ST:　While battleships are normally separated by expressions such as warships, boats, ships, and so on, the former marine forces of Japan used the following methods to do so. 「軍艦の艦種には『艦』『艇』『船』などの表現が用いされるが、旧日本海軍における規定では次のように定められていた。」
ST:　Warships (Kansen):  Any vessels registered with the navy forces.       Military Vessel (Kantei): Any vessels meant for battle. ST:　Among them, those that can more narrowly be defined as warships would be battleships, practice battleships, aircraft carriers, cruisers, practice cruisers, submarine carriers, construction vessels, gunboats, and seaplane carriers. Any other vessels, such as destroyers or submarines were not seen as warships. Simply put, while the destroyer was indeed used by the navy as a military fleet, it was never quite treated like an actual warship. ST:　Battleships are equipped with plenty of high-calibre artillery, and are mainly charged with utilising their immense firepower to break through enemy defence. On account of their role, wherein they are to encounter the enemy capital ship and engage it in bombardment, they are also priorly equipped with enough defences to withstand firepower equal to their own.  「戦艦とは大口径の火砲を多数搭載し、その強力な火力と防御力により敵艦船の撃滅を重な任務とした艦種である。あまたその「敵主力艦と撃ち合う」という役割のため、自己の主砲弾と同等の砲弾が命中しても耐えられるだけの装甲を有することが前提とされていた・」
ST:　For that reason, battleships continued to evolve in structure as as needed, and until World War II, they were considered the greatest vessel in the military arsenal, barring the large aircraft carriers. ST:　But while battleships were indeed a navy forces main outlet of power, their construction and maintenance cost enormous sums of money. Therefore, they were considered to be a sort of luxury item that only the more powerful countries could possess. 「また、戦艦は海軍の主力とされながらも、建造と維持に莫大な費用がかかる事から強国のみが持てる贅沢品ともいえた。」
ST:　But upon the dawn of World War II, and the consequential immigration of battle strategies to include airborne methods, the battleship began to lose worth as a viable strategic implementation. With the end of World War II and the use of missiles, then a relatively new military arsenal, as a replacement for ship guns, battleships became a thing of the past. Presently, there is no country that utilises these types of ships as their main method of offence. 「しかし、第二次世界大戦中に海軍兵力の主力が航空機と空母へと変化したため、戦艦はその戦略・戦術的価値を大きく減じることになる。更に第二次世界大戦が終わると、新兵器であるミサイルが艦砲に代わる役割を果たすようになる、戦艦は過去の存在となった。現在この艦種を現有戦力として保有する国は存在しない。」

ST:　A carrier, officially named an aircraft carrier, possessed a flight deck which allowed the arrival and departure of aeroplanes. There, the maintenance, fuelling, and loading preparations were conducted, and it was entirely possible for it, given its position above water, to continue with air battles at its own pace. 「空母とは正式には航空母艦と呼ばれ、飛行甲板を持ち、航空機の離艦・着艦が可能で、航空機に対する整備、燃料や弾薬の補給が行え、海上において単独で航空戦を継続する能力を持つ軍艦をいう。」
ST:　The aircraft carrier was developed alongside aeroplanes. By the time World War II had come about, battleships had begun to fade away. However, considering the places that were out of reach even for long-range bombardment, and with the obvious benefit aircraft carriers provided in that regard, it was not long before they had taken the place of battleships in terms of status and importance. Much unlike battleships, however, aircraft carriers were hardly suited for direct bombardment combat with enemy fleets. Instead, the main focus was directed towards implementing an effective defence.  「元々空母は航空機の発達に伴い生まれた艦種で、第二次世界大戦開戦時は戦艦の陰に隠れた存在であったが、大砲の届かない遠方にいる敵を攻撃するのに航空機が有効なことが分かると、短期間で戦艦の地位を覆す重要な存在となった。また空母は基本的には戦艦と違い、敵艦と直接撃ち合うことを想定しておらず、装甲の厚さによる防御力重視していない。」

ST:　And that’s the story of the aircraft carrier that took the place of battleships for many countries once World War II had come to an end, becoming the main power of all naval military ventures. 「第二次世界大戦が終わった後、戦艦に代わり各国海軍の主力となったはこの空母であった。」
ST:　Furthermore, in contrast to battleships, aircraft carriers offered a variety of options for construction. From the beginning, those that were constructed as carriers or large warships (battleships or transport ships) were stripped of their armaments and modified to be aircraft carriers.
