  5.
  6. #FreeLorax - At the far end of town
  7.
  8. #FreeLorax - where the Grickle-grass grows
  9.
  10. #FreeLorax - and the wind smells slow-and-sour when it blows
  11.
  12. #FreeLorax - and no birds ever sing excepting old crows...
  13.
  14. #FreeLorax - is the Street of the Lifted Lorax.
  15.
  16. #FreeLorax - And deep in the Grickle-grass, some people say,
  17.
  18. #FreeLorax - if you look deep enough you can still see, today,
  19.
  20. #FreeLorax - where the Lorax once stood
  21.
  22. #FreeLorax - just as long as it could
  23.
  24. #FreeLorax - before somebody lifted the Lorax away.
  25.
  26. #FreeLorax - What was the Lorax?
  27.
  28. #FreeLorax - Any why was it there?
  29.
  30. #FreeLorax - And why was it lifted and taken somewhere
  31.
  32. #FreeLorax - from the far end of town where the Grickle-grass grows?
  33.
  34. #FreeLorax - The old Once-ler still lives here.
  35.
  36. #FreeLorax - Ask him. He knows.
  37.
  38. #FreeLorax - You won't see the Once-ler.
  39.
  40. #FreeLorax - Don't knock at his door.
  41.
  42. #FreeLorax - He stays in his Lerkim on top of his store.
  43.
  44. #FreeLorax - He stays in his Lerkim, cold under the roor,
  45.
  46. #FreeLorax - where he makes his own clothes
  47.
  48. #FreeLorax - out of miff-muffered moof.
  49.
  50. #FreeLorax - And on special dank midnights in August,
  51.
  52. #FreeLorax - he peeks out of the shutters
  53.
  54. #FreeLorax - and sometimes he speaks
  55.
  56. #FreeLorax - and tells how the Lorax was lifted away.
  57.
  58. #FreeLorax - He'll tell you, perhaps...
  59.
  60. #FreeLorax - if you're willing to pay.
  61.
  62. #FreeLorax - On the end of a rope
  63.
  64. #FreeLorax - he lets down a tin pail
  65.
  66. #FreeLorax - and you have to toss in fifteen cents
  67.
  68. #FreeLorax - and a nail
  69.
  70. #FreeLorax - and the shell of a great-great-great-
  71.
  72. #FreeLorax - grandfather snail.
  73.
  74. #FreeLorax - Then he pulls up the pail,
  75.
  76. #FreeLorax - makes a most careful count
  77.
  78. #FreeLorax - to see if you've paid him
  79.
  80. #FreeLorax - the proper amount.
  81.
  82. #FreeLorax - Then he hides what you paid him
  83.
  84. #FreeLorax - away in his Snuvv,
  85.
  86. #FreeLorax - his secret strange hole
  87.
  88. #FreeLorax - in his gruvvulous glove.
  89.
  90. #FreeLorax - Then he grunts, I will call you by Whisper-ma-Phone,
  91.
  92. #FreeLorax - for the secrets I tell you are for your ears alone.
  93.
  94. #FreeLorax - SLUPP
  95.
  96. #FreeLorax - Down slupps the Whisper-ma-Phone to your ear
  97.
  98. #FreeLorax - and the old Once-ler's whispers are not very clear,
  99.
  100. #FreeLorax - since they have to come down
  101.
  102. #FreeLorax - through a snergelly hose,
  103.
  104. #FreeLorax - and he sounds as if he had
  105.
  106. #FreeLorax - smallish bees up his nose.
  107.
  108. #FreeLorax - Now I'll tell you, he says, with his teeth sounding gray,
  109.
  110. #FreeLorax - how the Lorax got lifted and taken away...
  111.
  112. #FreeLorax - It all started way back...
  113.
  114. #FreeLorax - such a long, long time back...
  115.
  116. #FreeLorax - Way back in the days when the grass was still green
  117.
  118. #FreeLorax - and the pond was still wet
  119.
  120. #FreeLorax - and the clouds were still clean,
  121.
  122. #FreeLorax - and the song of the Swomee-Swans rang out in space...
  123.
  124. #FreeLorax - one morning, I came to this glorious place.
  125.
  126. #FreeLorax - And I first saw the trees!
  127.
  128. #FreeLorax - The Truffula Trees!
  129.
  130. #FreeLorax - The bright-colored tufts of the Truffula Trees!
  131.
  132. #FreeLorax - Mile after mile in the fresh morning breeze.
  133.
  134. #FreeLorax - And under the trees, I saw Brown Bar-ba-loots
  135.
  136. #FreeLorax - frisking about in their Bar-ba-loot suits
  137.
