46. The cop test pilot for an experimental police helicopter learns the sinister implications of the new vehicle.
 47. Blue Thunder is a specially modified helicopter. It is for police work, but is armed and designed to counter street insurgencies. Its makers want to show what it will do, but have to train Los Angeles Police pilot Frank Murphy to fly and use it in order to allow it to operate in the city. Murphy and the project pilot have differences going back to Vietnam. The conflict between them continues to heat up as Murphy begins to suspect that Blue Thunder is more than has been disclosed.
 48. "Blue Thunder" is about as perfect as a B-grade thriller can get. It has all the right clichés: the tortured Vietnam vet, the inexperienced sidekick, the grumpy boss, the slimy and smart villain. And, of course, there's the "MacGuffin", an old Alfred Hitchcock term for a particular object in a movie that everyone pursues. In this case, the MacGuffin is a prototype helicopter, presumably being loaned to the LAPD to head off potential terrorist (movements) during the Olympic Games.

Technically, the film is quite good overall. Especially in the chase scenes, one gets the feeling that Badham and his crew spent hundreds of hours in the air to get the quality and quantity of footage necessary to pull this movie off. The editing, however, leaves something to be desired at times, particularly the ADR, which on numerous occasions does not appear to match the actors' mouth movements. Otherwise, however, the film is masterful, especially considering the technology used to edit it at the time.

Overall rating: 8 out of 10.
 49. This was supposed to do for police surveillance helicopters what "Jaws" did for sharks.

It wasn't THAT successful, but "Blue Thunder" does score on a few fronts.

For one, it is very well-made technically. You have to give Badham credit - the look of this film certainly makes the bells and whistles look authentic, anyway. And the Orwellian themes, as others have noticed, are addressed head-on.

The actors do their best in a movie where the helicopters get the top billing. Scheider does his stalwart, straight-arrow best (just like in "Jaws" - coincidence?), Clark is resilient as his girlfriend, Stern plays his best friend well (for a JAFO) and as the villain, McDowell is icy and nasty in equal measure. Oates has little to do but does it well as Scheider's boss.

The story, though, is a mishmash of techno-babble, intrigue, the latest surveillance techniques (of 1983), tough guy talk and the freedom of the press, with helicopter dogfights in downtown LA thrown in for good measure.

All in all, "Blue Thunder" makes its point but fails to follow through, except maybe if you count the last scene. Definitely throws out the possibility for a sequel, if you know what I mean.

Six stars.

TIDBIT - McDowell admitted during filming that he got very airsick and many shots had to be re-taken, since he was throwing up in just about every in-flight scene he was in.

Now THERE'S a sequel - "Blue Thunder 2: The Dramamine Patrol".
 50. The opposition of good and evil is devoid of any subtle shading, so just sit back and enjoy the spectacular dogfight over downtown Los Angeles.
 51. The DVD version differs in one scene compared to the tape version. The VHS is identical to the laserdisc and earlier TV broadcasts. a5c7b9f00b
