  1. Important message: THIS ROUTE WILL NOT WORK FOR VANILLA DMC4(2008), STICK WITH THE NOTES, OR USE THIS "GUIDE": https://www.speedrun.com/dmc4/guide/ckg5x
  2.
  3.
  4. DMC 101 is a giant(or, maybe not) wall of text, that consists ~90% of known strats/skips/fun stuff for the Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition speedrunnning. Please, note that this document is being updated quite often, and much of the cycles/strats might change.
  5.
  6. This document has every single bit of info that you might need to get a >good< time in DMC4:SE, in NG Nero/Dante Devil Hunter speedrun. Good time = <1:30:00 RTA. Do NOT try to beat the record, until you can >consistently< get 1:18:xx runs.
  7.
  8. This document doesn't include ANY Vergil strats/cycles, as there's not enough data to collect from the runners. Same goes for Lady/Trish.

  40. Hello. I am Meka, and the major part of this wall of text is written by me. I might forget some stuff, i might fuck something up, but please, if you somehow found this document, make an attempt and read it thoroughly, as i spent a lot of hours towards DMC3 and DMC4 speedrunning, and i still consider DMC4:SE one of the best speedruns to start your "career" with.
  41.
  42. Why is that? Well... For me, i really enjoy the strats and the cycles changing every second. I enjoy the variety of the moves that you can do, and the variety of options the game gives to me. The game isn't slow enough, and it's not too fast. There's no glitches (exception - Distortion), and the major part of the run is entirely skill based. The game actually rewards you for learning it, and the more time you spend testing the well-knows strats and cycles, the more chances you might find something new. That last part applies to every single speedrun, so you might wanna disregard it.
  43.
  44. I really hope that you, the reader, will share the same emotions from running this game as i do, because there's no real way to pickup this game, unless you enjoy playing it. I don't know a single person, that picked up this game and never played it before.
  45.
  46. Casual playthough: 7-10h. (according to howlongtobeat.com)
  47. Non-casual playthrough: 2.5-4h. (based off 16 runs i've been watching at 2016-2018'ish)
  48. Speedrun: <1.5h. (avg. time being 1.2-1.5h.)
  49.
  50. Learning process: Map knowledge => Movelist => Skips => Distortion + Exceeding => Route => Cycles = 1st run.
  51. Run Difficulty (subjective, ignore this): 7/10.

  120.
  121. >+ Nero +<
  122.
  123. Name - Input - Description
  124.
  125. Speed - Hold any movement button for >1 second - Increases your speed tremendously, when there's no enemies nearby. Doesn't get cancelled if you enter the room full of enemies. Getting Speed around the enemies will take around 10 steps (compared to 1-2).
  126.
  127. Air Hike - Press Jump button mid-air - Basically 2nd jump. Nullifies all momentum, allowing you to make two skips, that are tremendously based on getting that momentum (M10 and M11).
  128.
  129. Chargeshot - Hold Shoot - The hand will burn blue/purple/red color, depending on the level of the charge. Release the button to deal a lots of damage. Can be buffered by holding the button while transitionning between rooms. While in DT, Releasing the shot makes Nero spawn 2/4/6 Summoned Swords.
  130. CS1 knockbacks the enemy briefly, CS2 deals the damage around the target, CS3 deals huge damage, and makes a small AoE explosion in 2 seconds.
  131.
  132. Streak - Lock-On, Forward, Melee - Dash forward and deal damage in a wide cone around the character. Can be used for Slides.
  133. EX Streak - Makes additional spins around the character, dealing even more damage.
  134.
  135. Split - (While in air) Lock-On, Forward, Melee - Quickly fall down, and deal damage to all enemies in your path.
  136. EX Split - Makes a small/medium/huge explosion at the fall location.
  137.
  138. Calibur - (While in air) Lock-On, Down-Forward, Melee - Long air dash that deals damage at the very end of it.
  139. EX Calibur - Deals a lot more damage to all enemies struck by the attack.
  140.
