  9.
  10. Apply the IPS patch to an unaltered English Super Mario World ROM. (Do not apply it to the Japanese hack.)

  17. - Background -
  18.
  19. Let's get things straight.
  20.
  21. On June 29th, 2008, NicoNico Douga user TAKE (Takemoto) began posting a video series named "Making My Friend Play My Mario Hack."
  22.
  23. It showcased the attempts of the author's "friend," Kiba, to play his fiendishly difficult ROM hack of Super Mario World. Without savestates, of course.
  24.
  25. The videos edited together Kiba's gameplay to display all his deaths, but also his slow advance through each level, eventually culminating in a successful run.
  26.
  27. This effective method of showcasing a difficult, trap-filled level became standard on NicoNico for hacks of that type (and is really preferable to some guy screaming and constantly savestating).
  28.
  29. Kiba persevered and was able to beat the hack. For his incredible achievements, he came to be known as "Godfriend." Godfriend, best friend.
  30.
  31. When the series was over, the hack was released publicly with the filename "kaizomarioworld." This name simply comes from "kaizou," which is Japanese for a modded game
  32.
  33. (it's the "Hack" part of the series's name), so this is not necessarily the name of the hack. In Japanese communities, it's usually shortened to "Friend Mario."
  34.
  35. "Kaizo Mario World" (or various other totally-made-up names) became very popular on English sites upon release, with relatively little attention to where it really came from beyond "Japan lol."
  36.
  37. You may be aware of the legacy it left.
  38.
  39. TAKE began a second series in the same manner on July 14th, 2008. (No rest for Godfriend - the last video of the first series was July 13th!)
  40.
  41. Again, the hack was released publicly upon completion, and garnered attention as the sequel to "Kaizo Mario World."
  42.
  43. After that, TAKE did a difficult Pokémon hack in a similar format in August/September of 2008. Then he vanished for a few years.
  44.
  45. During this time, I translated the two SMW hacks, though I'm unsure how popular those English versions actually got. I can't keep track of ALL my translations.
  46.
  47. Finally, on October 28th, 2012, Making My Friend Play My Mario Hack: Part the Third began. Today (November 29th, 2012), it concluded.
  48.
  49. I don't think anything more needs to be said.

  55. - Translation Notes -
  56.
  57. Wakayama is a prefecture in Kansai, with a capital of the same name. (The "yama" part means "mountain.")
  58. Death Peak is likely in reference to the mountain in Chrono Trigger.
  59. Nabana no Sato is an amusement park in Japan.
  60. Hakata Bay is a bay in Fukuoka.
  61. The Skytree is a broadcasting tower in Tokyo, and indeed Japan's number one tourist attraction.
  62. Koopa Keep: Tokyo/Kyoto should be more like "Bowser's Castle: Tokyo/Kyoto Branch," but there wasn't much room.
  63. Mitsuo Aida was a calligrapher and poet. Probably never wrote about Mario.
  64. Umeda Under(ground) Mall is... what it sounds like, really.
  65.
  66. ---
  67.
  68. - TAKE's Video Comments -
  69.
  70. = Part 1 (Wakayama) =
  71. I finally met up with my friend Kiba again, and in commemoration, I got him to play for me. Prepare to die.
  72.
  73.
  74. = Part 2 (Death Peak) =
  75. When I see my friend lamenting a merciless death, I find myself unable to contain my laughter. Ahahahaha!
  76.
  77. That was a joke.
  78.
  79.
  80. = Part 3 (Nabana no Sato) =
  81. I was completely drunk when I made this stage, so it's pretty out there. Oh well.
  82.
  83.
  84. = Part 4 (High-Class Estate) =
  85. Yesterday [November 2nd] was my friend's birthday. (I forgot until he told me.)
  86. I gave him rice and jam as a present.
  87.
  88.
  89. = Part 5 (Hakata Bay) =
  90. Let's evaluate your sadist level! If any of the following apply to you, you are a sadist!
  91.
  92. - You've spent 30 seconds or more knocking on the door to an occupied bathroom stall. (I prefer to talk to the people inside.)
  93. - You've seen someone with their fly open, but didn't tell them - you told someone else. (I've only taken pictures.)
  94. - You've karate-chopped people drinking water bottles in the chest. (Safety first - don't want to get myself soaked!)
  95. - You've abruptly changed gears on the driver of a car while sitting in the passenger seat. (Only in arcade racing games.)
  96. - You've commented "lol" or the like upon seeing a death in a Mario game. (I just sit next to him and laugh.)
  97.
  98. Note: None of the above apply to the author. (Don't do the gear change one for real!)
  99.
  100.
  101. = Part 6 (Skytree) =
  102. I was visiting my friend Kiba's apartment, and when I came back from the bathroom, I found him hunched over playing a game.
  103. "Aw, that's cute," I thought, then noticed something shiny on his back. Looking closer, I saw it was a zipper.
  104. Naturally, my curiosity about the insides of my friend would not be sated any other way. Rude and guilty as I felt, I decided to pull the zipper.
  105. I brought it down slowly while imagining I'd find this or that inside, and... my friend's internal organs and bones, tightly packed, came oozing out.
  106. Well, it only made sense for a human body to have that stuff, I figured. And then I woke up.
  107.
  108.
  109. = Part 7 (Koopa Keep: Tokyo) =
  110. I thought attributing to Mitsuo Aida would be well-received. I'm contemplating it now. My friend gave me quite a glare.
  111.
  112.
  113. [Umeda Undermall was skipped in the video series, oddly. Probably because it's a maze.]
  114.
  115.
  116. = Part 8 (Hell) =
  117. What's this I see? It's always my friend who gets the support.
  118. Are people treating I, the creator, as a villain? Is that how it is?
  119. Oh yes, say what you will. I'm a cruel man. The only purpose I serve is advancing my friend.
  120. But remember this.
  121. Without my amazing hint, this is a true incomprehensible ass of a stage!
  122.
  123.
  124. = Part 9 (Heaven) =
  125. I got punched in the gut around 9:57 [in response to being trapped before the midpoint]. How cruel... (´;ω;`)
  126.
  127.
  128. = Part 10 (Koopa Keep: Kyoto Part 1) =
  129. Bowser in Part 7 was actually colored like you-know-what from SMB2 (Lost Levels), but no one noticed... (´・ω・`)
  130.
  131.
  132. = Part 11 (Koopa Keep: Kyoto Part 2) =
  133. I did all I could to power up the final boss. I guarantee you'll not avoid taking a hit.
  134. You need more than three Bob-omb hits to beat it.
  135.
  136.
  137. [In the credits for the last video, Take notably credits NicoNico for "comments" and himself for "encouraging words."
  138. He also lists the death counts for each stage: 50, 81, 97, 37, 20, 151, 77, 101, 311, 283. 1209 deaths in total.
  139. As for Kiba's rank...]
  140.
  141. 0 and under 20 minutes: Super Mario
  142. 0: Yoshi
  143. 1 - 49: Peach
  144. 50 - 99: Toad
  145. 100 - 199: Plankton
  146. 200+: Luigi
  147.
  148. [Looks like Luigi. Better luck next time!]