  138. #FreeLorax - as the played in the shade and ate Truffula Fruits.
  139.
  140. #FreeLorax - From the rippulous pond
  141.
  142. #FreeLorax - came the comfortable sound
  143.
  144. #FreeLorax - of the Humming-Fish humming
  145.
  146. #FreeLorax - while splashing around.
  147.
  148. #FreeLorax - But those trees! Those trees!
  149.
  150. #FreeLorax - Those Truffula Trees!
  151.
  152. #FreeLorax - All my life I'd been searching
  153.
  154. #FreeLorax - for trees such as these.
  155.
  156. #FreeLorax - The touch of their tufts
  157.
  158. #FreeLorax - was much softer than silk.
  159.
  160. #FreeLorax - And they had the sweet smell
  161.
  162. #FreeLorax - of fresh butterfly milk.
  163.
  164. #FreeLorax - I felt a great leaping
  165.
  166. #FreeLorax - of joy in my heart.
  167.
  168. #FreeLorax - I knew just what I'd do!
  169.
  170. #FreeLorax - I unloaded my cart.
  171.
  172. #FreeLorax - In no time at all, I had built a small shop.
  173.
  174. #FreeLorax - Then I chopped down a Truffula Tree with one chop.
  175.
  176. #FreeLorax - And with great skillful skill and with great speedy speed,
  177.
  178. #FreeLorax - I took the soft tuft. And I knitted a Thneed!
  179.
  180. #FreeLorax - The instand I'd finished, I heard a ga-Zump!
  181.
  182. #FreeLorax - I looked.
  183.
  184. #FreeLorax - I saw something pop out of the stump
  185.
  186. #FreeLorax - of the tree I'd chopped down. It was sort of a man.
  187.
  188. #FreeLorax - Describe him?...That's hard. I don't know if I can.
  189.
  190. #FreeLorax - He was shortish. And oldish.
  191.
  192. #FreeLorax - And brownish. And mossy.
  193.
  194. #FreeLorax - And he spoke with a voice
  195.
  196. #FreeLorax - that was sharpish and bossy.
  197.
  198. #FreeLorax - Mister! he said with a sawdusty sneeze,
  199.
  200. #FreeLorax - I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees.
  201.
  202. #FreeLorax - I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues.
  203.
  204. #FreeLorax - And I'm asking you, sir, at the top of my lungs--
  205.
  206. #FreeLorax - he was very upset as he shouted and puffed--
  207.
  208. #FreeLorax - What's that THING you've made out of my Truffula tuft?
  209.
  210. #FreeLorax - Look, Lorax, I said. There's no cause for alarm.
  211.
  212. #FreeLorax - I chopped just one tree. I am doing no harm.
  213.
  214. #FreeLorax - I'm being quite useful. This thing is a Thneed.
  215.
  216. #FreeLorax - A Thneed's a Fine-Something-That-All-People-Need!
  217.
  218. #FreeLorax - It«s a shirt. It's a sock. It's a glove. It's a hat.
  219.
  220. #FreeLorax - But it has other uses. Yes, far beyond that.
  221.
  222. #FreeLorax - You can use it for carpets. For pillows! For sheets!
  223.
  224. #FreeLorax - Or curtains! Or covers for bicycle seats!
  225.
  226. #FreeLorax - The Lorax said,
  227.
  228. #FreeLorax - Sir! You are crazy with greed.
  229.
  230. #FreeLorax - There is no one on earth
  231.
  232. #FreeLorax - who would buy that fool Thneed!
  233.
  234. #FreeLorax - But the very next minute I proved he was wrong.
  235.
  236. #FreeLorax - For, just at that minute, a chap came along,
  237.
  238. #FreeLorax - and he thought that the Thneed I had knitted was great.
  239.
  240. #FreeLorax - He happily bought it for three ninety-eight.
  241.
  242. #FreeLorax - I laughed at the Lorax, You poor stupid guy!
  243.
  244. #FreeLorax - You never can tell what some people will buy.
  245.
  246. #FreeLorax - I repeat, cried the Lorax,
  247.
  248. #FreeLorax - I speak for the trees!
  249.
  250. #FreeLorax - I'm busy, I told him.
  251.
  252. #FreeLorax - Shut up, if you please.
  253.
  254. #FreeLorax - I rushed 'cross the room, and in no time at all,
  255.
  256. #FreeLorax - built a radio-phone. I put in a quick call.
  257.
  258. #FreeLorax - I called all my brothers and uncles and aunts
  259.
  260. #FreeLorax - and I said, Listen here! Here's a wonderful chance
  261.
  262. #FreeLorax - for the whole Once-ler Family to get mighty rich!
