  1. “It's time for bed, you guys.”
  2. >Oh, they hate this part.
  3. >They know you're going home for the night.
  4. >They know they will be alone.
  5. >Starlight takes this the hardest of all, so she goes into her cage first.
  6. >”Nuuuuu, no weave 'gain! Stawigh' no wike wonwey!”
  7. >You make sure she's got her little blue stuffed bunny rabbit before setting her inside.
  8. “I'll be back tomorrow, it's okay.”
  9. >Nimbus goes in next. She's sad, but resigned to the whole process.
  10. >Strawberry, one of the red earth ponies, comes after Nimbus.
  11. >She likes to have a ball with her to nose around, in case she wakes up.
  12. >Felix goes in his cage after Strawberry.
  13. >”Fewiss miss nice hooman...”
  14. >You tousle his mane a bit.
  15. >Athena, a dusty grey pegasus mare, is next.
  16. >She likes to have a little bowl of grain to snack on overnight.
  17. >Zeus, a big yellow unicorn, wants a hug before he goes in, not unlike most of the other fluffies.
  18. >He goes, crying, into the cage next to Athena.
  19. >They came from the same house, and are inseparable.
  20. >Mandy gets pooped before he goes into the cage.
  21. >You have to squeeze him firmly, and he always lets out a heartbreaking squeak because he didn't develop enough to know the word 'owwies'.
  22. >You linger a bit on the thought of putting him down.
  23. >He'll never be normal.
  24. >What kind of existence are you giving him?
  25. >You dismiss it. Every fluffy deserves a chance...right?
  26. >Grab a tissue, move on.
  27. >A young peach earth fluffy mare named Mango is hiding behind Slate.
  28. >She's not really scared of being alone, she's nervous because so many of the others are.
  29. >”Why fwiends scawed?” she asks.
  30. “They're okay.”
  31. >Fluffy, a plum-colored unicorn mare, is next to be put up.
  32. >Yes, her name is Fluffy. She was reset so many times, a given name won't stick anymore.
  33. >A patch of her forehead is bare; the skin is too scarred to let fluff grow.
  34. >Nutmeg is next, a rich brown earth fluffy with a great personality.
  35. >Until it gets dark, when she freaks the absolute hell out.
  36. >Her owner would leave her in an unlit room for days on end as punishment.
  37. >Get another tissue.
  38. >You continue putting them into cages, giving out hugs and assurances that you'll be back tomorrow.
  39. >The king and queen of your herd, Slate and Flame, go in last.
  40. >”See nice hooman when shiny come 'gain. Fwuffies be good, ge' sweepies.”
  41. >Big hug for Slate. It must kill him to see you leave every night, but he never shows it.
  42. >He is always strong for his herd.
  43. >Flame is still jittery about the fluffy 'munsta'.
  44. >If you had been thrown out and replaced by one, you would be too.
  45. >All the fluffies are in their cages.
  46. >You step back and look.
  47. >Starlight begs you to take her home.
  48. >Flame is trying to hide in her blanket.
  49. >Athena and Zeus wail about being apart.
  50. >Mandy is stuck on his back, unable to get in his bed. His little legs flail wildly.
  51. >No actual words come from his mouth, just a fearful “Woooohaaa! Wuffa hoogie wibba!”
  52. >You open the door and put him in his bed.
  53. >One more look around.
  54. >Fluffy stares blankly into space.
  55. >Nutmeg is sobbing, begging the 'scawy dawk' to go away.
  56. >All the worst that humanity has to offer, in convenient fluffy packages.
  57. >Your soul gets crushed just a little bit more.
  58. >Push it aside. Gotta smile for the nightly speech!
  59. “Okay, be good fluffies until I get back tomorrow!”
  60. >”No weeeeeeeeeeave!” Starlight sobs.
  61. “I'll be back, Starlight, don't cry.”
  62. >”Stawigh' sowwy, pwease no weave, no wan' wonwey!”
  63. >Another tissue.
  64. >You'd take them all home in a heartbeat...if your apartment allowed pets.
  65. “Be strong. I'll be back, I promise.”
  66. >Lots of sniffling and sad faces.
  67. >It's not going to get any easier, so you grab your keys and lock up.
  68. >One last wave through the windows before you drive off.
