  1. *** Glitchless Ocarina of Time Speedrun rules ****
  2.
  3. Basic rules:
  4. - Time starts when a new file is selected
  5. - Time ends when the last button is pressed for the last attack on Ganon
  6. - The run is done in one sitting, with no resets (no "savewarping")
  7. - Dying is allowed, and continuing from a death is allowed ("deathwarping")
  8. - The run is typically done on the Japanese version, but any version is acceptable. The text in the Japanese version is shorter than it is in English, making cutscenes a bit shorter. There are no other differences
  9.
  10. Clarification on glitches:
  11.
  12. Since there is such a gray area in defining what is or is not a "glitch" in this game, a group of Japanese OoT players voted to define a set of rules that they would all abide by. It is important that they all use the same rules, since it allows players to compare times with each other. Since then, players from around the world have begun to use these rules, and participate in discussions and votes to revise the rules. These rules are not perfect, but they are the current standard adopted by players from ZeldaSpeedRuns.com, and the OoT speedrunning community worldwide. This document is accurate as of April 24, 2013.
  13.
  14. Allowed:
  15. - Power Crouch Stabbing
  16. This happens every time you crouch stab. See: http://zeldaspeedruns.com/oot/tech/power-crouch-stabbing
  17. - Roll invincibility
  18. During part of Link's roll, he is invincible. This can be used to avoid taking damage by timing a roll
  19. - Jumpslashing in mid-air for more distance
  20. This can be used to cross some gaps where a regular jump wouldn't reach
  21. - Shield drop
  22. Using your shield will cause Link to immediately drop whatever he is carrying. This is generally faster than placing it with the A button
  23. - Using broken deku stick
  24. Sometimes after breaking a Deku Stick, Link will continue to hold it and can attack with it. The broken stick has a shorter range, but cannot break again, so it can be used for multiple attacks
  25. - Roll from the blue switch in Jabu
  26. At the final floor switch in Jabu Jabu's Belly that you normally hold down with a box, you can stand on the switch then quickly roll to the door and open it before it closes again
  27. - Damage boosting
  28. Getting hit by an enemy or other damage source (such as a bomb) in midair can push Link farther through the air. This can be used to cross a few larger gaps, sometimes combined with a jumpslash for even more distance
  29. - Getting on top of the falling spike trap in the Shadow Temple
  30. In one room of the Shadow Temple, there are falling spike traps that you can stand on. Rather than take the long way around, a well placed backflip or damage from a floor razor can boost you onto one of them
  31. - Damage Buffering
  32. Link is invulnerable for a short time after taking damage. When Link is playing the ocarina, his invulnerability from damage continues to wear off. Using this, you can take lots of damage from the same source (usually an explosion)
  33. - Placing bombs on lava pits to damage Volvagia
  34. After diving into a lava pit, an explosion from a bomb placed on that pit can deal damage to Volvagia
  35. - Skip talking to the owl by switching weapons
  36. Using a weapon causes the owl to wait until you are finished before he talks to you. By quickly changing between 2 weapons while moving, you can pass the owl without him speaking at all
  37. - Opening underwater chests with the Iron Boots
  38. Some chests in the game are underwater. While it is possible to drain the water from these areas to access the chests normally, the Iron Boots allow you to open these chests while they are still submerged
  39. - Backflip onto the falling ceiling in the Forest Temple
  40. In the room with the falling ceiling in the Forest Temple, you can stand on a small chest and backflip onto the ceiling when it is at its lowest point
  41. - Passing through the back of the door to Darunia's room
  42. If you enter Darunia's room from Death Mountain Crater before opening the door leading to his room, the door will still be closed. However, the door is invisible from the back, and you can simply walk through it (one way) into Goron City
  43. - Attacking through a wall
  44. In a few places in the game, a crystal switch is on the opposite side of a barred wall and you need to attack through the wall to activate it (this is normal). This same technique can be used to attack through red ice, which can be faster than melting it in some situations
  45. - Opening flaming treasure chests
  46. Some treasure chests in the game are engulfed in flames. If you can manage to get close enough to open the chest (usually by taking damage from another source of fire), you can open the chest while it's still on fire
  47.
  48. Banned:
  49.
  50. - Infinite Sword Glitch
  51. - Megaflip
  52. - Ground jump
  53. - Hoverboost
  54. - Superslide
  55. - Hovering
  56. - Crossing Haunted Wasterland as child
  57. - Going Out of Bounds
  58. - Going through a wall
  59. - Getting the Big Key in the Shadow Temple without Din's fire
  60. - Stepping onto an outer wall of area (e.g. early Shadow Temple)
  61. - Diving with navi, ocarina, bottle, or magic items
  62. - Flame storage
  63. - Reverse Bottle Adventure
  64. - Getting the Gold Scale as a child
  65. - Something except for a sword on B (excluding normal circumstances like riding Epona)
  66. - Changing items into bottles
  67. - Wrong warping and skipping cutscenes (using death, etc.)
  68. - Catching something in a bottle during a cutscene (e.g. early basement in the Forest Temple)
  69. - Using a bottled item to hold down a switch
  70. - Ocarina Items
  71. - Z-slide
  72. - A-slide
  73. - Skipping the Big Octo fight in Jabu Jabu's Belly
  74. - Going through the roof of the Gerudo jail with Hookshot or Longshot
  75. - Getting Zora Tunic without blue fire
  76. - Falling through the green slimy thing with a fairy in Jabu Jabu's Belly
  77. - Skipping the "trials" in Ganon's castle
  78. - Dying while standing on a switch in order to skip pushing a block onto it
  79.
  80. NOTE: This list is not exhaustive. New glitches are discovered almost daily, and these rules do not intend to document all known OoT glitches. Use some common sense, avoid doing things that are obviously glitches, and if something is unclear, ask about it at ZeldaSpeedRuns.
