Bayezid: Magus Casting Techniques Lesson - Runecasting I

[08:34] The boy already had a notebook out and ready, pen-in-hand, ready to scribe away! His eyes: Hungry for knowledge, and desperate to fulfill the missing links in his magus studies.

"Please, I've been trying to learn about all of the magus casting techniques thus far. I haven't quite got the whole magic casting thing down yet, but I have a theory I've been working on!" He exclaimed, briefly showcasing his notebook full of manic scribbles -- clearly, he hadn't had the time to clean up his notes yet.

Despite that? He dotted at his work with the blunt end of his pen to try and make sense of his notes thus far.

"Symbolic Casting, Visionary Casting and even Wordcasting are different techniques I've been preparing to study and practice, but I've only -heard- of runecasting! If you would be so kind as to help me fill in this gap, I would be in your debt!" He flipped the notebook around, wagging his pen for...

Nothing in particular -- simply eager to write more down, before the ideas could escape him, or words lost in the world betwixt him and this would-be teacher.

Though, he couldn't completely disregard his brother! Suleiman had his sights on something else -- which, unfortunately would digress from his unfinished work.
He passed a glance with a waved hand, trying to urge them to offer patience as he awaited an answer.

[08:42] He rolled his eyes a little at the ratkin from Xuefeng.

"Right. Desire for knowledge I guess. And trying to understand all the different types of casting."

He tugs his wings a little closer to himself on his back, while he leans forward and rests his chin against a closed fist, as he assumed a thinkers pose.

"Symbolic Casting is the most common form of casting. You symbolise what you want to happen and how, and that desire and acting lets you do so."

"Visionary Casting is when you look inward, channel your mana through your circuits just right. People tend to have weird eyecolors during that."

"Word Casting is speaking magic into existence, sort of. If you have observed a ritual or priest for example that is speaking out it's desires, that is basicly word casting."

"Rune Casting is writing magic into existence. Runes are sort of the language of the divine and hold power. And through that power, one is able to do things like, for example, enchant a sword, attune it to an element or write out a series of instructions of what is supposed to happen."

"In the sense of Rune Casting, that basicly boils down to writing out the spell that you want to perform, or create a sorcerous ritual of sorts that helps channel ether and magic into exactly what you want it to do. It is a little more time consuming but tends to be quite effective and powerful if done properly."

"Does that satisfy your curiosity?"

[08:49] That was an explanation, but between the eye roll and the description the boy found himself taking notes that hardly felt dissimilar from what he had already acquired from the faeborne from earlier. Thus, he found himself driven to pry.

"Well, yes - but no." There was some concern in this... Some dread, even. Perhaps, he was overstepped in the magus territory. Even with his brother here, he wasn't entirely certain that these individuals truly even had an iota's worth of interest in teaching him as the woman before had.

"I kinda knew about that... Writing out rituals with an ancient language and stuff. Its the stuff concerning the magic circles that kinda confuses me." He clarified. "Something about being able to use it avidly, just as freely and fluidly as other magi would conduct the other three casting methods I mentioned earlier." There was a pause, as though attempting to recall something. Appearing to relent on the matter briefly afterwards, he skimmed through his notes to voice out:
"Magic Circles.
The type of runecasting that creates 'Magic Circles', and in other cases enables 'Wayfinding'."

Where was this kid finding all of this knowledge? Was this truly the power of investing in books? Surely, a scholar in academia would've thrived nowadays.

[08:59] "Mhm."

He just listened to all that for a little while longer, as he thinks some more.

"So. Runecasting and Wayfinding are two things that are not that connected as you seem to think. Runecasting is casting whatever spell you want through the art of knowing how to spell it out and letting it happen. Wayfinding is the art of opening a portal to the lifestream and safely traveling through it."

"Runes are involved in wayfinding, yes. But it is now inherently a runecasting skill, if that makes sense."

