Bio:
Irina Laskarina Mavrokordatou is a child of the Mavrokordatoi and Mavrogenes families, the former one of the most prominent of the new aristocracy that rose in Kovalian since the surrender and the latter equally prominent among the mercantile families.  Though they fought during the wars to preserve Kovalia, in the years after the surrender and collapse they have moved to a policy of loose rapprochement with the Zorestrian Imperial administration.  Irina is a middle child of her generation, but never fit in well.  Though she had an early and thorough education with tutors from Cult of the Creator and natural philosophers of the Pandidakterion, some of whom were themselves secretly practitioners of the Kovalian old ways and faiths, she proved to be a mistrustful and cynical child, curious but always questioning.  She did not take any better to the martial arts of the families: in spite of natural ability, she had little interest in spear or lance, she and the family pegasi herds shared a mutual distaste for each other, and she tended to get seasick in when sailing on any body of water larger than a bathtub.  She was more competent with bow or sling, but these were peasant weapons not fit for noble use, and her parents strongly discouraged any such learning.  Her behaviour only worsened as she came as she became a teenager, as she increasingly began to sneak off into the surrounding town or foothills.  Their attempts to crack down on her proved only further inducement to rebellion, and her "slumming" quickly led to a certain quiet infamy when it became rumoured (falsely) that she had made contact with a band of kleftes on her parents' instruction.  Finally, in frustration, her parents sent her to Zorestra at the age of 15 by leaning on an old family friend named Agathias Mysitis, scholarch of a Kovalian academy in the capital.  Hopefully, they thought, she would find some stability there or at least, rumours of her behaviour cease threatening the family's very real, very secret dealings on both sides of the growing Kovalian unrest.

In this, her parents' judgment eventually proved sound.  No longer a child, she suddenly found herself with no leash of family responsibility to strain against, only a purse and a mandate to stay far away.  Agathias proved to have a mild hand and she began to settle down.  He encouraged her questioning, and when he found she had a fine hand with a pen, immediately drafted her as a scribe in the academy.  Though he too frowned on her taste in weapons, he did not particularly care about any such social stigma and suggested that she supplement it with a pragmatic mix of magic.  It also helped in gaining her respect that the old man, joking considered by his students to have been born a curmudgeon, was himself rebellious: he considered himself not a Zorestrian or Kovalian in faith, but a philosophical atheist, and would regularly fend off charges of impiety.  As she grew and finally blossomed into her true self, she became one of the handful of people he trusted to send out abroad on her own in his personal pet project: studying the Red Devil and the past cataclysms that threatened the world.

When the Zorestrian royal family reached out to Scholarch Mysitis regarding an expedition to recover Twelve Orbs, he demurred due to his advanced years.  Instead, he suggested Irina go instead.  Though she protested that she did not know nearly enough to serve as an expert, he observed that he wasn't sending her as an expert, as the royal family already had such experts.  Instead, he was sending her as someone who could both defend herself and keep her eyes open for new things, someone who would know what to look for to bring together the Twelve Orbs.
