  1. 1442 - Beowulf got ready,
  2. donned his war-gear, indifferent to death;
  3. his mighty, hand-forged, fine-webbed mail
  4. would soon meet with the menace underwater.
  5. It would keep the bone-cage of his body safe:
  6. no enemy's clasp could crush him in it,
  7. no vicious armlock choke his life out.
  8. To guard his head he had a glittering helmet
  9. and blurred in the upswirl. It was of beaten gold,
  10. princely headgear hooped and hasped
  11. by a weapon-smith who had worked wonders
  12. in days gone by and adorned it with boar-shapes;
  13. since then it had resisted every sword.
