629. To qualify as a potioneer, one must simply have their primary source of income be from potion-making, or from a source that is potions-related. These can include but are not limited to: studying potions, inventing potions, and teaching a potions class. Someone who teaches potions may also be known as a Potions Master, which means that they have achieved a N.E.W.T. in Potions. There are many famous potioneers, from Gethsemane Prickle, to Horace Slughorn. Even Fleamont Potter, father of James Potter and grand-father of Harry Potter, was a potioneer. Potter invented the Sleekeazy's Hair Potion- contributing greatly to the family's wealth.

Her mother, Pandora, accidentally died while experimenting with spells when Luna was just nine years old (an event that Luna witnessed). After the accident, Luna was raised by her father, Xenophilius, the editor of a magazine called The Quibbler. Upon coming of age, Luna attended Hogwarts and was sorted into Ravenclaw. Many of her classmates considered her weird and gave her the nickname "Loony Lovegood", in part due to The Quibbler's reputation for being rubbish lunacy. Despite this, Luna excelled in school and became a member of Dumbledore's Army, an organization led by Harry Potter. She stood by Harry Potter through everything and even fought against Voldemort's forces.

 667. Due to her father's beliefs, Luna was captured by Death Eaters and held captive at Malfoy Manor for a period of time during Voldemort's reign. After Dobby freed her and many other prisoners, she eventually participated in the Battle of Hogwarts, where Voldemort was finally defeated. After school, Luna became a Magizoologist, a person who studies magical creatures. She was responsible for discovering and classifying many new species. She married Rolf Scamander, Newt Scamander's grandson, and they had twin sons together. Luna remained close friends with Harry and Ginny Potter, who honored her by naming one of their daughters Lily Luna Potter.

 901.
On the Morality of Suggestion Spells

 902. Before one can discuss the morality of suggestion spells, one must define the understanding of such. A suggestion spell is magic used to alter an individual's mental state. In this work, the suggestion spells discussed are those that influences the mind away from reality and/or induces the mind to perform involuntary actions. This category of spells are typically used in healing, practical jokes, and many more sinister purposes. Spells such as the cheering charm, Confundus charm, memory spells, and the tickling spell are examples of the types of suggestion spells discussed.
 903.

 904. So when is it acceptable to use these spells? There are many factors to consider: moral, ethical and need. A common issue is that the use of suggestions spells is acceptable (within means) when it's necessity outweighs the moral issues.
 905.

 907.
By Kyna ( sagittaron )

 908. Suggestion spell usage is justifiable when the aurors have to use memory spells (altered reality) on muggles in order to keep the Statute of Secrecy (the needs of the many over the one). Or in the instance that one uses the Confundus charm in the case of a robbery (defense of personal property). But is it justifiable to use the such spells for fun? Does promoting a negative action toward one for the positive energy in the more justify the use of suggestion spells?
 909.

 910. As it is, drawing the balance between ethics and necessity is the largest point of contention whenever discussions of suggestion spells arise.

Some countries enforce laws forbidding any form of relationship between wizards and muggles (the American wizards can't have relationships with muggle-borns, and their wizarding community is one of the most secluded of all), and some encourage the interaction between both, but forbid the disclosure of the wizarding world's existence.

1135. This conflict between wizards and muggle-borns goes back centuries, and wizards grew especially wary of muggles during the witch-hunts period. Albus Dumbledore stated that by the 17th century, witches and wizards who chose to fraternize with muggles became a suspect and often an outcast in his/her community.

There were people against the Statute, such as the Malfoys, who wanted to declare war on the muggles, whereas other families supported the Statute and what It represented – notably, Ralston Potter was considered the "great champion of the Statue of Secrecy".The Statute states the responsibility of the Ministries, Councils and wizards for hiding their presences – including controlling magical beasts and public displays of underage magic – from the muggle world. The entire content can be found in the Ministry and most stores.

