  1. <Corporation|back> okay, a question
  2. <Corporation|back> is it a good idea for a country to send a memo to another country asking them to reform
  3. <Corporation|back> but do nothing else?
  4. <Corporation|back> Would the mere act of sending a memo serve as enough democracy promotion that you need to do no more?
  5. <Nuklearni-okurka> who do you want to send a memo to
  6. <Retro> if you send a country a memo that says "hey please reform" that's not getting involved
  7. <Retro> all it does is establish your stance on the matter
  8. <Retro> it does jack shit for them
  9. <Retro> both in terms of influence and actually assisting whatever process you're requesting
  10. <Kidiri> But what if you deliver the memo by means of armed forces?
  11. <Retro> it's polite but utterly utterly ineffective
  12. <Retro> <A!exor> Servant: Look, I know /you/ think sending a democratic memo is easy, but /I/ can't do it. I started but it was too hard.
  13. * Retro is now known as Retro-AG]
  14. <Kidiri> !whine being Czech
  15. <Retro-AG> <A!exor> Kidiri: I just don't think I have the patience to get better at being Czech.
  16. <Nuklearni-okurka> nobody of you could do it
  17. <Nuklearni-okurka> no one of you is brave enough to be Czech
  18. <Corporation|back> Retro-AG: I just thought that if people like promoting democracy
  19. <Corporation|back> then you could do so cheaply
  20. <Corporation|back> by sending a memo
  21. * FinDude (~chatzilla@NewNet-439F9C83.elisa-laajakaista.fi) has joined #bay12games
  22. <Corporation|back> intervening in a country's internal affairs would be a violation of natsov after all
  23. <Retro-AG> that's not actually promoting democracy
  24. <Retro-AG> it's saying "hey please do this"
  25. <Retro-AG> do you know what democracy is
  26. <Corporation|back> The government where people vote for their elite
  27. <Corporation|back> to govern them
  28. <Retro-AG> so how is country B sending a memo asking for country A to do something democratic
  29. <Retro-AG> or 'promoting democracy'
  30. <Corporation|back> Promoting democracy is different from imposing democracy or trying to overthrow governments
  31. <Corporation|back> It's like creating an ad for what you want to do
  32. <Corporation|back> you put that ad all over the place
  33. <Corporation|back> and thus promote your product
  34. <Corporation|back> That is different from activvely to coerce people to buy your product.
  35. <Retro-AG> that is the stupidest thing
  36. <Retro-AG> what you're talking about is basically like
  37. <Retro-AG> a 'raising awareness for democracy' campaign
  38. <Retro-AG> and it wouldn't actually make Country B any more democratic
  39. <Retro-AG> sending a letter wouldn't count as democratic action at all
  40. <Retro-AG> or country a rather
  41. <Retro-AG> and hell the people of Country A would probably never even know about it
  42. <Retro-AG> like what do you expect to happen
  43. <Retro-AG> Country A government officials get a note that's like "hey please reform"
  44. <Retro-AG> and they think "hey man this sounds like a promotion of democracy"
  45. <Corporation|back> Retro-AG: The thing is though, all I have hard is democracy promotion
  46. <Retro-AG> "have we tried that yet?"
  47. <Corporation|back> *heard
  48. <Retro-AG> "ok guys from now on we are a democracy
  49. <Retro-AG> "
  50. <Retro-AG> what do you mean 'all i have heard'
  51. <Corporation|back> But at the same time, people are advocating for extreme policies
  52. <Kidiri> Let's call the Flex to settle this argument. =3
  53. <Corporation|back> that would interfere with NatSov
  54. <Corporation|back> and make the Country angry at you
  55. <Corporation|back> Sending a polite memo for change is a way to ensure that democracy is being promoted
  56. <Retro-AG> sending a memo from government-to-government, or even something public like the head of a country going on TV and saying that Country A has to start reforming is not democracy
  57. <Corporation|back> without violating NatSov or causing the Country you're doing the "promoting" on angy at you
  58. <Retro-AG> it has fuck all to do with democracy
  59. <Retro-AG> it's just supporting a position
  60. * jalis (~jalis@NewNet-1590731B.dhcp.inet.fi) Quit (Quit: jalis)
  61. <Retro-AG> <Corporation|back> Sending a polite memo for change is a way to ensure that democracy is being promoted <-- this sentence is inaccurate and you're an idiot for thinking it's not

  63. <Retro-AG> DEAR IDI AMIN
  64. <Retro-AG> WE HEAR YOU ARE KILLING PEOPLE AND DOESN'T AFRAID OF ANYTHING
  65. <Retro-AG> WOULD YOU MIND UH
  66. <Retro-AG> CUTTING THAT OUT I GUESS
  67. <Retro-AG> LOVE, AMERICA
  68. <Retro-AG> NEWS REPORT AT 11: UGANDA NOW DEMOCRATIC
  69. <Retro-AG> EVERYONE HAPPY AND ALIVE, SAYS BYSTANDER
  70. <Retro-AG> IDI STEPPED DOWN PEACEFULLY, PROPER DEMOCRATIC GVT. INSTALLED
  71. <Retro-AG> WHEN ASKED, SAYS "THE US SENT ME A LETTER, I REALLY FELT LIKE PROMOTING DEMOCRACY AFTER THAT"
  72. <Retro-AG> ANOTHER VICTORY FOR MEMOS
  73. <Nuklearni-okurka> Reaganomicon
  74. <Nuklearni-okurka> oops
  75. <Nuklearni-okurka> Retro-AG
  76. <Nuklearni-okurka> could you please be more democratic
  77. <Nuklearni-okurka> pleeeaseeee
  78. <Retro-AG> yeah sorry i'll get on that
  79. <Retro-AG> thanks for telling me
  80. <Retro-AG> i had no idea
  81. <Nuklearni-okurka> <3 - democracy
  82. <Corporation|back> Eh, the alternative to the "memos" is far worse for me to complemante
  83. <Nuklearni-okurka> why are you asking anyways
  84. <Nuklearni-okurka> are you going to send memos to NK?
