- Homework: find information about the University of Virginia, and write one reason to go there and one reason to avoid it
- ---
- Pros: good university, recognized around the world, ranked #3 best public university
- One of the few schools that has an international dentistry program
- 94 TOEFL requirement
- Cons: requires both NBDE 1 and 2 exams (most colleges only require 1) [for the dental program)
- (This is a dealbreaker for Jenefer, meaning she won’t apply to Virginia for this reason.)
- highly selective = hard to get in
- still very expensive for international students (out-of-state students pay 3 times as much as VA students)

- In general, when looking for a university, important things to consider:
- - price: $44,000 for out-of-state students
- - location (what other things are nearby? how much does it cost to live there?)
- - application requirements (including required test scores)
- - reputation (especially for getting a job)
- (Many schools report a job-finding rate for graduates. USE CRITICAL THINKING when you consider this number, because it might be misleading or exaggerated.)
- - available scholarships
- - variety of courses offered (especially for an undergraduate program = your first 4 years)
- ---
- As a group, find similarities between these pairs of things:
- cheesecake / boyfriends
- chickens / the Super Bowl
- leather / machine guns
- soy sauce / Darth Vader
- ---
- scare quotes:
- I really don’t care about “romantic” gifts like flowers or chocolates.
- - Many people say these things are romantic, but I don’t agree.