"So with that, I think you should consider what you want out of this right now. Wayfinding lessons or runecasting lessons?"

[09:03] Wait -- this individual was a Wayfinding instructor? That was entirely unrealized... Or perhaps they were simply inquiring of the boy, what their ultimate intention was.

"Well, runecasting lessons." He assured, "While Wayfinding surely sounds neat 'n all? I'm here trying to bridge the gap between the casting techniques. So, starting with the one I understand the least will certainly help me with that."

There was some pause -- distracted? He turned his eye for what was playing out nearby. Surely, his brother was always pushing himself to new heights. Grasping a new magus artistry was not beyond Bayezid's expectations -- in fact, it was all the more reason to press onward in his efforts thus far. Ergo, his attention turned back for Christophore.

"So uh... Where do I start?"

[09:12] "Then no fear there. You don't need to be an artificer to learn this. I did it before I started my journey of artificery. But often it is that you learn to smith and make items first, before you take that knowledge of runes and evolve it into a casting style."

He hummed some more further, to think of how best to go about this for now.

"Right. Basics then. The world and magic is, in the broadest strokes, made out of 8 elements."

"Fire, water, earth and air. Those are very basic and I think you understand those."

"Looking further, we have the element of energy, of channeling raw ether in different ways. Of Bio, which governs over living things like blood, bone but also nature. The metaphysical, which is the element of the stuff that we cannot directly see but know it exists because we see it's effects, like illusions, time or shadows. And finaly Physical, which in the magical terms is an art of self-enhancement in a way, of physicly becoming stronger."

"There are sub-magics to each one of those, like magma magic and stuff like that, but it always falls under those 8 big ones."

"So to actually cast something with that, you want to start there. Learn how to properly write those big eight runes. And artificer can help you with this. Those are the kind of runes they throw on weapons to attune them to an element."

"I sadly don't have too much time today. So that is my step one for you for now. Learn how to properly write those. Grab some paper, bother an artificer to help you teach those runes and from there, you want to keep writing them, over and over. Until I could wake you up in the middle of the night, and you can start drawing one from memory alone."

"Got it?"

[09:12] Christophore Garijn says, "...huh. Perfect timing."
[09:12] Christophore Garijn says, "Asyi."
[09:12] Asyi asks, "... Mhm?"
[09:12] Christophore Garijn says, "This young rat here wants to learn more about runecasting. He is lacking even the basic knowledge of an artificer."
[09:13] Christophore Garijn says, "Can you go over with him a bit on the more basic elemental runes? I don't have much time right now and have to check on a few things."
[09:14] Asyi says, "... Sure."
[09:14] Christophore Garijn says, "...heard the news, have you."
[09:14] Christophore Garijn asks, "...do you need a hug?"
[09:15] Asyi says, "... no thank you, I had a..."
[09:15] Asyi says, "... bit of a mental breakdown, to be honest."
[09:15] Christophore Garijn asks, "...mhm. Just let me know if there is anything I can do for you, ok?"
[09:16] Asyi says, "The fact you're here is enough for me right now."
[09:18] Quietly he listened, and with an eager pen-in-hand he started scribbling in his notepad. Their description of magic seemed to fall in line in some aspect to the Principae Magicae -- though, some of the concepts may've gone over his head.

"Yeah -- Fire, Water, Earth and Air are Symbolic Magics, most often invoked through the heart circuit." He answered.

Then, there was Ether, Bio Magics, the metaphysical, and automancy upon the flesh. To consider that runes could even enhance that? It simply wasn't considered -- but perhaps a practice to be applied for later.
Though, the mission at-hand was understood... He had to understand the elemental runes enough to recite them with muscle memory through the penmanship of his hand.

"Got it." He'd answer, before his attention was turned to another acknowledged by the instructor.

Asyi's reflection was taken in the boy's gaze, now awaiting further instruction.

"Asyi. Bayezid." He introduced himself, "A pleasure to meet you." He flipped a page in his notebook, waiting for what would follow.