  85. * DDR (~DDR@NewNet-1B4848BB.bchsia.telus.net) has joined #bay12games
  86. <Kidiri> DDR, please be more democratic.
  87. <Retro-AG> did you mean to say 'compliment'
  88. <Kidiri> Less communism, please.
  89. <Kidiri> Okay?
  90. <Nuklearni-okurka> yes sorry Retro-AG
  91. <Kidiri> Thanks in advance.
  92. <Nuklearni-okurka> I should be more democratic next time
  93. <Corporation|back> Nuklearni-okurka: Because it has been standard policy
  94. <Corporation|back> in the US
  95. <Corporation|back> for the US to send memos to allied dictators
  96. <Corporation|back> asking them to reform
  97. <Corporation|back> and I felt that was a good policy
  98. <Retro-AG> the US does a lot to promote democracy
  99. <Retro-AG> that's not one of the things that counts as such
  100. <Corporation|back> oh.
  101. <Retro-AG> what it is is an option that they know will have no effect
  102. <Corporation|back> Oh yea, the US also funds NGOs
  103. <Corporation|back> but I think they only spend a little bit about
  104. <Corporation|back> it
  105. <Retro-AG> but they are doing it to a) solidify their stance and make their position clear, and b) so that nobody can say they never tried asking nicely
  106. <Corporation|back> Retro-AG: Doing anything more however is BAD.
  107. <Corporation|back> The country hates you interfering in their domestic affairs
  108. <Retro-AG> <Corporation|back> Retro-AG: Doing anything more however is BAD. <-- you're a massive fucking idiot, and I'm sorry that there's not a more polite way to say that
  109. <ingevi> o.O
  110. <Nuklearni-okurka> haha
  111. <Nuklearni-okurka> that would make a good quote
  112. <Retro-AG> there are really only a few options available for the Country B
  113. <Retro-AG> 1. Informal, basically stating what they want Country A to start doing (ie. sending a memo i guess)
  114. <Retro-AG> this has no effect other than to state Country B's position
  115. <Retro-AG> it might have an effect in situations where B already has a great deal of power over A but in such cases the memo's a formality really anyhow
  116. <Retro-AG> 2. Beneficial, supporting charities and foundations and whatnot within A to support B's will
  117. <Retro-AG> this includes bribes as well
  118. <Retro-AG> or deals like "you work on those reforms, we'll maybe introduce a bill that encourages trade with you
  119. <Retro-AG> this is generally the most polite of the options that have an effect
  120. <Retro-AG> 3. Peaceful Opposition, or stuff like trade embargos, public condemnation, efforts to reduce support or supplies
  121. <Retro-AG> the reverse form of the beneficial deal listed above
  122. <Retro-AG> "you start doing those reforms or we'll keep giving you shit like this about it"
  123. <Retro-AG> 4. Militaristic Opposition
  124. <Retro-AG> which is extreme and effectively "fuck this i'll just do it myself then"
  125. * okiN (~Niko@NewNet-8EA3848.zone11.bethere.co.uk) has joined #bay12games
  126. <Retro-AG> 1 will never work, only clarify a stance
  127. <Retro-AG> 2 and 3 are the main options
  128. * MissingNo (~k52-arch@99A9087E.D5D51005.BC987AC5.IP) has joined #bay12games
  129. <Retro-AG> 4 is very extreme and will get you shit from countries C D and E
  130. <Retro-AG> and now that i've explained a grade school level of international relations
  131. <Retro-AG> back to work
  132. * okiN_ (~Niko@NewNet-8EA3848.zone11.bethere.co.uk) Quit (Ping timeout)
  133. * DDR (~DDR@NewNet-1B4848BB.bchsia.telus.net) Quit (Ping timeout)
  134. <Nuklearni-okurka> he just won
  135. <Nuklearni-okurka> shit's over
  136. <Nuklearni-okurka> let's go home
