#FreeLorax - and the wind smells slow-and-sour when it blows

#FreeLorax - and no birds ever sing excepting old crows...

#FreeLorax - is the Street of the Lifted Lorax.

#FreeLorax - And deep in the Grickle-grass, some people say,

#FreeLorax - if you look deep enough you can still see, today,

#FreeLorax - where the Lorax once stood

#FreeLorax - just as long as it could

#FreeLorax - before somebody lifted the Lorax away.

#FreeLorax - What was the Lorax?

#FreeLorax - Any why was it there?

#FreeLorax - And why was it lifted and taken somewhere

#FreeLorax - from the far end of town where the Grickle-grass grows?

#FreeLorax - The old Once-ler still lives here.

#FreeLorax - Ask him. He knows.

#FreeLorax - You won't see the Once-ler.

#FreeLorax - Don't knock at his door.

#FreeLorax - He stays in his Lerkim on top of his store.

#FreeLorax - He stays in his Lerkim, cold under the roor,

#FreeLorax - where he makes his own clothes

#FreeLorax - out of miff-muffered moof.

#FreeLorax - And on special dank midnights in August,

#FreeLorax - he peeks out of the shutters

#FreeLorax - and sometimes he speaks

#FreeLorax - and tells how the Lorax was lifted away.

#FreeLorax - He'll tell you, perhaps...

#FreeLorax - if you're willing to pay.

#FreeLorax - On the end of a rope

#FreeLorax - he lets down a tin pail

#FreeLorax - and you have to toss in fifteen cents

#FreeLorax - and a nail

#FreeLorax - and the shell of a great-great-great-

#FreeLorax - grandfather snail.

#FreeLorax - Then he pulls up the pail,

#FreeLorax - makes a most careful count

#FreeLorax - to see if you've paid him

#FreeLorax - the proper amount.

#FreeLorax - Then he hides what you paid him

#FreeLorax - in his gruvvulous glove.

#FreeLorax - Down slupps the Whisper-ma-Phone to your ear

#FreeLorax - and the old Once-ler's whispers are not very clear,

#FreeLorax - since they have to come down

#FreeLorax - through a snergelly hose,

#FreeLorax - and he sounds as if he had

#FreeLorax - smallish bees up his nose.

#FreeLorax - Now I'll tell you, he says, with his teeth sounding gray,

#FreeLorax - how the Lorax got lifted and taken away...

#FreeLorax - It all started way back...

#FreeLorax - such a long, long time back...

#FreeLorax - Way back in the days when the grass was still green

#FreeLorax - and the pond was still wet

#FreeLorax - and the clouds were still clean,

#FreeLorax - and the song of the Swomee-Swans rang out in space...

#FreeLorax - one morning, I came to this glorious place.

#FreeLorax - And I first saw the trees!

#FreeLorax - The Truffula Trees!

#FreeLorax - The bright-colored tufts of the Truffula Trees!

#FreeLorax - Mile after mile in the fresh morning breeze.

#FreeLorax - And under the trees, I saw Brown Bar-ba-loots

#FreeLorax - frisking about in their Bar-ba-loot suits

#FreeLorax - as the played in the shade and ate Truffula Fruits.

#FreeLorax - From the rippulous pond

#FreeLorax - came the comfortable sound

#FreeLorax - of the Humming-Fish humming

#FreeLorax - while splashing around.

#FreeLorax - But those trees! Those trees!

#FreeLorax - Those Truffula Trees!

#FreeLorax - All my life I'd been searching

#FreeLorax - for trees such as these.

#FreeLorax - The touch of their tufts

#FreeLorax - was much softer than silk.

#FreeLorax - And they had the sweet smell

#FreeLorax - of fresh butterfly milk.

#FreeLorax - I felt a great leaping

#FreeLorax - of joy in my heart.

#FreeLorax - I knew just what I'd do!

#FreeLorax - I unloaded my cart.

#FreeLorax - In no time at all, I had built a small shop.

#FreeLorax - Then I chopped down a Truffula Tree with one chop.

#FreeLorax - And with great skillful skill and with great speedy speed,

#FreeLorax - I took the soft tuft. And I knitted a Thneed!

#FreeLorax - The instand I'd finished, I heard a ga-Zump!

#FreeLorax - I looked.

#FreeLorax - I saw something pop out of the stump

#FreeLorax - of the tree I'd chopped down. It was sort of a man.

#FreeLorax - Describe him?...That's hard. I don't know if I can.

#FreeLorax - He was shortish. And oldish.

#FreeLorax - And brownish. And mossy.

#FreeLorax - And he spoke with a voice

#FreeLorax - that was sharpish and bossy.

#FreeLorax - Mister! he said with a sawdusty sneeze,

#FreeLorax - I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees.

