  1. Noelle had been so stupid. Kris told her Susie ate chalk, and not only had she BELIEVED them, she even believed that by "chalk", Kris had meant actual chalk.
  2.
  3. Her mom had talked enough about Susie's "Type" that it shouldn't have taken her a full day to realize what it really meant.
  4.
  5. The problem was - she wasn't familiar with controlled substances jargon. If she were to acquire a present for Susie, she would have to be subtle about it.
  6.
  7. She located a suitable alley. It was dark, it was narrow, it was smelly, and most importantly, there was a shady hooded figure inside it, an obvious member of Hometown's Criminal Element.
  8.
  9. She sidled into the alley, and coughed.
  10.
  11. "Gesundheit!" The unexpected cheerfulness of the voice destabilized her, and for a moment, she considered running off. But it was too late for that.
  12.
  13. "Say..." Noelle started, with her face turned away and her voice made gruff and low-pitched. "Do you know where someone could find... chalk?"
  14.
  15. "Chalk?"
  16.
  17. "Chalk. The, uh, white stuff." She hoped that was a recognized synonym.
  18.
  19. "Chalk! Calcium carbonate!" the stranger almost shouted. "Why, you're in luck! I happen to have a pack on me!"
  20.
  21. She glanced to the entrance of the alley, worried about being overheard.
  22.
  23. "Yeah. That."
  24.
  25. "Why, here you go!" A carton was pressed into her hand. "No need to thank me!"
  26.
  27. She took that as a sign no payment was necessary, and started walking away. She had been warned about the tactic - get people hooked before extracting payment.
  28.
  29. She felt guilty about caught up in this, but she really needed to make things work with Susie.
  30.
  31. She looked at the carton. It was a real chalk carton, the same they used at school. She supposed inconspicuous packaging was useful.
  32.
  33.
  34. Meanwhile, Papyrus was surprised but excited about his new experience. He wondered why that nice lady had come to him of all people for chalk. Probably on account of all the calcium in his bones.