[09:19] Christophore Garijn says, "Mhm... I'm gonna check in on things for a bit and will be back later I think. Maybe. I'll see you then."
[09:19] Asyi says, "Take care, teacher."
[09:19] Christophore Garijn says, "...ah. Should probably... should have a copy of THAT laying about still. A moment actually."
[09:20] Bayezid Gazi ponders, "So, there are runes for the symbolic elements, the visionary elements and... what would the others even qualify under?"
[09:20] Bayezid Gazi ponders, "Would they qualify under any of them?"
[09:23] "Greetings, Bayezid."

The woman's voice was flat, monotone in ways that made it sound almost... Awkward, in some ways. Yet, she didn't appear to flinch at her own voice. Instead, she'd lean a little in the air, her eyes staring at the Razuka before her.

"I suppose I shall simply learn what you know, so far." The girl continued. "What do you think runes are, fundamentally? What is it that makes them so fundamentally easy to use for us artificers, and yet, oh so difficult all the same?" The girl asked, as she floated in place.

"And - don't worry if you get anything wrong. We're here to learn."

[09:24] Christophore Garijn says, "It's a copy of the book I've shown you."
[09:24] Asyi says, "... heh, I have that memorized."
[09:25] Christophore Garijn says, "Mhm. But always better to keep it on hand. Who knows. Maybe you gotta throw it at someone later in life."
[09:25] Christophore Garijn says, "Right. Be seeing you later tho."
[09:26] Asyi says, "See you."
[09:26] Christophore Garijn stumbles and falls head-first into his portal.

[09:30] The smell of food caught him off-guard, but the boy STEELED his nerve! Denki would NOT have the better of him here! He was here to learn after all!

Accepting a book from the Garijn and immediately cracking it open, he glanced up as he spoke his parting words for eyes to open agape.
Was that... A portal? A portal that the man seemingly -fell- through, vanishing him and the conjuration in tandem.

So, -that- was Wayfinding? Perhaps, it was ideal to learn that sort of magic as well!
However, he was getting himself distracted, the woman asked him a question!
"Uuuuh…"
What did she ask again?

"I- uh... Know practically nothing aside from--" He shut the book he was -just- given, "What was just told to me while you were here. There are eight magical domains, or 'elements' that I would need to learn the rune symbols for.

I know they're a language; an ancient one that was supposedly spoken by angels, and they can both be written on things to enhance them, or used in magic circles for skilled users in combat. That's it however..." His eyes marveled over the tome now.

"But with this, I suppose I'll bound to grasp even more."

[09:33] Christophore Garijn says, "Annd th eon eI aws looking for is unfindable."
[09:34] Christophore Garijn says, "...wait. One spot might still be it. "

[09:36] Christophore Garijn says, "Nope, not there either... well, let me reinsert myself into your two's teaching."
[09:39] "Correct."

The Gorgon would raise her hand into the air next to her; as a fair bit of ether magic pooled at her palm. It was then that she, gently, began to wave her palm through the air, creating a set of two runes.

[Heat] [Air] [Slow] [Gentle]

What followed was a somewhat soothing blast of warm air, of which seemed to move around the square in quite a slow and graceful manner. A lot like the warmth of a home one may wish to come back to, amidst a cold winter's day. The faintest tinge of a pleasant memory.

It was nice.

"What makes them so powerful, is that they are based on the divine language. And because of such - they are extremely malleable. For instance, the average magi can create most enchantments simply by writing out at least partial sentences with runes. For, in part, they respond to intention." The girl clarified.

She'd then lower her palm.

"The runes I just showed you are a pair of air and fire runes. These runes, on their own, produce some measure of heat, and, well, air. I then followed up with how I wish them to move, which is slowly, and gently." She'd clarify.

"... I also made sure to write 'Warmth', as opposed to fire - as writing 'fire' would have probably burned down the square." She'd smile.

