- Hey Everyone, and welcome to a new XIM Myth.
- In this series I will take a closer look at XIM related topics which are very popular right now, but no one really seems to understand their purpose or the logic behind them. Because of that, people often misinterpret these topics or have a false opinion on them.
- In each video I will go over one of these topics and will explain everything you need to know to fully understand it. And at the end of the video you will be able to judge by yourself if the discussed topic is useful for your gameplay or not. Also, if you would like to suggest a topic that I should cover in a future video, then you can do so by posting in the comments down below.
- So today we will take a closer look at the following topic. Will the XIM Apex work with the new Xbox and Playstation?
- Well now that the E3 is over, I start to get the same question over and over again. And in the last few days there were actually so many comments and private messages, that I decided to make a video instead of answering with a long wall of text each time. So yeah guys, you broke me. I really didn’t intend to make such a video because it’s for the most part just pure speculation based on very little facts.
- And there’s one thing I have to make clear right from the start. A definitive statement can only be done once the new consoles have been analyzed and tested in the XIM Headquarters. And that will probably happen somewhere around the launch window of the new consoles, but not earlier. At least that was the rough time window when we received confirmation about the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. So it will probably be the same again with the Xbox Project Scarlett and the Playstation 5. Of course unless Microsoft and Sony share some very specific info’s in the next few month, which will probably not happen.
- So while I cannot give a definite answer on that question right now, we will still take a closer look at WHAT we know so far about the new consoles, and make an educated guess based on those infos. With that approach we should end up with a pretty good prediction on if the XIM Apex will work with the new consoles or not.
- So let’s look at the new Xbox first, which currently has the Codename Project Scarlett. In Microsoft’s E3 Press Conference we didn’t learn a lot about the console itself, however they shared quite a few details on their new Xbox Elite controller which is much more interesting for the XIM Apex than the few infos that we received about their new console.
- The new Elite controller will cost 180€ and will be out later this year. And it is pretty save to assume that it will work with the new Xbox as well. Just a few days ago Microsoft actually confirmed that Xbox one controllers will also work with the new Xbox. So we basically are looking a controller that will work with both, the old console and the new one. Now since the XIM Apex only needs the controller for communication and authentification with the console, and on top of that it already supports the current Xbox Elite controller, this could actually mean that the XIM Apex will work with the new Xbox right out of the box. At least there is a fair chance for that.
- Another fact that underlines this prediction is the following: We know that the development of the Xbox One controller has cost Microsoft around 100 million dollars, so its pretty save to assume that they want to use those controllers for as long as possible to capitalize on that investment. So it is rather unlikely that they will develop a new controller for the next Xbox but instead will continue to use the same Xbox One controller, or a slightly modified version of it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the current Xbox One controller will also work with the new Xbox.
- So in regards to the new Xbox I think it looks rather good actually.
- But what about the new Playstation 5?
- Once again we do not know much about the console and its operating system yet, but Sony has already shared some infos recently that help us quite a bit to get a picture of what we have to expect.
- The most important infos are the following:
- Sony has announced that the new Playstation will have an inbuilt PS4 emulator that will allow you to play your old Playstation 4 games on the new console. Now normally that wouldn’t mean a lot, however it’s the way they plan to implement that emulator. Its not only a software driven emulator, but it will also put the hardware specs of the Playstation 5 into a PS4 mode. They have actually filed a patent for that in which they go a little bit more into detail.
- The next promising info is that the PS5 will offer crossplay with Playstation 4 users. Both PS4 and PS5 players will play in the same lobbies. Plus you will also be able to migrate all your Playstation 4 savefiles and other profile content to the Playstation 5, so you can pretty much continue on the new console where you have stopped on the Playstation 4.
- Overall this sounds like the operating system of the PS5 will be very similar to the one of the PS4, which increases the chances of the XIM Apex to work with the PS5 by quite a bit. The XIM Apex might even be compatible with the Playstation 5 right out of the box, although I would say the chances for that are slightly lower than with the new Xbox.
- But what if the XIM Apex will not work right out of the box with the new consoles? Well in that case the software developers in the XIM Headquarter will of course do their best to release a firmware update to add compatibility for the new consoles as soon as possible. That is probably the most realistic scenario anyway because even minor changes to the operating system and the hardware controller of the consoles would require such a XIM Apex update.
- Anyway, if you would like to stay updated on the whole matter, then I would recommend to check out the XIM Forums. Any XIM Apex related announcement in regards to the new consoles will be posted there first. Alternatively I can make a new video again when we have an actual confirmation about the new consoles. Let me know if you would like me to do that.
