I mean everything.
20.
21. Alright, alright, let’s see... [Giggle] is the game better optimised than its Flash days?
22. You'd think, but no. That wasn't one of our main initial goals when starting work.
23.
24. Are there any exciting features players should look forward to?
25. I don’t know which is most exciting.
26.
27. Well, which excites you personally?
28. For me? Being a hands-on moderator behind the scenes is the most exciting.
29.
30. So, you’re more excited for the community aspects?
31. Yeah, the community aspects excite me the most. I really want to know how many bans it’ll take to fill our server capacity to 60%.
32.
33. So just how scalable are the servers?
34. Well, truth be told, we have one in place. We haven't had a server load high enough to warrant scaling.
35.
36. Alright, here’s some questions from our community members. Let’s see… Let’s start with this one: what’s your favorite small feature or quality of life change that you’ve done for the game?
37. The shop. I can’t stand the previous one.
38.
39. Previous, as in, the UI?
40. No, I mean only having one currency.
41.
42. Aha. What do you think is the largest, and most impactful, change?
43. As I said before, the game is a complete rewrite. So, there is not a single change, nothing is written yet. I cannot pinpoint a single important change.
44.
45. Oh, this one I saw coming. What language will the bot API be available in?
46. Bot API?
47.
48. Someone asked this. Why did you choose C++ over Rust? Is it because you don’t know Rust?
49. I don't know Rust, and I'm not sure if the other programmers do. I chose C++ because unlike Rust, I know enough to yell at the programmers about it, and if I’m not satisfied with their performance, I can quickly come up with new staff that’s enough to further stagnate this project.
50.
51. Are physics simulated server-side?
52. Physics?
53.
54. Last question from the community members. How does the game scale to large world sizes, and how did you manage it?
55. Think about it this way: there's only up to a certain world size. There's one server. Obviously, any size world you throw at it won't make it choke with no players. So, it’s really up to the community to keep the fewest possible people playing.
56.
57. So based on your answer, can a world be bigger than 200 by 200?
58. No.
59.
60. How would the game handle the biggest world that was available in Flash, the 600x400 one?
61. It wouldn't. We can handle it, it just wouldn't get filled. That won't be supported initially.
62.
63. So the world sizes are more compact than Flash.
64. That’s right. With no blocks and no players, there's practically no download!
65.
66. What feature are you proudest of?
67. Feature?
68.
69. Now even I’m excited for the technical aspects, and I don’t even get a thing about them. Let’s ask some stuff about you. What got you interested in coding?
70. [He is stuck in thought.] As an INTP, you tend to find yourself drawn to these very logical things..
71.
72. Why?
73. [Chuckles] Why? I'm a logician — It's in my nature.
74.
75. What is your proudest achievement so far?
76. It’s under NDA. [Laugh] I can’t. I really can’t.
77.
78. Something that’s not under NDA? My reputation as a faux reporter is at stake here!
79. [He is in thought again for a minute.] Nothing. I would have to pay myself a lot of money.
80.
81. Everything is under NDA?
82. All of it, yes. [He smiles and points to his wallet.]
83.
84. Okay, I lied. One more Everybody Edits Universe related question. Cumulatively, how many hours did you and the other programmers put in?
85. From me, a few. From them, a few dozen.
86.
87. So much for doing anything these last four months. Anyways, thank you for your time! Glad we got to do this interview.
88. Any time. Just not too often.
89.
90. This interview is mostly for those technical people among you!! As for the rest, like me, here's a little outline of future plans:
91.
92. -> ...
93. -> ...
94. -> ...
95.
96. Kthxbye!!!
