there's 6 million dead fucking bodies down there, which really isn't great just in general for the spiritual aura of the place????

HOWEVER! if you're undead, it's completely normal and nice. all the ghosts there are just fervently afraid of the living, and as a result lash out quite frequently. if you're a ghost, it's not bad- a little creepy maybe because some of the ghosts down there are stuck in loops of doing the same thing over and over, but otherwise it's almost downright civilized down there.
mostly the fear is because of multiple attempts to exorcise the place, as well as the presence of that dickbag hastur on the surface.

interestingly? the deeper you go the more coherent the ghosts tend to be- you're "closer" to the afterlife, and so they're more easily to think and speak and hold themselves together. it's near the surface where things are bad.
at the deepest point of the catacombs, there ARE actually a few living people, but they're all a bit..... off? they eat lots of mushrooms and gather moisture off the walls and whatnot. but they're otherwise pretty normal.