"But - regardless. Runes can be used in any number of ways. From etching it into the air with your mana - to even the words in this book. Don't... Don't use the book, though. It'll ruin it." She'd snicker. "... Please, seriously, I almost did that to my own book, and it was horrific."

She'd then fold her arms.

"Are you getting all of this, so far?"

[09:52] What was this?
Raw mana oozing from the hand -- Ether being manipulated to enable to cast their digits across the air; it was an art that enabled magi to literally paint across the air as if, their canvas. By nonmagus standards, it might as well had been a divine art.

The warmth was comforting, and the act completed with such fluidity that it became clear that it was well practiced.

"Divine language, with even partial sentences providing results due to them responding to intention. That is much like the other casting techniques. Looks like most magic responds to the intent of the user.

That is useful to know."
Then, came the explanation as to what he had just beheld.
The Air and Fire runes respectively -- it made sense. She had programmed magic live, and executed it upon the world at the cost of some mana.
'Are you getting all of this, so far?'
The boy was avidly scribing down notes...

Of Air...
Of Warmth...

Then, on his thoughts -- the warnings...
"Yes-yes..." He assured, poking at his lip with the end of his pen, mulling over the possibilities of the runes alone, or even, what could've happened if he -did- use the Fire rune. Would it cast the air within the immediate proximity on fire? Would it spread in reckless abandon with his own mana as the fuel? He wasn't sure -- and quite frankly, it felt a tad bit too dangerous to toy with.

"Alright, I guess that would mean that with an understanding of the element I want to manipulate, and a property I want to imbue upon it -- I can follow through with the general intent, whether felt or directly written. Right?"

[09:58] "Sort of."

The girl once again traced runes into the air - her fingers dancing with a sense of ease and expertise. She had been practicing none stop since she'd arrived on the continent, after all. It was practically second nature to her now. And her speed was rapidly increasing as time went on, too.

Nice!

"Runes may be able to, in part, respond to both of those things - but they also become more unstable. It is like when you cast raw magic without runes. Sure, you can make the average spell by just using the basics - but you want to refine it, yes?"

The girl would then demonstrate by producing two runes.

[Water] [Drop]

… And so, water dropped from her hand onto the ground.

"Of course, this doesn't matter with more basic runes. But - for more advanced casting, you want to be able to write out more complex, and better thought out runes. For instance -"

[Water] [Flow] [Continuous] [Surrounding] [Target] [Palm]

Water then began to flow around her palm in a rather dramatic display of focus and dedication. Asyi was getting eerily good at writing these things down - though, one could only wonder where she was getting these runes from. Perhaps it was from experimentation.

Probably.

"But yes. My advice to you, right now, is to focus on the basics. You see the inscriptions in the book, yes?"

[10:00] Christophore Garijn says, "A note on that tho. You can absolutely combine symbolic and rune casting."
[10:01] Christophore Garijn says, "It's less effective, sure. But in combat for example? Combining the two in a little fashion can do quite the wonders."
[10:01] Asyi says, "You can! But, for more complex and intensive effects, it's advised that you give your mana more instructions to go off of."

[10:22] It was as though through mana and instruction -- the laws of the world were being actively rewritten! It was awe-inspiring for the boy, better grasping an understanding of the art. It surpassed the likes of the other magus casting techniques in most ways -- though, it left one to wonder:
Could it betray magus law the attunement he had believed limited most magi?

Could this art allow someone to cast with a magic foreign to their own circuitry? He couldn't be too sure -- surely he could ask but...
"Uuuuuh..." He fumbled his notebook to put it away, getting the book gifted to him out to flip it open.
"Yes, I do!" He assured, skimming his eyes to the symbols -- finding his eyes landing upon one that matched what Asyi had just briefly demonstrated.

"I can start practicing this immediately!"
Perhaps, it was the excitement he was subjecting himself to...
Perhaps, the curse of a fledgling or aspiring magus -- he wouldnever know.
Without much further delay, he started off for open grounds nearby, to practice presumably.