#FreeLorax - I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues.

#FreeLorax - And I'm asking you, sir, at the top of my lungs--

#FreeLorax - he was very upset as he shouted and puffed--

#FreeLorax - What's that THING you've made out of my Truffula tuft?

#FreeLorax - Look, Lorax, I said. There's no cause for alarm.

#FreeLorax - I chopped just one tree. I am doing no harm.

#FreeLorax - I'm being quite useful. This thing is a Thneed.

#FreeLorax - A Thneed's a Fine-Something-That-All-People-Need!

#FreeLorax - It«s a shirt. It's a sock. It's a glove. It's a hat.

#FreeLorax - But it has other uses. Yes, far beyond that.

#FreeLorax - You can use it for carpets. For pillows! For sheets!

#FreeLorax - Or curtains! Or covers for bicycle seats!

#FreeLorax - The Lorax said,

#FreeLorax - Sir! You are crazy with greed.

#FreeLorax - There is no one on earth

#FreeLorax - who would buy that fool Thneed!

#FreeLorax - But the very next minute I proved he was wrong.

#FreeLorax - For, just at that minute, a chap came along,

#FreeLorax - and he thought that the Thneed I had knitted was great.

#FreeLorax - He happily bought it for three ninety-eight.

#FreeLorax - I laughed at the Lorax, You poor stupid guy!

#FreeLorax - You never can tell what some people will buy.

#FreeLorax - I repeat, cried the Lorax,

#FreeLorax - I speak for the trees!

#FreeLorax - I'm busy, I told him.

#FreeLorax - Shut up, if you please.

#FreeLorax - I rushed 'cross the room, and in no time at all,

#FreeLorax - built a radio-phone. I put in a quick call.

#FreeLorax - I called all my brothers and uncles and aunts

#FreeLorax - and I said, Listen here! Here's a wonderful chance

#FreeLorax - for the whole Once-ler Family to get mighty rich!

#FreeLorax - Get over here fast! Take the road to North Nitch.

#FreeLorax - Turn left at Weehawken. Sharp right at South Stich.

#FreeLorax - And, in no time at all,

#FreeLorax - in the factory I built,

#FreeLorax - the whole Once-ler Family

#FreeLorax - was working full tilt.

#FreeLorax - We were all knitting Thneeds

#FreeLorax - just as busy as bees,

#FreeLorax - to the sound of the chopping

#FreeLorax - of Truffula Trees.

#FreeLorax - Then...

#FreeLorax - Oh! Baby! Oh!

#FreeLorax - How my business did grow!

#FreeLorax - Now, chopping one tree

#FreeLorax - at a time was too slow.

#FreeLorax - So I quickly invented my Super-Axe-Hacker

#FreeLorax - which whacked off four Truffula Trees at one smacker.

#FreeLorax - We were making Thneeds

#FreeLorax - four times as fast as before!

#FreeLorax - And that Lorax?... He didn't show up any more.

#FreeLorax - But the next week

#FreeLorax - he knocked on my new office door.

#FreeLorax - He snapped, I'm the Lorax who speaks for the trees

#FreeLorax - which you seem to be chopping as fast as you please.

#FreeLorax - But I'm also in charge of the Brown Bar-ba-loots

#FreeLorax - who played in the shade in their Bar-ba-loot suits

#FreeLorax - and happily lived, eating Truffula Fruits.

#FreeLorax - NOW...thanks to your hacking my trees to the ground,

#FreeLorax - there's not enough Truffula Fruit to go 'round.

#FreeLorax - And my poor Bar-ba-loots are all getting the crummies

#FreeLorax - because they have gas, and no food, in their tummies!

#FreeLorax - They loved living here. But I can't let them stay.

#FreeLorax - They'll have to find food. And I hope that they may.

#FreeLorax - Good luck, boys, he cried. And he sent them away.

#FreeLorax - I, the Once-ler, felt sad

#FreeLorax - as I watched them all go.

#FreeLorax - BUT...

#FreeLorax - business is business!

#FreeLorax - And business must grow

#FreeLorax - regardless of crummies in tummies, you know.

#FreeLorax - I meant no harm. I most truly did not.

#FreeLorax - But I had to grow bigger. So bigger I got.

#FreeLorax - I biggered my factory. I biggered my roads.

#FreeLorax - I biggered my wagons. I biggered the loads

#FreeLorax - of the Thneeds I shipped out. I was shipping them forth

#FreeLorax - to the South! To the East! To the West! To the North!

#FreeLorax - I went right on biggering...selling more Thneeds.

#FreeLorax - And I biggered my money, which everyone needs.

#FreeLorax - Then again he came back! I was fixing some pipes

#FreeLorax - when that old nuisance Lorax came back with more gripes.

