- In an instant, the icy mountainside came rushing toward the plane.
- Tajima quickly rolled the plane onto its side, just barely missing the
- mountain peak. The plane nearly grazed it while dancing upward into the
- vast heavens.
- Making a large arc in the air, Tajima glanced back. With a thunderous
- sound, followed by a loud echo, an enormous avalanche poured down the
- mountainside, headed right for Godzilla. “There we go! That’s it!”
- “Plane No. 2, ready the attack!”
- The soldiers on the landers raised a shout of joy. Following orders, the
- pilot of the second plane flew in for the attack.
- Godzilla had wriggled halfway free. In his anger, he once again spat out
- another beam of white-hot light. The second jet burst into a ball of flame,
- and with a loud bang, it exploded in midair.
- But what should happen next? The plane had managed to fire off its
- rockets during its last moments. They flew straight into the mountainside,
- creating another avalanche even bigger than the last. An incredible score!
- Snow and ice poured down on Godzilla. Once again, he struggled to
- break free. Roaring, he spat out more white-hot light. Each time he did,
- some of the snow and ice fell away from his body, tumbling downward.
- “Darn it!!” Ikeda and the others on the landers gritted their teeth. The
- third jet was closing in for its run. “Come on now! Be careful!”
- Godzilla swung his huge hand at the third plane. Meanwhile, the plane
- used the opening to shoot its rockets into the mountainside behind him. As
- the plane started its rapid ascent, it slammed into the mountain peak. KA-
- BOOM! The third jet exploded into a shower of debris.
- The soldiers in the landers looked up in astonishment, as the fourth jet
- readied its attack position.
- “Careful, careful!” The soldiers’ shouts weren’t just encouragement; they
- also contained a prayer.
- “Darn it! Here we go!!” In the pilot’s seat was Tsukioka, tightly gripping
- the jet’s steering column. He flew straight at Godzilla, who was struggling
- to raise his head from the ice. The monster was roaring again ferociously.
- Godzilla’s face expanded to fill Tsukioka’s vision as he approached. The
- monster frantically spat out a beam of white-hot light. It was like a scene
- right out of hell.
- Tsukioka managed to skillfully dodge the deadly ray. He firmly pressed
- the button to launch his weapons. Whooosh!—the rockets shot out of the
- wings on both sides of his plane, leaving white trails of smoke in their
- wake. The glittering, icy mountainsides rushed ominously toward the
- windshield.
- Tsukioka pulled on the steering column with all his might. The plane shot
- quickly upward, letting forth a disconcerting rattle as the plane just barely
- missed the peak.
- “Wow!” The troops below let out a cheer. At the same moment, there was
- an avalanche so great that it seemed to shake the earth’s very axis.
- Tsukioka’s rockets had unleashed it.
- The avalanche set off a series of other avalanches on the surrounding
- mountains. The primitive monster let forth a continuous, terrifying roar as
- Mother Nature buried his colossal form underneath a massive flow of ice.
- The despicable monster Godzilla, who had claimed so many lives and
- destroyed so much valuable property, had finally disappeared at the bottom
- of a mountain of ice in the farthest reaches of the northern sea.
- “Kobayashi . . . We finally got him. We got Godzilla!” Tsukioka’s eyes
- began to glisten and well up.
- The massive avalanche that swallowed Godzilla continued to roar,
- showing no signs of abating.
