  1. Three walked solemnly down the winding, meaningless paths that latticed the Castle's exterior. Purposeless machinery and circuits inside the walls and floors buzzed and hummed with activity, some powering the massive computer complex, some simply doing nothing at all. Far away from the castle, above the empty city, a dark storm raged. He was alone. He was often alone.
  2. Part of his walks reminded him of his old duties, which he kept to himself. He was often kept in the Castle, and the few missions he was assigned were either meant to create potentially powerful Nobodies, or, as was more often the case, harvest the hearts from those who couldn’t be perfectly turned. Now that the Thirteenth had been located, he suspected that his duties would diminish into nothing.
  3. So, he walked, guarding the Castle from no intruder, no danger. Much like in his old life, being on the winning side had it’s own negative aspects.
  4. He patrolled until he came to another member, sitting on the floor of a pathway crossing above. He pretended not to see them.
  5. “Hey-o, pal. How’s it hanging?” They waved, down at Three, ignoring that he was being ignored. Of course, Three recognized the voice, and knew that if Two wanted to talk to him, then Two would talk to him.
  6. Of course, by the time Three had walked past them, he felt Two’s presence, heard his boots hit against the walkways. He put a hand on Three’s shoulder, leaning around him and waving again.
  7. “Aw, c’mon. What’s got you down, bud?”
  8. Three gently moved the sycophant’s hand from his shoulder. “I was having a pleasant stroll by my lonesome. I don’t need any company tonight.”
  9. “Well, that sure ain’t a way to treat your superior, is it?”
  10. “Superior?” Three shook his head, walking further from the annoyance. “I figured we were all under Seven’s commands by now. You’ve noticed that our ranks don’t mean much, yes?”
  11. “Not talking about him. Got something from the head honcho themselves. Numbero Uno. C’mon, let’s walk and talk!”
  12. Three rolled his eyes, letting them catch up.
  13. “So, we got a lot of things going for us. Got our thirteenth all lined up, plus a backup, got a steady influx of hearts – oh, speaking of!” Two gestured proudly at the incomplete Kingdom Hearts in the sky, now coming into view from the dark storms.
  14. “Yes, all of our problems are solved. I’m assuming we’ll spend the rest of our days twiddling our thumbs, then.”
  15. “Well, lemme…pitch something to you. You know how our Organization is. Just a real ragtag crew we’ve got, huh? The most powerful folks around and we don’t really…cooperate. Talk. Heck, we can’t get in the same room together without snapping at each other.”
  16. “Make your point. If I had a heart, I’d already be dead of boredom.”
  17. “Well, let’s say that…One’s starting to get the clue that a couple’a people want a slice of that big, heart-shaped pie in the sky. Some might be willing to do some…really not-nice things about it. Don’t you ever wonder where Eleven and Twelve dip off into in the city? Nightlife’s not really a thing down there.”
  18. Three turned away, looking down at the neon-lit skyline. “Their lives don’t concern me. If they were to mutiny, they’d be dispatched of quick enough, anyway.”
  19. Two chuckled, pulling himself back into Three’s path. “Well, that’s where you come in- you big, lance-thrusting husk, you. One wants you to keep an eye on all the little clubs that’ve been forming, making sure they don’t stop walking out of place. And, if they do – well, whatever happens happens, right?”
  20. Three winced, realizing all too quick what One meant for him to do – and that there was no disagreeing. “Wouldn’t Eight be a better choice for all of this? Or Six? Would any of these…clubs even humor me with their intentions?”
  21. “Hey, between you and me, we really don’t want to give some wildcard like Eight this kinda ‘get-out-of-jail-free’ stuff. And Six? Think a light breeze could eviscerate him.
  22. Three continued walking down the path.
  23. “Hey, believe me, we’ve been thinking about this for a while. Nine’s too lazy, Ten would probably flip a coin and act all cool about it. You’re the last person anyone would expect to have this sort of power. That’s what makes it so perfect!”
  24. Three continued to avoid looking at Two, but he couldn’t escape the reality. This would be his power from now on. This would be his duty.
  25. “I’m assuming I don’t have a say in this.”
  26. “Well, you c-“
  27. Three put his hand up, stopping Two in his tracks. “If I don’t, then there’s nothing more to be said.”
  28. He continued on his patrol, alone.
  29. He felt weighed down, for some, impossible reason.