  141. Roulette Spin - (While in air) Melee, Melee, 1 sec. pause, Melee - Damaging multi-hit attack that increases your height. Used to stun Bael/Dagon, or to deal a lots of damage to any enemy that sits in the air (Angelos, Sanctus, Echidna). Second and further usage of this move will decrease the momentum gained, resulting a faster fall.
  142.
  143. Devil Trigger, Maximum Bet - DT, Lock-On, Back, Melee+Buster - Nero charges up his sword up to 2 seconds, releasing a huge energy wave in a form of cross, dealing a lot of damage to every enemy on its path. Releasing the attack right after the input will force Nero to release weaker, but faster version of MB.
  144.
  145. Devil Trigger, Showdown - DT, Lock-On, Forward, Melee+Buster - Nero starts to wind up (takes about 3 seconds) a very kool attack that destroys alots of HP. Be wary, that you actually have to be SUPER close to the target, or this will miss. You can't cancel the whiff animation by any means.
  146.
  147. >+ Dante +<
  148.
  149. Name - Input - Description
  150.
  151. Air Hike - Press Jump button mid-air - Basically 2nd jump. Nullifies all momentum, allowing you to make M12 and M15 skips. While in DT, increases the amount of AH to 2, effectively giving you 3 jumps.
  152.
  153. Trickster Style, Sky Star - (While in air) Style - A simple air dash, with a lots of invul frames. Requires Trickster 3. While in DT, increases the amount of SS to 2, effectively giving you 2 air dashes.
  154.
  155. Trickster Style, Trick Forward - Lock-On, Style - Teleports Dante very close to the target. Works for both ground and air. Requires Trickster 4.
  156.
  157. (You'll be getting SW lvl4 in a run, so i won't write the requirements for the moves below)
  158. Swordmaster Style, Prop/Shredder - Lock-On, Style, Style - Dante starts to swing his sword, launching the enemy in the air. Pressing(and holding) the Style button after this move prolongs the duration he spins his blade.
  159.
  160. Swordmaster Style, Aerial Rave - (While in air) Style x4 - Simple 4-hit air combo. 4th hit knocks the target back.
  161.
  162. Swordmaster Style, (Over)Drive - (Rebellion)Lock-on, Back, hold Sword - Dante charges up his sword to release a shockwave in a line. Can be charged up to 3 times, the color of the blade will change based on the level. Pressing(well, mashing) Style button after the first shockwave makes Dante release two more shockwaves, without any preparations.
  163.
  164. Swordmaster Style, Dance Macabre - (Rebellion)Lock-on, Forward, mash Style - Very long stylish combo, that ends up with a huge "homerun" hit.
  165.
  166. Swordmaster Style, Real Impact - (Gilgamesh) - Lock-on, Back, Style - After a bit of a windup, releases a strong 3-hit attack, that launches both Dante and the enemy in the air. Can obliterate anything in the game with a proper Distortion usage.
  167.
  168. Stinger - (Rebellion) Lock-On, Forward, Melee - Forward dash that deals damage at its end.
  169. DT Stinger - Makes the move longer, deals more damage, hits all enemies in its path.
  170.
  171. Straight - (Gilgamesh) Lock-On, Back, Melee - Dante dashes backwards and starts to charge up an attack that hits the enemy in a line. Can be charged up to 2 times.
  172. Just Straight - Releasing the attack at the "gold" flash between charge transitions tremendously increases the attack damage.
  173. DT Straight - Increases the damage.
  174.
  175. Pin-Up - (Lucifer) Lock-On, Forward, Melee - Summons 5 Lucifer swords in front of Dante.
  176. DT Pin-Up - Places additional 5 swords.
  177.
  178. Chargeshot - (Coyotte, E/I) Hold Shoot - Increases the power of your bullets after releasing the button. Can be buffered.
  179. DT Chargeshot - Every single attack in DT is CS'd.
  180.
  181. Pandora: Epidemic => Hatred => Revenge - (Pandora) Hold Shoot => Wiggle-motion the controller (left-right x2 usually helps) => 2x full spin moves (WASD-WASD or DSAWDSAW) - Transform Pandora into a bowgun => Bazooka => Laser Cannon. Bowgun deals mediocre damage, Bazooka can one-shot Savior crystals, Laser Cannon is very useful against the Savior. Avoid using the weapon, unless the situation arises.

