- UCS: Unconditioned Stimulus, the stimulus that the subject does not need to be conditioned to have an adverse reaction to.
- UCR: Unconditioned Response, the response the subject has to the UCS.
- CS: Conditioned Stimulus, the stimulus that the subject acquires an adverse reaction to through conditioning, and before conditioning does not create an adverse response in the subject.
- CR: Conditioned Response, the behavior that the subject exhibits in response to the CS.
- Extinction, The deletion of an association between CS and CR. Occurs after depriving the subject of the UCS after presenting the CS repeatedly.
- Stimulus Discrimination, the phenomenon where the subject exhibits varying amounts of CR when presented with a stimulus that is similar to, but not exactly like, the CS.
- Stimulus Generalization, the phenomenon where the subject exhibits CR when presented with a stimulus that has similar traits to the CS.
- Spontaneous Recovery, the spontaneous reassociation of CS and CR after extinction has occurred.
