- In 1993, the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence Project receives a transmission detailing an alien DNA structure, along with instructions on how to splice it with human DNA. The result is Sil, a sensual but deadly creature who can change from a beautiful woman to an armour-plated killing machine in the blink of an eye. Government agent Xavier Fitch assembles a team of scientists and mercenaries to locate and destroy Sil before she manages to find a mate and breed.
- S.E.T.I - Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence - sends a message to outer space to whatever intelligent life form out there might be listening. Around twenty years later, S.E.T.I receives a message back from an unknown life source, giving S.E.T.I their version of the DNA structure and instructions on how to mix that life source's DNA with the DNA of the life on earth. The science team successfully creates a creature, a hybrid with both forms of DNA, in which they codename Sil. Due to some mistakes, however, the experiment had to be terminated. As they are gassing Sil with Cyanide poisoning while she helplessly panics inside a heptagonal glass casing, Sil who was then a young teenager breaks out of the lab and successfully manages to escape. Sil causes trouble, murdering innocent people, and then she sits in a cocoon on a train and erupts a fully grown woman. Sil might be incredibly gorgeous and very intelligent, but she proves to be extremely deadly. She is on a mission to try and mate with a human male, but the science team that is gathered has to quickly catch up to her and stop her, for if Sil manages to mate with a man, she could produce offspring that might destroy the entire human race!
- Okay. Sil was amazing, courtesy of H.R. Giger's designing, other than that this movie reminded me of a bad X-files episode. Not very original but there was lots of blood, nudity and gore to substitute for the lack of a plot-line.
- I was really looking forward to seeing Species; I was 14 when it came out, so I couldn't see it at the cinema. I finally saw it on video the other day, and boy was I disappointed. I realised it is a straight-to-video quality exploitative B-movie with a 90's twist of the alien killing a few blokes. The unconvincing alien is yet more of HR Giger's sick, self-indulgent weirdness, the universally poor performances are all either bland, irritating, embarrassing or all three. The movie is too fast paced for its own good, and too reliant on obvious gimmicks of gore and nudity.<br/><br/>Basically, an alien/human hybrid escapes from a top secret lab, and a 'special' team of c-grade actors set out to catch her. Now, who would you send after a deadly alien killing machine? Something like Arnold Schwarzenegger's commando team from Predator, proberbaly? Not here. In Species, the team tracking the alien consists of a Captain Picard-lookalike, an EXTREMELY irritating fat guy who has a phsychic link with the alien, an embarrassing rugged tough guy, a Hugh Grant-type and some woman.<br/><br/>The movie starts off fast and doesn't slow down, but this is not in its favour. The suspense should have been built up about Sil, the alien creature in the lab at the start, so we wonder WHY she is so dangerous - and then she escapes. It happens so fast and casually, it's not exciting. The action scenes are small, unoriginal, unimportant and badly shot.<br/><br/>The worst thing about the movie is the acting.Natascha Henstridge is okay as the alien, but everybody else is shockingly lame. The supposedly macho-hero guy is embarrassing - before the end he stops to mutter cringe-worthy attempt at being cool and hard with the line:''Let go of him you motherf**ker.'' Even worse is the fat guy helping him hunt Sil. He is unbelievably irritating.<br/><br/>There are only two good things about Species; they belong to Natascha Henstridge and appear quite a few times throughout the movie. The rest is lame.
- The direction by Roger Donaldson is facile and understated, as is, for the most part, the script by Dennis Feldman. Even the actors pitch in to play down the silliness of it all.
- When an extraterrestrial alien resembling a normal female child escapes from her isolation chamber, government agent Xavier Fitch (<a href="/name/nm0001426/">Ben Kingsley</a>) assembles a group of scientists, composed of anthroplogist Dr Stephen Arden (<a href="/name/nm0000547/">Alfred Molina</a>), molecular biologist Dr Laura Baker (<a href="/name/nm0001339/">Marg Helgenberger</a>), and empath Dan Smithson (<a href="/name/nm0001845/">Forest Whitaker</a>), along with mercenary Preston Lennox (<a href="/name/nm0000514/">Michael Madsen</a>), to hunt down and destroy the rapidly growing "Sil" (<a href="/name/nm0000449/">Natasha Henstridge</a>) before she manages to breed. The screenplay was written by filmmaker Dennis Feldman, who also produced the movie. However, a novelization, also titled Species (1995), written by American author Yvonne Navarro, was released concurrently with the movie. The film was followed by three sequels: <a href="/title/tt0120841/">Species II (1998)</a> (1998), <a href="/title/tt0410650/">Species III (2004)</a> (2004), and <a href="/title/tt0844894/">Species: The Awakening (2007)</a> (2007). Fitch, Dan, Press, and Laura follow Sil into the sewers. When Fitch is separated from the others, Sil kills him. Press goes deeper into the dewers in an attempt to flush her out. Dan continues to search and comes upon a small naked boy (<a href="/name/nm0122977/">Kurtis Burow</a>) who has just eaten a rat. As Dan tries to coax the boy to come out, he opens his mouth and strikes at Dan with a long tongue. The boy then begins to morph into a replica of Sil, so Dan shoots him with a flame thrower, and the boy falls into a pool of oil. Suddenly Sil hops forward and pursues Dan while Laura, stuck between some rocks, screams for Press to help. Sil shoots tentacles out from her breasts in an attempt to kill Press, but he fires several bullets into her, knocking her into the oily mass of flames. Sil tries to pull Dan into the flames with her, but Press loads his gun and blows her head off. "She was half us, half something else," Laura comments. "I want to know what was the predatory half." Press simply replies, "The dead half." In the final scene, as Dan, Press, and Laura make their way out of the sewer, two rats meet each other. One opens his mouth and strikes the other one with his long tongue. a5c7b9f00b
