  2. I know in cpanel you can use temporary URL's to help people preview sites and i know the amount of trouble it can cause, so i was wondering if we can instead of having a temporary URL such as http://ipaddress/~username we could use a spare domain name i have on the server?

  24. Well, you can use various ways to test your website before DNS propagation. If you want to use a domain name instead of a IP address, I consider that as a possible solution.

  26. Setup your spare domain on the server and any new site can be added either to a subdomain like
  27. newsite1.yoursapredomain.com or yoursparedomain.com/newsite1

  29. Other practical way to test your website before dns propagation is using the hosts. file on your computer or device.

  33. Okay, i think i've explained myself wrong. What i mean is, can i set my spare domain as a global test domain for cpanel or something like that?

  38. Set an alias on the cPanel account you want to preview as sub.domain.com and then set up the DNS as required for that account.

  41. We usually set up a folder on our main development domain and upload the site there for preview. As long as it's not using a database and you use relative linking, it works fine.
  42. Move over, coffee, this is a job for alcohol!
  43. It's way easier to use the HOSTS file method. This means you don't have to set ~userdir URLs on your app, just point it to the right IP (account's IP on new server).

  45. Then your computer, and only your computer will see the domain as it appears on the new IP. You can upload a host.txt with the name of your host to each environment to ensure you hit the right version of the site.
