  2. The Politics of Children’s Literature
  3. By: Herbert Kohl
  4.
  5. 1.The article “The Politics of literature” by Herbert Kohl is about fixing the mistakes in popular children’s books, in this case “Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott”. Herbert Kohl breaks down the children’s story to add revisions and make it more historically accurate. An example would be how the children’s story says,”Rosa Parks was a poor, tired seamstress.”.The way that they portrayed Rosa Parks was inaccurate, instead Rosa Parks was a proud member of the NAACP and the WPC with a full-time job. Another example from the text is that,”Rosa was tired and sat down in the front of the bus(White section).”,which is also incorrect. Rosa Parks sat in the back(Black Section) and refused to give up her seat to a white male when the bus was crowded. In Conclusion, the author wants to show how historically inaccurate children’s books are in showing the hardships African Americans had to face with the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

  7. a.Rosa Parks was a proud member of the NAACP and wasn’t a poor seamstress
  8. b.The NAACP knew that Rosa Park wouldn’t cave under pressure and could trust her to stay strong throughout the Situation
  9. c.The article emphasized that it wasn’t just Rosa Parks fighting in the boycott but also the entire Black Community
  10. 3. I learned, the police that approached Rosa Parks could have just evicted her and not arrest her. Rosa Parks said in the book,”Voices of freedom ”that,”See, if I had just been evicted from the bus and he hadn’t placed me under arrest or had any charges brought against me, it probably could have been just another incident.”Which means that everything could have been different if that officer made a different decision.
  11. 4. This document was written by Herbert Kohl to show how children’s books are very historically inaccurate in showing the kids how bad the segregation was and the struggles African Americans had to face in the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
  12. 5.This document can be used a a form of historical evidence because it’s explaining how children’s books are flawed with their information and is correcting them.
  13. 6.Yes, the document has two photos, one where they are showing how African Americans got to work without buses. And, the second one is Rosa Parks holding a sign up fighting for the anti-apartheid demonstration.