1176. While many of the notable witches and wizards come from quite esteemed pureblood or half-blood families, a good many also have arisen from families that have no traceable links to any magic at all. Hermione Granger, a muggle-born witch, has been consistently regarded as one of the best and brightest witches of her age. Coming to Hogwarts as a first year in 1991 from a family of dentists, she consistently pushed boundaries and was the first of her class to perform many of the spells asked of them. Later in life she achieved a highly sought after role within the Ministry as Minister for Magic. Lily Potter, another well known muggle-born witch, was famous to many for much darker reasons.

Harry Potter was only 15 months old when Lord Voldemort came to Godric's Hallow and cursed his parents. Lily caused the only ever known case of avoiding the Avada Kedavra curse through her love for her son. Kendra Dumbledore, the mother of Albus Dumbledore, was also from muggle descent. While many know of the Dumbledore name through Albus being Headmaster of Hogwarts, Kendra also had a vast amount of power. Sadly through her lack of control later in life, she caused her own death through an explosion.

Gobstones can be made of a variety of materials such as stone or precious metals, though neither makes a difference on actual play. When playing this game, once a point is lost, the "winning" gobstone will spit a rather revolting liquid at the loser. It is quite hilarious, if I may be so frank. Gobstones has a variety of games that can be played, but I'll focus on the Classic for now. During the Classic game, one person must knock seven gobstones out of the circle before his opponent does. Its similar to the muggle's game of marbles in that sense.

But those that stay true to the sport have a different outlook. One such professional has slated it at the top of Wizarding Spots, stating that "It requires more will and determination than Quidditch! All you have to do there is fly around on a broom." 1206. Wands are what makes the wizard, right? But what makes the wand? Wands can have varying cores, each attributing their own little characteristics into the user's magic. Some are more rare than others, but the majority of wands are made up of three different cores. The first core we will discuss is the dragon heartstring. This core lends the wand to be very powerful. However, the wand in question can easily have simpler spells committed to another owner. The second core is made of unicorn tail hair. These wands are known for their consistency and their strong bond with their first user. The third most used wand core is phoenix feather. This wand is very hard to be chosen and bonded with its user. The wand, however, will learn varied magic and excel in it.

1211. Some wands can have what are called "twin cores", similar to brothers, if you will. That means the same creature gave the material twice, such as two dragon heartstrings from the same dragon, or two phoenix feathers, as was the case with Harry Potter's and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named's wands. 1343.
The Stressed out Student's Guide to Alchemy

1344. Having covered the basics, it's about time to get down to the really important bits. You've probably already heard your professor talking about things like "transmutation" and the "Magnum Opus." The long and short of it is that all of alchemy is about creating one major thing, one final great product.
 1345.

1346. The steps to creating this product are as follows:
 1347.

1348. Nigredo (melanosis) – blackening of elements/the soul. This is the destruction of what already exists.
1349. Albedo (Leucosis) – whitening of elements/the soul. This purifies the destroyed parts.

 1351.
By Pieter ( emblo93 )

 1352.
1353. Citrinitas (Xanthosis) – yellowing of elements/ the soul. This is a strange fermentation process.
1354. Rubedo (Iosis) – reddening of elements/the soul. This is the final maturation process.
 1355.

1356. Each of these steps is performed simultaneously on a series of elements and the body/mind. This might sound a bit strange right now, and that's totally fine! Alchemy is a mix of chemistry and psychology, and it takes some getting used to. If you're just in this class for the grade, I suggest you skip ahead to page 30 right about now, where the basics of the first step of the Opus are discussed. If, however, you found that your attention is captured, keep reading! We're about to discuss what exactly it is that this Magnum Opus tries to create.

 1385.

1386. However, the aplomb was not to last. Hermes Trimegistus was not able to achieve his ultimate goal, and so he fell to something that was, if not obscurity, something unfortunately close to it. For it does not matter how powerful one is in life if death is not conquered. Hermes died and his name is lost to generations, despite remaining the undisputed king of alchemy.
 1387.