  263.
  264. #FreeLorax - Get over here fast! Take the road to North Nitch.
  265.
  266. #FreeLorax - Turn left at Weehawken. Sharp right at South Stich.
  267.
  268. #FreeLorax - And, in no time at all,
  269.
  270. #FreeLorax - in the factory I built,
  271.
  272. #FreeLorax - the whole Once-ler Family
  273.
  274. #FreeLorax - was working full tilt.
  275.
  276. #FreeLorax - We were all knitting Thneeds
  277.
  278. #FreeLorax - just as busy as bees,
  279.
  280. #FreeLorax - to the sound of the chopping
  281.
  282. #FreeLorax - of Truffula Trees.
  283.
  284. #FreeLorax - Then...
  285.
  286. #FreeLorax - Oh! Baby! Oh!
  287.
  288. #FreeLorax - How my business did grow!
  289.
  290. #FreeLorax - Now, chopping one tree
  291.
  292. #FreeLorax - at a time was too slow.
  293.
  294. #FreeLorax - So I quickly invented my Super-Axe-Hacker
  295.
  296. #FreeLorax - which whacked off four Truffula Trees at one smacker.
  297.
  298. #FreeLorax - We were making Thneeds
  299.
  300. #FreeLorax - four times as fast as before!
  301.
  302. #FreeLorax - And that Lorax?... He didn't show up any more.
  303.
  304. #FreeLorax - But the next week
  305.
  306. #FreeLorax - he knocked on my new office door.
  307.
  308. #FreeLorax - He snapped, I'm the Lorax who speaks for the trees
  309.
  310. #FreeLorax - which you seem to be chopping as fast as you please.
  311.
  312. #FreeLorax - But I'm also in charge of the Brown Bar-ba-loots
  313.
  314. #FreeLorax - who played in the shade in their Bar-ba-loot suits
  315.
  316. #FreeLorax - and happily lived, eating Truffula Fruits.
  317.
  318. #FreeLorax - NOW...thanks to your hacking my trees to the ground,
  319.
  320. #FreeLorax - there's not enough Truffula Fruit to go 'round.
  321.
  322. #FreeLorax - And my poor Bar-ba-loots are all getting the crummies
  323.
  324. #FreeLorax - because they have gas, and no food, in their tummies!
  325.
  326. #FreeLorax - They loved living here. But I can't let them stay.
  327.
  328. #FreeLorax - They'll have to find food. And I hope that they may.
  329.
  330. #FreeLorax - Good luck, boys, he cried. And he sent them away.
  331.
  332. #FreeLorax - I, the Once-ler, felt sad
  333.
  334. #FreeLorax - as I watched them all go.
  335.
  336. #FreeLorax - BUT...
  337.
  338. #FreeLorax - business is business!
  339.
  340. #FreeLorax - And business must grow
  341.
  342. #FreeLorax - regardless of crummies in tummies, you know.
  343.
  344. #FreeLorax - I meant no harm. I most truly did not.
  345.
  346. #FreeLorax - But I had to grow bigger. So bigger I got.
  347.
  348. #FreeLorax - I biggered my factory. I biggered my roads.
  349.
  350. #FreeLorax - I biggered my wagons. I biggered the loads
  351.
  352. #FreeLorax - of the Thneeds I shipped out. I was shipping them forth
  353.
  354. #FreeLorax - to the South! To the East! To the West! To the North!
  355.
  356. #FreeLorax - I went right on biggering...selling more Thneeds.
  357.
  358. #FreeLorax - And I biggered my money, which everyone needs.
  359.
  360. #FreeLorax - Then again he came back! I was fixing some pipes
  361.
  362. #FreeLorax - when that old nuisance Lorax came back with more gripes.
  363.
  364. #FreeLorax - I am the Lorax, he coughed and he whiffed.
  365.
  366. #FreeLorax - He sneezed and he snuffled. He snarggled. He sniffed.
  367.
  368. #FreeLorax - Once-ler! he cried with a cruffulous croak.
  369.
  370. #FreeLorax - Once-ler! You're making such smogulous smoke!
  371.
  372. #FreeLorax - My poor Swomee-Swans...why, they can't sing a note!
  373.
  374. #FreeLorax - No one can sing who has smog in his throat.
  375.
  376. #FreeLorax - And so, said the Lorax,
  377.
  378. #FreeLorax - --please pardon my cough--
  379.
  380. #FreeLorax - they cannot live here.
  381.
  382. #FreeLorax - So I'm sending them off.
  383.
  384. #FreeLorax - Where will they go?...
  385.
  386. #FreeLorax - I don't hopefully know.