  186.
  187. Let's start with Exceeds.
  188.
  189. Exceed is a move that can be used as Nero to charge up to 3 next sword attacks. Exceed changes the properties of that hit (makes more damage, causes more knockback, etc.), but we're gonna use that to amplify our DPS tremendously, that's why practicing the Exceeds is very important in a run. The Red Queen starts out with only the option of using Level 1 moves even if more than one level is saved up but by purchasing Exceed 2 and Exceed 3, Nero will automatically use two or three levels respectively for even more powerful version (EX) of special moves. Even though Nero can always build his Exceed Gauge up to level 3, he cannot use all three levels at one time with only Exceed 1, which he begins the game with.
  190.
  191. There's three ways you can get Exceed:
  192. 1) Manual - Hold Exceed button, till the bar on your left side of the HUD stops moving, then do it 2 more times to get 1EX Bar.
  193. 2) Attack - Pressing Exceed button after the attack connects always gives you 1EX Bar.
  194. 3) MAX-Act - Pressting Exceed button in 1-6 frames after the hit connects will give you 3EX bars instantly.
  195.
  196. The timing is different on every move. Generally it's a fixed amount of time after contact is made. However some attacks such as High Roller have a large hit stop that you need to wait through first.
  197.
  198. The most stable moves to get MAX-Act are 1st hit of Combo A, Split, Streak and 1st hit of Air Combo.
  199. You can check this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVoWqM7lhlo or this text guide: http://berserkersblog.blogspot.ru/2008/02/dmc4-exceed-system-mini-guide.html to find your way of putting the Exceeds and MAX-Acts.
  200. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
  201. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
  202.
  203. Distortion, at the other hand, is a very important technique. derVadok explains it on his 9 years old video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8hx5licmrM , and i still believe that's the best source for the information about that trick.
  204.
  205. Long story short: If you press DT just before your hit connects to the enemy, the game will deal the damage from both human and DT.
  206. You can use Distortion on every single hit in Dante's arsenal, but the most efficent ones are Real Impact and Straight. These two will instagib ~every single enemy in Devil Hunter (main category).
  207.
  208. Therefore, learning the DRI is a pretty important part of learning the Dante's section of the game.
  209. Personally, i'm using the soundcue to turn on my DT. Since Real Impact is a 3-hit move, i press my DT in between 2nd and 3rd hit, and i get the optimal damage against every single entity in the game.
  210.

  214.
  215. Skips in DMC4:SE are something that's caused my mechanical input, since the game doesn't allow us (as of 01.04.2018) to go out of bounds or make some tricks w/ the game logic. All skips that we're doing during the game are relatively easy to make, and i think i did a very useful Skip tutorial, that you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbHwW4xVczc .
  216.
  217. But for those who don't want to spend 5 minutes to watch extremely detailed skip explanations, i'll do a quick skip explanation. Please note, that this doesn't include Vergil or Lady/Trish skips, because i'm mainly focusing on the other category. The fact that i know NG+ skips doesn't make me wanna try and spread bad info about their viability in NG.
  218.
  219. Before we start, let me explain what Slide means.
  220. Slide is a state, where the character is flying in an downwards arc in a very high speed. You can enter this state if you'll use Stinger, Shotgun Stinger (GS4) or Streak against the ledge. During the Slide, your forward momentum is locked (you can't turn somewhere etc, you'll always "fly" forward), but you can cancel the fall into any attack (such as Calibur, Fireworks), movement ability (Air Hike, Sky Star) or DT (Nero only).
  221.
  222. Therefore, let's start.
  223.
  224. 1) M3 Skip, located in Torture Chamber
  225. Requirements: NG - Chargeshot, Streak. NG+ - Calibur + Air Hike
  226.