1388. But if Hermes is the king, then there must needs be a successor, a prince. One to do what the old regime could not. How could any book on alchemy be complete without mentioning this crown prince? This is, of course, none other but Nicolas Flamel.

1438. We must always be looking to the future when we speak of alchemy. We must forget the mundane past, the part of ourselves that we look to transcend. We begin with lead, we end with gold. We begin with mortality, we end with life eternal. The eyes must be transfixed forever and always on what is ahead of us in the quest. For isn't that the crux of alchemy? Why would we alchemate if not for the desire for new things? And if that's the case, why would we look back at what we are leaving behind?
 1439.

1440. It is in this line of thinking that we can begin to disregard certain elements as being of use to alchemy. Consider the primordial elements, nitrogen, oxygen. These things are useful in that they can facilitate reactions, but they themselves are not transmuted. We can also disregard elements of our own bodies as being practically useless; our

1464. In an all-too-common modern practice of worshipping old wizards as veritable gods, Nicolas Flamel has largely gone unscathed even as others such as Albus Dumbledore and Armando Dippet, once household names of virtue and power, now come under scrutiny. But is this so-called alchemist really deserving of such unwarranted praise? Is Flamel truly the paragon of wizardry that our society holds him up to be? Can one really live to be over 600 years old without having at least a few skeletons in the closet? The answer to all of these questions, I say, is no.

While I don't want to spoil the ending, let's just say that Flamel's notorious immortality might not be as amazing as once thought! In fact, Flamel is just as mortal as the rest of us. If being old was all that it took to make one a wizard of supreme power, then I know of several great-grandfathers whose names deserve to be in the history books!

The seeming redundancy of transubstantial transfiguration (redundancy is a word for fools and the unfit) is, at its heart, nothing more than a revelation of the inherent nature of the magic itself. For to transfigure is to transform, to transform is to transmute, and to transmute is to transubstantiate. The act of transfiguration is the act of transubstantiation, and to define one in terms of the other is the ultimate in knowledge and understanding.

Is it a remolding of outer appearances or a reconstruction of an inner makeup? If a turtle is changed into a teacup, does it still think as a turtle, or does it cease to think? If a person is turned into, say, a ferret, does it retain its human memories? If changed back, does it retain its ferret memories? Such accounts are uncommon, but here we delve deep. Deep, I say!

The discussion of life leaving the body can be tackled from at least twenty-nine different angles and each one has been studied in-depth. The destruction of neurons in the brain, the exsanguination of the body, the lack of any magical ability after death, even the "death" of creativity in a sense can all be studied with regards to the idea of reanimation.
 1603.

1604. In every chapter thus far, the conclusion has been the same. The body cannot have the blood put back in. The neurons cannot be re-energized. The magic cannot be forced back into the wand (a laughable notion even as I write

For centuries, witches and wizards have been obsessed with this idea of reanimation, of, particularly the Reintegration of Essence and Matter. For what is life but those two components? What are the last five hundred pages but a supremely detailed study of those two components? What is this question but the ultimate question of humanity?
 1611.

Whereas now, the name Honeydukes is a household name, at the turn of the century, candy was almost exclusively the domain of various molasses and treacle treats. These broke the teeth of children and adults alike, and many found a market lacking in variety. This, coupled with treacle's inherently non-magical nature, set the stage for a candy boom.

The spiders appeared as normal spiders but were bewitched to skitter around the table (similar to the spell used on modern chocolate frogs). It is true that older wizards would often use alchemy to do nothing more than turn base lead into gold, but those were to true alchemists what a first year student is to an Auror. There simply is no comparison.

Science is too often relegated to the realm of Muggles, but there is irrefutable proof of inherent characteristics of certain elements. Mercury, lead, gold, all elements contain certain properties that can be changed through the use of magic (among other things). But to what end?

1899. I'd now like to take the time to discuss one of the most common questions I get asked. Thelonia, they say, is it true what they say about the chicken and the toad? Thelonia, is there such a thing as a basilisk? Thelonia, is it even possible for those two species to mate? In fact, I'm so exhausted of these questions that here, in my comprehensive, best-selling work, I'm going to fill everyone in on the secret of the basilisk.

