  2. [08:42] <Earthflame> Tazzari is sitting quietly with a view of the ruins, looking thoughtful and not noticing Altea approaching...
  3. 01[08:43] <Altea> "Hey Tazzari! Whatcha doing?"
  4. [08:43] <Earthflame> "Oh- Altea?" She turns, giving her a smile. "Just doing some thinking... You?"
  5. 01[08:43] <Altea> "Looking for you! What are you thinking about?"
  6. [08:45] <Earthflame> "A lot of things... Where we are now, what we're doing, how we got here..." She shakes her head a little. "...Getting distracted."
  7. 06[08:45] * Altea sits down next to her. "Want to talk about it? I've noticed you've seemed like you're off your game a bit since the LT showed up."
  8. [08:48] <Earthflame> "I... I don't know." She looks up again, at the blue sky. "...Trying to help those kids was all I cared about. And... I didn't want to do it the proper way. I could have put you all in danger. But... I'm still not sure I was all wrong."
  9. 06[08:48] * Altea nods. "So you're not sure how you feel about all this then?"
  10. [08:50] <Earthflame> She nods... Giving Altea an odd smile. "Wondering if I'm really cut out for the TSAB... You, Claire, the LT, you're all perfect for it... Sincere, direct and honest. When something needs to be done, you do it large, and have all the strength to back it up. Me..." She sighs, shaking her head.

  12. [08:53] <Earthflame> "...If the enemy is hiding in the shadows, why not use those shadows to stab them in the back? A limited group operating in secrecy... But that sort of knives in the dark work is for people like Mneme or Aynfean... Yet I acted just like them, because I thought it was right."

  14. [08:56] <Earthflame> "Aynfean gave me the information... But the approach was my idea. Keeping it small and quiet, not escalating it..." She sighs. "But now it's escalated. We have multiple warships due to be in system and it looks to be an all out battle... The LT is probably right, that I was thinking too small scale, that I should have reached out more... But I can't stop wondering if I could have done it. If

  16. 01[08:56] <Altea> "Well, what did she say? My dad taught me this thing a while back that how you say thigs can change how people react to them."

  19. 01[08:57] <Altea> "Aynfean."

  21. [09:00] <Earthflame> "...Oh." She looks down again. "...Not much. She gave me the information, the pictures, and told me it was real. I... I knew she was probably manipulating me. But the picture was one I built for myself. That we knew Caledfwlch had eyes in the TSAB, that approaching it openly would put the victims in danger and make saving them more difficult... Although she didn't disagree with the assessment."
  22. 01[09:01] <Altea> "And you think you would have come up with the same answer if the LT had told you about this instead?"
  23. [09:03] <Earthflame> "Maybe. Although if the LT was telling me, we'd already be doing it loud. Once things have started that way, it's almost impossible to dial it back down."
  24. 01[09:05] <Altea> "Alright. I just wonder cause we know that people like Aynfean and Mneme have tried to trick you into doing things before."
  25. [09:06] <Earthflame> She chuckles at that. "I know... And you're right. She was manipulating me. But... The Giantblooded are protectors of your world and your people, right?"
  26. 06[09:07] * Altea nods. "Yep!"
  27. [09:08] <Earthflame> "It's like if... If someone you cared about was in danger. And you knew it was a trap, that they were using it to bait you... But you'd go anyway, wouldn't you? Because that's who you are. If you didn't try to help... You wouldn't be the same person anymore."
  28. 01[09:10] <Altea> "Yep! Though incidentally that's what the LT talked to me about after we first got here. I'm working on learning to do that smarter instead of just rushing in. I'm starting to learn chess now!

  30. [09:12] <Earthflame> "I noticed." Tazzari gives her a smile. "But... No matter what you learn, it's in your nature to Go. You might figure out a better way to do it, but... You're strong. You can do things the direct, honest way and still make it work."

