  13. As with all things relating to the 20th legion, their origins are shrouded in mystery. Dozens of theories have emerged as to their origin; A Special detachment ordered by the primarch(s) himself(themselves), genuinely loyal members of the Alpha Legion at odds with their gene-brothers and father(s). What is known about them is sparse, but sheds some light on their supposed purpose. Their first recorded appearance was several weeks into the Istvaan V campaign, where seemingly rogue elements of the Alpha legion with insignia of a reptilian eye in place of standard iconography were seen turning on fellow traitor forces from the Night lords during a firefight with Imperial Fists forces. The confusion caused by the sudden shift in the fight allowed the surviving fists to retreat, leaving the infighting group to their fate. Over the next few months, several more sightings of the breakoff astartes were recorded, however how they managed to get off world is completely unknown.
  14.
  15. In recent times, forces baring the icon of the Hydra's Eye have been sighted sparsely, assisting loyalist forces, or seemingly more insidiously, "requisitioning" elements of planetary PDF forces, leaving some worlds with under strength mortal forces. In some cases, this has led to stalls in campaigns as strategically important worlds must be re-garrisoned with forces of the Imperial Army to prevent their fall to traitor forces. Occasionally, it has been noted that these forces neglect engaging traitor forces in favor of wiping out xenos, though why this is done is of course a total mystery.
  16.
  17. In truth, the Blackshields of the Oculi Hydrae were indeed granted autonomy on the orders of Alpharius, though it was coincidence that their leader happened to have loyalist leanings. The primarch merely warned him that going against their legion would very well result in their annihilation or reintegration; a prominent reason the Oculi Hydrae rarely engage Alpha Legion forces. The Hydrae make up for a lack in Astartes with many, well trained and disciplined mortal forces, leaving their marine forces to be used as the scalpel, eliminating command groups and sabotaging enemy positions before baseline human forces engage.