1900.
1901. Yes, basilisks are real. Yes, they are incredibly poisonous and can put you to death just by looking at you. No, there has never been a case in recent years of anyone successfully breeding a basilisk. Yes, they are hatched from a chicken's egg after being incubated by a toad. No, it's not as easy as you think. No, do not attempt to do this. Not only will it not work, you'll also be sent to Azkaban.

1906. Of course, this won't stop the questions sent to me every morning nor will it stop the persistent rumors that a basilisk lives in Hogwarts, put there by Salazar Slytherin. I think we'd all know if something that terrifying was running around a school populated by children! If there was such a thing, where would it even hide? Bathtub drains? Sink pipes? Ha! But for now, I hope we can put the matter of this petrifying beast to rest.

However, when he stepped off his broomstick in central London and opened his bag, something happened which wouldn't be forgotten for three weeks after. Clinging to the inside of one of the pipes was residue left-over from the magical waterproofing, residue which, as has been discussed, was able to waterproof the surface of anything it touches, regardless of material.

1955. When that bag opened and the pipes were allowed to breathe of fresh air, the residue was picked up by a gust of wind and carried across half of London. What followed is known by many as The Great Drought of August, 1881. The waterproofing residue made its way into the

The path of residue amongst the Muggles is unknown, but the wizards, coughing up the residue as they went about their day, passed it along to at least fifty others. The residue from the pipes prevented water from being absorbed into their systems, and to a wizard, all of them passed away.

1962.
1963. Until his death in 1890, Lattimer Youghbennd never knew that his copper pipes were the source of so much tragedy. Perhaps this is for the best, since he went on to invent many other types that are still in use today. Despite these boons, though, Youghbennd's menace was not finished yet. In 1884, his inventions would strike yet again.

2168. A Quick Biography of Bellatrix Lestrange
 2169.

2170. Bellatrix Lestrange was born Bellatrix Black in Great Britain in the year 1951. She was a proud pure-blood witch born to the wealthy Cygnus Black III and Druella Black. In 1962, Lestrange started her education at Hogwarts and was sorted into the Slytherin house. After graduation, and when Voldemort rose to power, she became a Death Eater, and was one of the most sadistic and dangerous of all the Voldemort followers. Bellatrix married Rodolphus Lestrange, who was also a wealthy pure-blood and Slytherin. The marriage seemed to be nothing more than obligatory, leading to Bella never bearing anything children. She never showed him affection, or mentions him any conversations, only marrying him to fulfill the families pure-blood line. After the fall of the Dark Lord, Bellatrix stood trial for her crimes; never denying her loyalty. She was sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban for her part in torturing two Aurors.

Bellatrix did manage to conceive a daughter with her true love, Voldemort; named Delphini sometime between 1996 and Bellatrix death. On May 2nd, 1998, in the Great Hall at Hogwarts, Bellatrix attacks Ginny Weasley with the K.illing Curse. This caused Molly Weasley to be outraged, thus resulting in the death of Bellatrix Lestrange by the K.illing Curse.

Mutatio Skullus - This hex mutates the target in yet another way (see previous editions) - by causing the target to grow extra heads. The incantation for this spell is derived from the Latin "mutatio" meaning "change" and "skullus"

2221. We are in need of new books to stock our student shelves! It is up to you, the many students of our great school, to create new tomes to fill our magnificent library. The books can be of any subject you wish, from fiction to essays to textbooks to anything at all! Of course, to count as a book, it must be at least 100 words long, and, to prevent exceptionally long pieces from taking up too much shelf space, they should be a maximum of 250 words. We don't expect you to do this for free, and so each book you write can earn up to 20 galleons, dependent on the quality of the entry! You can also earn Hogwarts Coins, one for every 10 galleons earned. If you happen to write 3 books for the library (the weekly limit for getting compensated), you might find yourself in possession of a special avatar as well. So get writing, students! The library awaits.