  227. + NG (Optimized): Step on the button and briefly lock-on to the lantern. You have to get Perform a Slide against it, slide till the half of the room and then execute following inputs - Hold Left, hit Melee once, release Left, release CS1 and start charging it again, hit Melee. Repeat till you'll be close to the ledge. Tapping Melee once you'll be close to the wall increases the chances you'll get the skip. Jump off the wall and proceed further.
  228. + NG (Optimized v2): Same inputs, but this time, Hold Right. You'll end up on a platform at the left side, and you'll have to do 3 Snatches to proceed. Use this, if you're not sure about the method above.
  229. + NG (Casual): Proceed the platforming section as usual. At the last plaftorm, right after grabbing the first lantern, switch the targets and quickly grab again. This method is inconsistent, and i'm not sure if you REALLY want to do save 0.3 seconds.
  230. + NG+ (Optimized): Slide off the platform. You have to be a bit to the left side from the center, hold Right, tap Melee once, and cancel that Melee into Calibur. If needed, use Air Hike.
  231.
  232. 2) M4 Gyroblade Glitch (technically a skip), located in Large Hall.
  233. Requirements: None
  234.
  235. + NG/NG+: Instead of going straight towards the Kitchen, take one of the Gyroblades in the center of the room. Use them to break the seal in the left side of the hall. After breaking the seal, take the "new" Gyroblade and place it inside the seals at the center. Then, go to Kitchen, where the final Gyroblade is located. After you'll return to the Large Hall, you'll find that there's 3 Gyroblades standing at their places, instead of two.
  236.
  237. 3) M7 Tri-Skip, located in Ruined Church and Ruined Valley.
  238. Requirements: Air Hike, Calibur. Optional: Roulette Spin, Streak.
  239.
  240. Button Skip
  241. + NG+: EX3 High Roller into Calibur or Air Hike.
  242. + NG: Jump, Air Hike into Calibur.
  243.
  244. Plates Skip
  245. + NG+: Slide off the corner of the ledge (not the plates, you can't slide off them), EX3 High Roller into Air Hike.
  246. + NG (Optimized): After activation, count down 5 plates, step from the 5th one, Jump, hold Forward and use Air Hike. Calibur to the platform.
  247. + NG (Backup): If you fall down from the plates, walk a bit forward, and you'll notice the ladder. Stick to the first column (add the screen here), turn around, Jump - Air Hike - Calibur.
  248.
  249. Valley Skip
  250. + NG+: Slide off the platform, Calibur and Air Hike to the end.
  251. + NG(Optimized): Turn on the plates, drop down after 2nd plate, Calibur and Air Hike
  252. + NG(Meka): Slide off the platform, Roulette Spin, Reset the camera, Calibur, Air Hike.
  253.
  254. 4) M10 Key of Chronus Skip, located in Security Corridor
  255. Requirements: Exceed 3, Roulette Spin, Calibur, Air Hike
  256.
  257. + NG(Meka): Align yourself to the right side of the platform. Make sure that Nero actually looks at the right side of the giantic blade. Buffer CS, and then do these inputs: EX3 Highroller, Calibur, Hold backwards and tap Melee once, release CS and start charging again. Do it 2(or 3) times, use Air Hike. Adjust your angle towards the small platform, and continue Melee-CS cycle, till you'll land.
  258.
  259. 5) M11 Mephisto Skip, located in Advent Chamber
  260. Requirements: Exceed 3, Roulette Spin, Calibur, Air Hike
  261.
  262. + NG: Stick with the left side of the bricks on the ladder, you need to stand in between first 2 steps (include the screen). Perform EX3 High Roller, Roulette Spin, cancel the spin at the very top point with Air Hike, then input another Roulette Spin. Finish the skip with Calibur input.
  263.
  264. 6) M12 Elevator Skip, located in Experimental Disposal
  265. Requirements: Stinger, Trickster lvl3, >3 DT Bars, Air Hike
  266.
  267. + NG: Simple skip. Slide off the ledge with Stinger, use DT mid-air (i turn on DT right after Stinger input), 2x Air Hike, 2x Sky Star. Don't forget to turn off DT when you'll land!
  268.
