  1. Now listen close, I bring the news
  2.
  3. Of monsters that been slayed
  4.
  5. The story that I'm telling you's
  6.
  7. the Song of West Kincaid.
  8.
  9. The morning of his thirteenth year
  10. A Giant came to town
  11. "I'll eat you all and chew your bones
  12. I'll even steal your cows."
  13.
  14. Young West Kincaid, now shook with fear
  15. Ran to his father's side
  16. The old man stuck abed with illness
  17. spoke with father's pride
  18.
  19. "I'm much too old, too frail, too weak
  20. to stand up here and fight
  21. Here, take my blade, my blessing
  22. and fear not the Giant's might.
  23.
  24. He may be big, he may be strong,
  25. He may be most unkind
  26. But you have something he does not.
  27. The power of your mind."
  28.
  29. Kincaid walked to the village square
  30. With something of a plan
  31. And stabbed the giant in the foot
  32. And then he turned and ran.
  33.
  34. He ran right past the millner's house
  35. And hopped over her fence
  36.
  37. And then
  38.
  39. He hastened through the open fields
  40. Where children camped in tents
  41.
  42. And then
  43.
  44. He turned around the village church
  45. The giant followed 'round
  46. He ran for half the day and night
  47. and ran past everyone in town
  48.
  49. And then
  50.
  51. Kincaid ran down the village road,
  52. the giant in his wake
  53. He made his way through mounds of snow
  54. and crossed the frozen lake
  55.
  56.
  57. The giant followed, cracked the ice
  58. and fell into the freezing water
  59. Screaming, crying, drowning, dying
  60. West Kincaid stood on the other
  61. Side and sighed relief
  62. Lo, he had won 'cuz he was smart
  63. And yet he felt a growing worry gnawing at his heart
  64.
  65.
  66. Young West Kincaid had slain the Beast
  67. Aye, that's what heroes do
  68. And afterwards, at home
  69. He found his father, frozen too.
  70.
  71. The lesson here, I hope you'll find
  72. That's hidden here within
  73. Is truth be told, that in the end
  74. The hero always loses something.
  75.
  76. Nothing left to say, my friends,
  77. The story's all been played
  78. out. Now you've listened, now you know it all.
  79. The Song of West Kincaid.
