- Black Hat and White Hat SEO tactics have developed into a classic quarrel of good vs evil. There is no absolute decision that states which tactic is better, they both have there own powerful advantages. White Hat is more commonly used by SEO webmaster of all levels. Black Hat has its advantages if its used correctly, but the overall penalties for using those strategies sometimes outweighs the positive affects.
- White Hat SEO
- The legitimate practice of search engine optimization which reflect the guidelines Google has set. Webmasters who are nice and play by the rules are considered "Whitehats", which gain a valuable reputation among the online community over time through various social media and bookmarking outlets. Most of these are fairly common and used by everyone, Digg, Reddit, Twitter, etc. Whitehats also utilize guest post blogging, commenting, and forum posts, to regularly promote their websites. I left directory submission out because most of the free directories are spammed and provide low quality backlinks. Paid directories are still considered What Hat but its not something anyone can do when they feel like it.
- Black Hat SEO
- Search Engines deplore the Black Hat communities and its practices. Blackhats commonly use frowned upon techniques like dummy pages. These are webpages filled with fake links, in an attempt to fool the search engines into thinking they were popular. While Black Hat techniques were great in the past, the recent Google updates have cracked down heavily on their restrictions and penalties. Most websites that use only Blackhat tactics find themselves being blacklisted or not being indexed by Google.
- Grey Area?
- There is a grey area in between Whitehat and Blackhat SEO but much of that has to do with quantity over time or quality altogether. Forum posting is a good example, they are good for backlinks and helps your Off-Site SEO, provided its done manually and in moderation. If you use a program to post spammy forum posts in bulk over a short period of time, that is considered Black Hat SEO and you run the risk of penalization or no indexed backlinks. Blog commenting is another great example between white and black SEO. Manual comments on strong websites provide high quality backlinks, auto commenting software that posts everywhere can be very damaging, in both short and long term affects.
- Keep in mind that not all Black Hat SEO is bad, there are programs and paid services that Google frowns upon but has no way of stopping. Take a well made Article Spinner, you simply write up a quality article, feed it to the spinner, and you can create dozens based on the same information. Some spinners do a far better job than others but if you manage to find a worthy service, then Google is none the wiser and you have more than one article. I prefer to use White Hat SEO, its practices yield better, high quality, safer results in my experience and seem to have an increasing positive impact with every algorithm update.