  387.
  388. #FreeLorax - They may have to fly for a month...or a year...
  389.
  390. #FreeLorax - To escape from the smog you've smogged-up around here.
  391.
  392. #FreeLorax - What's more, snapped the Lorax. (His dander was up.)
  393.
  394. #FreeLorax - Let me say a few words about Gluppity-Glupp.
  395.
  396. #FreeLorax - Your machinery chugs on, day and night without stop
  397.
  398. #FreeLorax - making Gluppity-Glup. Also Schloppity-Schlopp.
  399.
  400. #FreeLorax - And what do you do with this leftover goo?...
  401.
  402. #FreeLorax - I'll show you. You dirty old Once-ler man, you!
  403.
  404. #FreeLorax - You're glumping the pond where the Humming-Fish hummed!
  405.
  406. #FreeLorax - No more can they hum, for their gills are all gummed.
  407.
  408. #FreeLorax - So I'm sending them off. Oh, their future is dreary.
  409.
  410. #FreeLorax - They'll walk on their fins and get woefully weary
  411.
  412. #FreeLorax - in search of some water that isn't so smeary.
  413.
  414. #FreeLorax - And then I got mad.
  415.
  416. #FreeLorax - I got terribly mad.
  417.
  418. #FreeLorax - I yelled at the Lorax, Now listen here, Dad!
  419.
  420. #FreeLorax - All you do is yap-yap and say, Bad! Bad! Bad! Bad!
  421.
  422. #FreeLorax - Well, I have my rights, sir, and I'm telling you
  423.
  424. #FreeLorax - I intend to go on doing just what I do!
  425.
  426. #FreeLorax - And, for your information, you Lorax, I'm figgering
  427.
  428. #FreeLorax - on biggering
  429.
  430. #FreeLorax - and Biggering
  431.
  432. #FreeLorax - and BIGGERING
  433.
  434. #FreeLorax - and BIGGERING!!
  435.
  436. #FreeLorax - turning MORE Truffula Trees into Thneeds
  437.
  438. #FreeLorax - which everyone, EVERYONE, EVERYONE needs!
  439.
  440. #FreeLorax - And at that very moment, we heard a loud whack!
  441.
  442. #FreeLorax - From outside in the fields came a sickening smack
  443.
  444. #FreeLorax - of an axe on a tree. Then we heard the tree fall.
  445.
  446. #FreeLorax - The very last Truffula Tree of them all!
  447.
  448. #FreeLorax - No more trees. No more Thneeds. No more work to be done.
  449.
  450. #FreeLorax - So, in no time, my uncles and aunts, every one,
  451.
  452. #FreeLorax - all waved my good-bye. They jumped into my cars
  453.
  454. #FreeLorax - and drove away under the smoke-smuggered stars.
  455.
  456. #FreeLorax - Now all that was left 'neath the bad-smelling sky
  457.
  458. #FreeLorax - was my big empty factory...
  459.
  460. #FreeLorax - the Lorax...
  461.
  462. #FreeLorax - and I.
  463.
  464. #FreeLorax - The Lorax said nothing. Just gave me a glance...
  465.
  466. #FreeLorax - just gave me a very sad, sad backward glance...
  467.
  468. #FreeLorax - as he lifted himself by the seat of his pants.
  469.
  470. #FreeLorax - And I'll never forget the grim look on his face
  471.
  472. #FreeLorax - when he hoisted himself and took leave of this place,
  473.
  474. #FreeLorax - through a hole in the smog, without leaving a trace.
  475.
  476. #FreeLorax - And all that the Lorax left here in this mess
  477.
  478. #FreeLorax - was a small pile of rocks, with one word...
  479.
  480. #FreeLorax - UNLESS.
  481.
  482. #FreeLorax - Whatever that meant, well, I just couldn't guess.
  483.
  484. #FreeLorax - That was long, long ago.
  485.
  486. #FreeLorax - But each day since that day
  487.
  488. #FreeLorax - I've sat here and worried
  489.
  490. #FreeLorax - and worried away.
  491.
  492. #FreeLorax - Through the years, while my buildings
  493.
  494. #FreeLorax - have fallen apart,
  495.
  496. #FreeLorax - I've worried about it
  497.
  498. #FreeLorax - with all of my heart.
  499.
  500. #FreeLorax - But now, says the Once-ler,
  501.
  502. #FreeLorax - Now that you're here,
  503.
  504. #FreeLorax - the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear.
  505.
  506. #FreeLorax - UNLESS someone like you
  507.
  508. #FreeLorax - cares a whole awful lot,
  509.
  510. #FreeLorax - nothing is going to get better.
  511.