  32. [09:17] <Earthflame> She nods again. "...My instincts are different. Why make it a fight if you can win before the enemy even knows there's a battle? But that's the same methodology Section 31 use... And the Special Situations Subsection. When it really mattered, I acted more like Aynfean and Mneme than a proper member of the TSAB. And...   36. 01[09:20] <Altea> "It's okay. Remember, we're still just students. It would be weird if we were perfect."
  37. [09:20] <Earthflame> "...I'm not even being a good student. My teacher told me I was wrong, but I'm still doubting her..."
  38. 01[09:21] <Altea> "I think that still falls under 'not perfect' though."
  39. 01[09:22] <Altea> "And honestly, the fact that those organizations exist mean you're not the only person who feels that way."
  40. [09:22] <Earthflame> "...But they're our enemies. Me thinking that way is a bad thing. But I still do it."
  41. 01[09:25] <Altea> "Hm, okay, I think I get it. Maybe this is about your dad? I remember you talking like this after that time you cut off Eris's arm."
  42. [09:28] <Earthflame> She nods, biting her lip. "Kinda... It's why I started working with my sister Dieci, to use what I was built for for good... But sometimes doing good in the long run doesn't mean acting like a good person now. I... I understand what the LT is doing, and I think I understand why Claire went to her... Wanting to do this all the right, proper way. But why can't I just accept that? I don't know..."
  43. 01[09:30] <Altea> "Hm, that's tricky, I'm not sure. But I do know that no matter what, you're a good person who wanted to help people."
  44. 01[09:30] <Altea> "So maybe focus on why you choose how you do things, rather than whether your methods make you good or not."
  45. [09:31] <Earthflame> "...Thank you." Tazzari hugs her tight again. "You're a really good friend, Altea."
  46. 01[09:32] <Altea> "Glad I could help." She hugs back.
  47. 01[09:32] <Altea> "Oh, by the way, do you know anything I can read to help me learn about chess?"
  48. [09:33] <Earthflame> "I have some stuff written on it... But I could do some tutoring for you, if you like?"
  49. 01[09:35] <Altea> "Sure! I managed to beat the first computer once, so now I'm trying to learn to do it every time before I move on. I also think that the next level is gonna need more than me just beating my head against it too."
  50. [09:37] <Earthflame> She nods. "Let me guess... Your favourite pieces are the Rooks and the Queen, right?"
  51. 01[09:37] <Altea> "The queen, yes. She can do everything! Except the weird L shape that the horse does."
  52. [09:39] <Earthflame> "She's a direct, powerful piece... But that's why it's important to not use her carelessly. If you rely on her too much, you'll end up losing her and being unable to cope."
  53. 06[09:43] * Altea nods. "Yeah, I lose her a lot."
  54. [09:47] <Earthflame> "It's why the other pieces matter. They might all be weaker than her, but used as a whole they're so much stronger. Making every piece useful, leveraging their strengths... That's the key. Even a pawn can win a match for you, if you use it right."
  55. 06[09:47] * Altea nods. "By turning it into a queen, right?"
  56. [09:48] <Earthflame> She shakes her head. "On their own. They're slow and they're limited in what they can take... But that makes them easy to forget, or ignore. You might dismiss them or not consider them a threat, but then..." She pauses, giving Altea a soft smile. "How many times have you lost your Queen to a pawn, so far?"
  57. 01[09:49] <Altea> "Um, let's see, I've played 57 games, and..." She pulls up a screen on her device. "31."
  58. [09:50] <Earthflame> "And let me take another guess... You've never managed to take the enemy Queen with one of your own pawns?"
  59. 01[09:51] <Altea> "Nope!"
  60. [09:52] <Earthflame> "Try it. Not to the detriment of the rest of the game, but... If you learn to take the enemies strongest piece with one of your weakest ones, I think you'll have come a long way in figuring out the game."
  61. 06[09:56] * Altea nods. "Alright, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks a lot Tazzari!"
  62. [09:57] <Earthflame> "You're welcome, Altea. Good luck!"
  63. 06[09:59] * Altea goes off to go back to her chess program.
