- About the Village- In this culture here are some characteristics:
- Smiling is polite as is indirect eye contact. Direct Eye-contact means equal status between the two people. Folding arms in front of themselves when they talk is seen as polite.
- If they do not know an answer they will say no. It is seen as more modest.
- Going into a room or kitchen is impolite unless invited. Taking off shoes before entering a hut is custom.
- Men and Women wear sarongs and tunics. Unmarried women will wear white, and the others more colorful dyed cotton fabrics.
- In this culture they tend to use nicknames. Now having learned English some English nicknames will be used for convenience.*
- There are little animals a Karen will not eat, they hunt and eat Rice, insects, curry, and so on. They eat with their right hands and not with utensils. Meals are eaten together and family is important. Curries and soups will be shared. There are some food taboos such as no eating papaya unless you are willing to risk Malaria.
- Homosexuality is seen as ok in the tribe. (Aka. Elif and Loren will not be unwelcome, and treated normally and accepted)
- Love is seen as important between partners.
- The family line passes through the female. Males are also expected to help raise children. Children are free to run around the village with no worries, the village will help raise the child and watch out for them.
- Hugging and kissing a Karen person is looked down upon unless it is a baby. Shaking hands is a good thing and they will support their right arm with the left arm using their right hand to shake. However, among themselves they do not often shake hands or bow.
- Losing your temper in front of them is also a good way to lose respect. They have a cultural value of not imposing on others, and being quiet and less talkative.
- Elders are respected as teachers and leaders. Village elders will know traditional medicine. They will not question a doctor or a person of higher status.
