Captain Dusty Bennett, birdperson female: An officer in the Union's army who longs for the days when she was out on the field, perhaps the first birdperson to achieve a commission. Known for outrageous maneuvers and expressing her respect to the enemy. Secretly, she has a wasting illness which will take her from active duty sooner rather than later, and that's why she's so daring on the field today.

Ted Wright, human male: A police officer in the Confederacy, gruff and terse, but he has a daughter he adores. Very principled, unpopular amongst his coworkers for selling out his corrupt partner to the proper authorities. Still, he's reasonable for a cop, and dislikes chasing down rowdy kids, so he only feeds the Centrion information on troublemakers when they ask. He's going to retire soon, so of course something awful is going to happen.

Akane Inochi, human female: A sadistic Confederate noblewoman, proud of her heritage. She owns and operates a starship deep in the borders of space, where her terrible word is law. (No one else wanted her, you see.) Her operatives are paid well, and fear her wrath should they defect. A known quantity in the underworld, but she crows about human supremacy, doesn't disturb the Confederacy too much, and has influential parents, so at least one side isn't that motivated to apprehend her.

Shiko Mori, NE human female: A first-gen Martian Project experiment who has come under the power of an underworld mob. Her ability to push herself to superhuman limits is truncated by tendencies to faint and heavy dissociation, so she's rarely seen on the field without her boss-come-partner, Tatsuya Sudou, whom she harbours secret feelings for. She doesn't have long to live, but she still pushes herself for the sake of the people who took her in.

Holi Bumah, GE human male: A loose cannon who took his research and fled the Confederacy when it became clear he wouldn't be able to continue his work due to ethical concerns. He's since hidden himself away on a border planet, and has gone so far as to experiment on himself, alongside kidnapped subjects. Marley Loon is his current stable project, but he's always looking for a wider experimentation pool.

Marley Loon, GE human? female: A twelve year old child who was engineered from the time Holi kidnapped her pregnant mother. Alongside ratlike features and other extrahuman traits, she shows distressing telekinetic ability, which may partly be owed to her mysterious parentage. She looks up to Holi as a father and helps him with his work - girl really needs some better role models.

Vera, human female: A woman trapped in a temporal loop deep in space. As the only woman with continuous knowledge of the many years which have passed, she has tried everything in her power to stop it and bring her people peace. Hundreds of loops have altered her speech patterns and mannerisms.

Shannon Cadoc, human male: A priest who uses his position to cover for illicit activities, including swindling, smuggling, and stealing. A known quantity in the underworld, he nevertheless uses his position to fool decent folk. He hasn't been excommunicated because he holds an important secret about the priesthood. But underneath all his grime and lechery, he's secretly... still a grimy lech, but one who puts on a facade of having a heart of gold.

Anne Cruiser, human female: Sheriff of Dulcimer's Bluff, on one of the border planets. She's concerned with keeping order in her town, and making sure it doesn't starve; sometimes that means dealing with people who work outside of the law, and she's been known to buy survival items even if they fell off the back of a truck. She has excellent fashion sense for someone living on the edge.

Zu, catperson female: A crafty weapons supplier who services all kinds of clients. Don't try to steal from her, because you'll definitely regret it. Apparently she's a retired terrorist... and an old bounty hunter... and a demolitions expert overseeing mining efforts... and a criminal who had to go underground to avoid retribution... there are a lot of stories about her.

Camilla Ruth and Denise Dellatrey, birdperson/human females: Wives who run the outrageously delicious Jewel Beetle Cafe, situated on a remote spacestation. They have pretty good humour about serving lowlifes, but if anyone starts trouble, they'll happily throw them out at gunpoint. Camilla has a spined rabbit for a pet - she bites. Denise used to be an actress, and occasionally still gets recognised, but she maintains that she's done with the life of stardom.

Nogitsunes One, Two, Four to Nine: A group of creatures which have ascended the need for physical form, and now travel as energy, manifesting illusions to interact with the material world. Lower beings sometimes fascinate them, causing those poor people to be followed by what are, essentially, spirits. Electricity, lasers, and other such things can at least cause them annoyance when used, though it doesn't seem possible to kill them with current technology. The lower their number, the younger they act - One and Two can even be dismissed simply with a stern tone. There is another, called Kitsune Three, who shows up to help when the others meddle too long; he's a very mature teenager.
