  1. No one suspects an inconspicuous chemist to have superpowers, but Ulysses Elkhorn VII was special. Well, not that special. He went to his job every day and performed experiments, tests, and trials for large companies. He assisted in the development of new compounds, whether they were for medicine, construction, or even poison. Throughout his career, he worked with extremely dangerous and volatile compounds and, being far too lackadaisical with his lab safety, became intermittently exposed. Not noticing any ill effects from these encounters, he was none the wiser. He would not understand his luck, or perhaps even his power, until one fateful day. Ulysses walked into work feeling much the same as always. He saw it as an escape from his failing home life and his constant marital arguments, but couldn’t bring himself to look forward to it. His job was a job, after all, and it was an extremely stressful one. After going through the motions for so long, he was growing tired of existence as a whole. After cleaning up and suiting down, he walked into his pressure-negative workspace. On this day he was slated to examine a new strain of virus that had shown up in tests and, following that, run experiments to determine any medical possibilities with a very deadly poison. This poison, usually found in the backs of South American poison dart frog, was called batrachotoxin. This name floated around in his head as he was running tests and after de-suiting, he became resolute. He would sneak away a sample of batrachotoxin as a means to an end. As he left the lab, not having found anything noteworthy, let alone groundbreaking, he felt the vial in his pocket, swishing the solution around. He knew it was hundredfold the lethal dose and felt a grim satisfaction at the finality he had assured himself. Driving to a scenic overlook, he sent a text to his spouse, apologizing for being a deadbeat husband and wished them all the best. Tossing back the vial, he felt a strange sense of calm come over him. Soon, however, he realized an issue. He felt no effects. Due to his familiarity with poisons and toxins of all sorts, he was well aware that he should not still be conscious. And that’s when an amazing and yet upsetting discovery occurred. Somehow, he had developed a resistance to at least one extremely powerful toxin. He wondered about the implications this might have on his career and his life as a whole, while he decided what he would say to his wife about the mysterious text when he got home.
