  1. Something snapped within Jodah’s mind—not from that safe, secure place where he kept his spells, but from among the dark shapes, from the ice of his frozen memories. Jodah snarled and brought up his wounded arm, the pain screaming through the back of his brain, shattering the ice.

  3. The creature was surprised, though it was unclear if the confusion was from Jodah’s animal growling or the fact that he would dare struggle. Jodah reached up and grabbed the beast around its pug nose, right beneath its piglike eyes.

  5. Sweat now streamed down Jodah’s forehead, and he felt all his energy go into what should have been a simple task—holding onto the minion and telling it what to do — at least, a simple task for an archmage.

  7. “Go,” he said through clenched teeth, “away!”

  9. And that was it. Leshrac’s creature dissolved as Jodah spoke, its spirit returned to its place of origin, its physical body blasted to small motes and blown out the mouth of the cavern. The pieces of the summoned beast scattered over the side of the mountain outside the cavern like black snow.