Though, he didn't get too far before they spoke up on a matter that truly drew upon his curiosity. He had a working theory of course -- something that he wanted to run by as many people seasoned on the matter as possible.

"Actually, -on- that matter..?" He swiveled to face the two runecasting teachers.
"I had a question concerning that... The magus casting techniques..."
The book was closed and tucked beneath his right arm, while his left dotted a finger for the duo.

"Most magi I've observed only ever practice one or two magus casting techniques, and it's usually because it's the easiest or fastest way for them to cast, or even the -only- way for them to cast a magic type of their choice." He claimed, "Which led me to think...

If I could learn -all- of the magus casting techniques... Perhaps, my magic wouldn't be any stronger than a more potent magi, but...
Would I be able to... Take advantage of the fact that each technique uses different arrays of circuitry? In theory, to cast a particular spell through one casting technique, the fashion would vary when performed through another...

So, if I managed to refine my ability... Could I manage to cast twicefold? With three, thricefold? And so on? Instead of being more potent... Perhaps, more 'efficient'? Perfecting a spell as opposed to simply being more powerful, as to enable it to surpass superior magical abilities through refinement and practice alone..?"

There was a pause, still mulling over his words and partially awaiting their answer.

"It's still a theory, but I was hoping for your input." He claimed, eyes shifting between both Asyi and Christophore now.

[10:24] "Well. In theory? You can." He shrugs once. "But that would be a great and mental toll on your mind and circuits, to use all at the same time. So I wouldn't recommend it."

"That being said? Not impossible at all. But expect to need ALOT of work on that front. Think of how you would have to write runes while also speaking your intentions, while also looking directly at your own circuits and doing who knows what as symbolic casting to all do it together."

"Hard to. But not impossible."

[10:24] "Generally, casting methods are used to amplify magic, as opposed to casting multiple sets of spells at once. But, I do believe that what you speak of is some form of fighting style. Though, I don't practice it, personally."

The girl then clasped her hands together, giving him a wide, focused smile. Perhaps a little forced, given her current feelings.

"My advice with that? Is to experiment! Mess around with casting styles, focus on combining what you've learned from me, with things you believe will amp it up. In a safe environment, of course." She nodded. "... Really, that's how most masters perfect their arts."

[10:35] "Hmm..."
They likely weren't wrong.
It'd be incredibly taxing...
The Mind. The Body. The Heart. The Throat.
These were all aspects of his body put at risk by attempting such an enigmatic theory. It was no wonder they recommended against it.

… But maybe he was different. After all, he was acknowledged for his body breaking willpower throughout his training in his earlier years. What was to say he couldn't do it again, on a magus magnitude?

What Asyi mentioned however, gave him extensive hope! Surely, there was another magi out there that figured it out! And even if they were gone? He would manage to rediscover it for sure.

"Of course...
I'll figure it out... I'll meditate on it...
I'll... I'll..." He gave it serious consideration before -- An idea!

"I'll practice just -one- spell." He claimed, "I'll practice itwith every means of magus casting..." A nod progressively proved more aggressive as he grew confident in his capability.
"Yes... I'll master a single spell first, with every casting technique known to the magi world. Then? Once I've figured it out? I'll extend from there."

But what would this spell be? Surely, it'd have to be something basic...
Something that lacked complexity but also proved replicable with relative ease. The mind wandered... And it wouldn't take too long before it settled upon something.

"Barrier Magic was mentioned before... But I'll start with something simpler... Preceding it... Defensive casting...
A simple 'Shield' technique... That'll do it."

And thus, it would begin...
The Four Trials of Magus Casting: The Ether Domain - Shield.
Once more, he swiveled his footing to start on his way eastbound with a grin from ear-to-ear.

"Who knows!" He shouted out as he started on his way, "Maybe I'll manage to invent my own casting technique!"