  269. 7) M15 Button Skip, located in Torture Chamber
  270. Requirements: Trickster lvl3, >3 DT Bars, Air Hike
  271.
  272. +NG: Very precise, but easy to perform. Turn on DT before your first jump. Come close to the edge of the ledge, Hold Forward, 2x Jump, 2x Sky Star. You have to get between the columns. If something blocks you, then you've jumped too early / not enough height.

  277.
  278. Now, here comes the optimization part.
  279.
  280. I call cycle a specific input, that can help you clear the specific enemy the fastest way possible. Note, that current cycles can change, and doesn't reflect "the way you should play the game". Use these as a reference, to optimize your fights as much as you want them to be.
  281.
  282. I - Scarecrow(Arm)

  327. 3) Prop -> (Gilgamesh) Distorted Just Straight
  328. 4) Prop -> (Gilgamesh) Real Impact (use this if Prop launched the enemy in the air, otherwise the attack will whiff)
  329.
  330. VI - Chimaera
  331.
  332. Nero:
  333. 1) Buster
  334.

  349. 4) Good ol' Stinger spam.
  350.
  351. VIII - Faust / Mephisto
  352.
  353. Nero:
  354. 1) Charge Shot 3 (removes the cloak of the Faust, removes half of the cloak against Mephisto) -> EXHighRoller -> Air 1-2-3 / Buster
  355. 2) After removing the cloak, Buster, High Roller, Roulette Spin
  356. 3) After removing the cloak, DT Buster.
  357.
  358. Dante:
  359. 1) (Ebony/Ivory, Fausts) Jump close to the Fausts, and deplete your Charge Shot. If done correctly, they'll lose the cloak. After removing the cloak, hold the opposite movement direction and use Prop. Lock-On to the Faust and use Shredder. Finish the enemy off with 1-2-Stinger combo.
  360. 2) (Coyotte, Mephistos) Jump close to the Mephisto, and deplete Charge Shot. Otherwise, use 2 Fireworks in a point-blank range. JC CS works aswell. After removing the cloak, perform (Gilgamesh) Real Impact with 1-2T-3D Distortion.
  361.
  362. IX - Blitz
  363.
  364. Nero: N/A
  365. Dante: Holy Water. Use it the moment the enemy appears, as it hits him even during his invul phase. Finish the enemy with any weapon.
  366.
  367. X - Alto Angelo
  368.
  369. Nero:
  370. 1) CS3 in the back.

  372. 3) Buster, EX High Roller, Air 1-2-3.
  373.

  376. 2) (Rebellion) Prop / High Time - (Gilgamesh) Just Straight
  377.
  378. XI - Bianco Angelo
  379.
  380. Nero:
  381. 1) Orb: Deflect the orb with a timed CS3, EXStreak.
  382. 2) No Orb: CS3 -> DT -> Air Buster. The rest of the fight is RNG.
  383.
  384. Dante:
  385. 1) Orb: Deflect the ball with DT Prop.
  386. 2) No Orb: (Rebellion) DT Dance Macabre, Distort the last hit (from Demon to Human) -> (Rebellion) Dance Macabre, Distort the last hit (from Human to Demon)
  387.
  388. XII - Mega Scarecrow
  389.
  390. Nero: N/A

  397.
  398. So. There's two(third one is being tested) main routes in this game. And i'm gonna touch(gachiGASM) then both.
  399.
  400. Route #1 - Skye Veran's one.
  401. Explanation: This route is balanced one, relies on getting specific amount of stuff in M4 to get quick Bael, resulting a free 1-cycle Bael and more damage options during the missions.
  402. Purchases(done after finishing the mission, so m1 = bought after completing m1):
  403.
