- This is version 2 of my Pit Fighter Martial Archetype. Again, this is my first homebrew; I apologize for any balance issues that may be present. Of course, all feedback is encouraged and appreciated. I plan to start playtesting this version soon, so any feedback is very much appreciated.
- The Pit Fighter is a Fighter Martial Archetype designed to bring the feel of a gladiator in an arena, a brawler in a back alley, or a thug in a crowded tavern. You fight quick and brutal, utilizing a mix of weapons and fists, and you excel at breaking the rules just as easily as you break bone. It's about survival, not chivalry. The Pit Fighter adds a suite of brawling maneuvers straight out of street fighting and professional wrestling, and also incentivizes Fighter players to use unarmed weapons over the standard greatsword or greataxe.
- **"Why isn't this just Battlemaster?"** To power these maneuvers, the Pit Fighter has a unique resource: Grit Dice. What makes these Grit Dice different from the Battlemaster's Superiority Dice is that you start with zero, and gain one at the start of every turn (up to a cap). You can then discharge these Grit Dice to execute your fighting moves, which allows for the Pit Fighter player to make the trade-off between using low-cost, low-impact moves (such as gaining a small amount of temporary hit points for the cost of only one Grit Die) or using flashy, dramatic moves (like grabbing two enemies' heads and bashing them together to damage and stun them both, discharging at minimum three Grit Dice). The player can also put as many Grit Dice into a fighting move as they would like. Because of these key differences, the Battlemaster is much more about battlefield tactics and cerebral play, bringing a frontloaded suite of maneuvers to the field that they may execute as they see fit; while the Pit Fighter wants to get into the thick of the fight and unleash powerful bursts of damage and crowd control, gated behind the Grit Dice's slow "charging" mechanic. It's also worth noting that the Grit Die is smaller than the Superiority Die.
- Additionally, in keeping with the theme of a gritty brawler, the Pit Fighter's scrappiness and grit are always reliable, even when the chips are down-- because the Pit Fighter's Grit Dice recharge in combat and are not tied to a short or long rest, the Pit Fighter increases in relative strength as the adventuring day goes on. While other classes are running dry on frontloaded resources-- Ki, spell slots, etc-- the Pit Fighter's Grit Dice will always be there.
- Anyways, [here is the Pit Fighter.](https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-M4exzGSJRsWdHnFJA4w)

- **Feedback Request:** I have one specific question that I would like feedback on. I am currently trying to tweak the Grit dice mechanic to keep fighting moves from falling behind Battlemaster because of the small dice size and Grit's limited recharge. So-- Do you think I should make the dice bigger? Or, should I make it so that taking damage gives Grit Dice in addition to one at the start of every turn?
- Thanks!
