Emmanuel's family history is...interesting. His great-grandfather served under Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, even reaching officer rank, during World War I, then in the King's African Rifles during World War II. His grandfather joined the police force of Tanganyika instead...until a car accident left under mysterious circumstances. The grandfather, dismayed by the ethnic repression beginning in Tanzania and suddenly affluent by the Federal German Republic's backpay from his soldier's days decided that he was seeking greener pastures and brought his pregnant daughter-in-law to Germany proper, reasoning that he'd rather live in a place which had done bad things and tried to make amends than a place which looked like it was going down the road.
Emmanuel's father was born on German soil a few months later, becoming a successful plumber master
(translators note: Master is the highest grade of German craftmanship, allowed to take apprentices and generally the blue collar equivalent of a university degree.) and having a son of his own.
Said son, Emmanuel, decided he was interested in policework and - in light of the refugee situation - the German Bundeskriminalamt (German FBI *notes*) was interested in raising the diversity of its investigative agents. So he joined up and was promptly sent to University for the required additional education. And one day there, he decided to attend the same party as a certain blonde german wizard...
