  10. Main Plot Ideas
  11.
  12. Book 1: In a story that introduces readers to Michael's world, Michael finds out about a local group of teenagers looking to summon a "god" through a group ritual. Things take a turn when he realizes that the person leading them is someone he's familiar with.
  13. Book 2: Michael gets a call from his friend Ashley asking him to help her with something. Upon arriving at her apartment, he learns that she's being harassed by an old boyfriend-turned-stalker and wants him around for protection. Seems like an easy enough job, at least at first. But then he meets the man for himself, and realizes right away that his crazed, abnormal obsession isn't the only thing driving him anymore...
  14. Book 3: Someone or something (it turns out to be a vengeful wraith) is killing junkies and drug dealers in Oakland. Michael has to find and stop this killer before it comes after him. Michael's knowledge of drugs, dealers, dope dens and how the Upstairs and Downstairs manipulate energy left behind by the dead are all expounded upon.
  15. Book 4: Rumors have spread that one of the locals in Michael's neighborhood has started acting strangely. People in the neighborhood are convinced that he's on drugs, but Michael believes that something else is at play. At the end of this book, [spoiler] Michael realizes that there has been too much human-centric Downstairs activity in the city (along with far too many new people discovering the Downstairs in particular) for the events of the first four books to be a coincidence. Shortly after this revelation, one of the teenagers from Book 1 reappears and begs him to take her in.

  27. Book 5 (The Monster in the Mirror): Soon after taking the girl in, Michael's residence is inhabited by a monster from "in-between", originating from one of the spaces between the levels of the Downstairs. Manifesting through each housemate's reflection, its presence forces Michael to figure out which between-space it comes from and neutralize it on its own plane of existence.
  28. Book 6: Begins the "captive arc" where Michael is depowered and then captured.
  29. Book 7: Continues that arc with Michael being held captive.