  69. >...and a big sigh.
  70. ------
  71. >Something is wrong.
  72. >Wake up!
  73. >You startle to consciousness, shaking your head until your grey mane is out of your eyes.
  74. >Something doesn't smell pretty.
  75. >You check your blue fluff to see if you made bad poopies.
  76. >Wasn't you, so you start looking around.
  77. >The smell is coming from the cage next door...which is Flame's.
  78. “Fwame, why make bad poopies?”
  79. >She is utterly terrified, having crammed herself in the farthest corner of her cage.
  80. >”Fwuffy munsta hewe, see munsta, nice hooman no wuv Fwame anymo'...”
  81. >You enter alert mode, standing up and looking around for the enemy.
  82. >You don't see anything, however.
  83. “Swate no see munsta. No be scawed.”
  84. >Flame isn't listening. She's staring at a shadow on the far wall, made by the night shinies outside.
  85. >”Pwease wuv Fwame, Fwame is good fwuffy, no haf babehs anymo'...”
  86. >You're confused about Flame's behavior.
  87. “Swate no see munsta, no be scawed. Ge' sweepies.”
  88. >All the other fluffies around you are doing that. They wouldn't be if a monster were really here.
  89. >The shadow moves because a vroom box comes by.
  90. >It doesn't scare you, but Flame hides and whimpers. She also makes more bad poopies.
  91. “Fwame, no be scawed!”
  92. >”Fwame sowwy, Fwame sowwy, no mean make bad poopies, no mean be bad fwuffy, pwease wuv,” she sniffles.
  93. “Fwame no bad fwuffy...”
  94. >She's not listening, and you're really sleepy.
  95. >Your eyes close, even though you're worried.
  96. >Flame will be okay, she's a smart fluffy like you. She'll understand that a monster isn't really here.
  97. >Time for sleepies.
  98. >The next time your eyes open, the big shiny thing is back. Everything is bright. All the shadows are gone.
  99. >You nod approvingly.
  100. >As usual, you are the first fluffy to wake up.
  101. >You turn to Flame's cage.
  102. “See, no muns-”
  103. >Flame is looking right at you, but something is wrong with her eyes.
  104. >She looks bad. You can't really express it, but the way she's lying on her side terrifies you.
  105. >Bad poopies fill her cage.
  106. “Fw-fwame? Fwame sweepin'? Fwame no feew good?”
  107. >It takes you ages to attach a word to what you see.
  108. >When the meaning strikes, you feel weak and wobbly and scared.
  109. >Flame is dead. This is death.
  110. >You begin pounding on your cage door weakly.
  111. >Your voice is barely above a wheeze.
  112. “Pwease hewp Fwame, Fwame nee' huggies, Fwame nee' nice hooman...”
  113. >An eternity passes before you finally see nice human's vroom box arrive.
  114. >She'll fix Flame. She can fix everything.
  115. ------
  116. >You arrive bright and early, ready to...
  117. >You're stopped cold when you get to the door.
  118. >You see Slate scratching at his cage door frantically.
  119. >Flame's cage is full of crap, and she looks kinda...
  120. >Oh no.
  121. >You quickly walk in, waving the smell away from your nose.
  122. >Gotta be quiet, can't let any of the others see this.
  123. >”Pwease hewp Fwame, Fwame haf owwies, Fwame nee' huggies,” Slate whimpers.
  124. >She's beyond hugging now.
  125. “Slate, what happened?”
  126. >”Say see fwuffy munsta, scawed, make scawed poopies, no wissen Swate when say no munsta...”
  127. >She terrified herself to death, thinking she saw an alicorn.
  128. >Damn it!
  129. >You very quietly remove the body and clean out the cage.
  130. >Just as you get done, the others begin waking up.
  131. >You go about the breakfast routine and put everyone in the big play pen.
  132. >It only hits them then.
  133. >Nimbus blinks, looking around. ”Whewe fwiend Fwame? Why Swate cwy?”
  134. >Starlight blinks, waddling around the pen. “Fwame! Fwame nee' nummies! Whewe is?”
  135. >After half an hour, she cries for you. “Mommy, no wike dis game! Wan' fwiend back!”
  136. >You really don't know what to tell them.
  137. >The tears probably tell the story well enough, anyway.