#FreeLorax - I am the Lorax, he coughed and he whiffed.

#FreeLorax - He sneezed and he snuffled. He snarggled. He sniffed.

#FreeLorax - Once-ler! he cried with a cruffulous croak.

#FreeLorax - Once-ler! You're making such smogulous smoke!

#FreeLorax - My poor Swomee-Swans...why, they can't sing a note!

#FreeLorax - No one can sing who has smog in his throat.

#FreeLorax - And so, said the Lorax,

#FreeLorax - --please pardon my cough--

#FreeLorax - they cannot live here.

#FreeLorax - So I'm sending them off.

#FreeLorax - Where will they go?...

#FreeLorax - I don't hopefully know.

#FreeLorax - They may have to fly for a month...or a year...

#FreeLorax - To escape from the smog you've smogged-up around here.

#FreeLorax - What's more, snapped the Lorax. (His dander was up.)

#FreeLorax - Let me say a few words about Gluppity-Glupp.

#FreeLorax - Your machinery chugs on, day and night without stop

#FreeLorax - making Gluppity-Glup. Also Schloppity-Schlopp.

#FreeLorax - And what do you do with this leftover goo?...

#FreeLorax - I'll show you. You dirty old Once-ler man, you!

#FreeLorax - You're glumping the pond where the Humming-Fish hummed!

#FreeLorax - No more can they hum, for their gills are all gummed.

#FreeLorax - So I'm sending them off. Oh, their future is dreary.

#FreeLorax - They'll walk on their fins and get woefully weary

#FreeLorax - in search of some water that isn't so smeary.

#FreeLorax - And then I got mad.

#FreeLorax - I got terribly mad.

#FreeLorax - I yelled at the Lorax, Now listen here, Dad!

#FreeLorax - All you do is yap-yap and say, Bad! Bad! Bad! Bad!

#FreeLorax - Well, I have my rights, sir, and I'm telling you

#FreeLorax - I intend to go on doing just what I do!

#FreeLorax - And, for your information, you Lorax, I'm figgering

#FreeLorax - on biggering

#FreeLorax - and Biggering

#FreeLorax - and BIGGERING

#FreeLorax - and BIGGERING!!

#FreeLorax - turning MORE Truffula Trees into Thneeds

#FreeLorax - which everyone, EVERYONE, EVERYONE needs!

#FreeLorax - And at that very moment, we heard a loud whack!

#FreeLorax - From outside in the fields came a sickening smack

#FreeLorax - of an axe on a tree. Then we heard the tree fall.

#FreeLorax - The very last Truffula Tree of them all!

#FreeLorax - No more trees. No more Thneeds. No more work to be done.

#FreeLorax - So, in no time, my uncles and aunts, every one,

#FreeLorax - all waved my good-bye. They jumped into my cars

#FreeLorax - and drove away under the smoke-smuggered stars.

#FreeLorax - Now all that was left 'neath the bad-smelling sky

#FreeLorax - was my big empty factory...

#FreeLorax - the Lorax...

#FreeLorax - and I.

#FreeLorax - The Lorax said nothing. Just gave me a glance...

#FreeLorax - just gave me a very sad, sad backward glance...

#FreeLorax - as he lifted himself by the seat of his pants.

#FreeLorax - And I'll never forget the grim look on his face

#FreeLorax - when he hoisted himself and took leave of this place,

#FreeLorax - through a hole in the smog, without leaving a trace.

#FreeLorax - And all that the Lorax left here in this mess

#FreeLorax - was a small pile of rocks, with one word...

#FreeLorax - UNLESS.

#FreeLorax - Whatever that meant, well, I just couldn't guess.

#FreeLorax - That was long, long ago.

#FreeLorax - But each day since that day

#FreeLorax - I've sat here and worried

#FreeLorax - and worried away.

#FreeLorax - Through the years, while my buildings

#FreeLorax - have fallen apart,

#FreeLorax - I've worried about it

#FreeLorax - with all of my heart.

#FreeLorax - But now, says the Once-ler,

#FreeLorax - Now that you're here,

#FreeLorax - the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear.

#FreeLorax - UNLESS someone like you

#FreeLorax - cares a whole awful lot,

#FreeLorax - nothing is going to get better.

#FreeLorax - It's not.

#FreeLorax - SO...

#FreeLorax - Catch! calls the Once-ler.

#FreeLorax - He lets something fall.

#FreeLorax - It's a Truffula Seed.

#FreeLorax - It's the last one of all!

#FreeLorax - You're in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds.

#FreeLorax - And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.

#FreeLorax - Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.

#FreeLorax - Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.

#FreeLorax - Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.

#FreeLorax - Then the Lorax

#FreeLorax - and all of his friends

#FreeLorax - may come back.