  404. M1 - CS1, Speed, Split (No Damage)
  405. M2 - CS3 (No Damage)
  406. M3 - Calibur, Roulette Spin
  407. M4 - Snatch 2, Streak
  408. M5 - Air Hike
  409. M6 - Trigger Heart, 4 Purple Orbs
  410. M7 - Showdown
  411. M8 - Exceed 2, Exceed 3, MAX-Act
  412. M9 - N/A
  413. M10 - N/A
  414. M11 - TS3, SW4, Stinger + Stinger 2, Chargeshot 1(Ebony/Ivory), Trigger Heart, GMO, Speed, Air Hike + 2 HW's
  415. M12 - Enemy Step
  416. M13 - N/A
  417. M14 - N/A
  418. M15 - N/A
  419. M16 - Pandora: Revenge and Hatred, Pin-Up (Lucifer)
  420. M17 - N/A
  421. M18 - Maximum Bet, Showdown, Enemy Step
  422. M19 - N/A
  423. M20 - N/A
  424.
  425. You should use this route when you're learning this game, because it's kinda easy to follow, and there's literally no way you'll ever fuck up this one.
  426.
  427. PROs: Easy Bael stagger with Calibur, more Air options, good for learning
  428. CONs: You earn less orbs in general, the route making your run extremely dependant on good cycle in M4. Hence, if you fail 1-cycle in M4, this route gets worse.
  429.
  430. Route #2 - Mekarazium's. greed strat.
  431. Explanation: This route relies on getting Get More Orbs as early as possible, sacrificing the reliable 1-cycle in M4 and major Air options in favor of getting more Proud Souls, due to getting more Red Orbs, hence, Greed strat.
  432. Purchases(done after finishing the mission, so m1 = bought after completing m1):
  433.
  434. M1 - CS1, Speed (No Damage)
  435. M2 - CS3, Streak (No Damage)
  436. M3 - Get More Orbs (No Damage)
  437. M4 - Split, Air Hike (No Damage)
  438. M5 - N/A
  439. M6 - Calibur, Trigger Heart, Roulette Spin, 4 Purple Orbs
  440. M7 - Showdown (No Damage)
  441. M8 - Exceed 2, Exceed 3, MAX-Act (No Damage)
  442. M9 - N/A
  443. M10 - N/A
  444. M11 - TS3, SW4, CS1 for both E/I and Coyotte, Stinger 1 and Stinger 2, GMO, Trigger Heart, Enemy Step, Speed, Air Hike +2 HW's.
  445. M12 - N/A
  446. M13 - N/A
  447. M14 - N/A
  448. M15 - N/A
  449. M16 - Pandora: Revenge and Hatred, Pin-Up (Lucifer)
  450. M17 - N/A
  451. M18 - Maximum Bet, Showdown, Enemy Step
  452. M19 - N/A
  453. M20 - N/A
  454.
  455. PRO's: 1 extra HW at the end of M19, more Proud Souls due to higher Orb ratings
  456. CON's: Not enough damage early compared to Skyes route, a lot more No Damage segments, relies on getting good RNG in the first 4 missions.
  457.
  458. Route #3 - Balanced.
  459. Explanation: Based on the analysis of ~60 finished runs, done by Skye Veran, PvtCb, Mekarazium and Yudhveer.
  460. Purchases(done after finishing the mission, so m1 = bought after completing m1):
  461.
  462. M1 - CS1, Speed (No Damage)
  463. M2 - CS3, Streak (No Damage)
  464. M3 - Roulette Spin, Split, Snatch 2 (No Damage) / Roulette Spin, Split (Get Hit)
  465. M4 - Air Hike (No Damage) / Calibur, Snatch 2 (Get Hit)
  466. M5 - Nothing / Air Hike (if you got hit in M4)
  467. M6 - Sell Split, Buy Calibur, Trigger Heart, 4 Purple Orbs
  468. M7 - Sell Calibur, Roulette Spin, Buy Showdown.
  469. M8 - Sell Showdown, Buy (mandatory) Split, Exceed 2+3. (optional) Buy MAX-Act and(or, if you have no money for MAX-Act) Get More Orbs.
  470. M9 - Sell Split, get Roulette Spin and Calibur.
  471. M10 - Nothing.
  472. M11 - Trickster 3, Sword Master 4, ChargeShot 1 for Ebony/Ivory, Stinger 1+2, Trigger Heart, Get More Orbs, Speed, Air Hike. (optional) Enemy Step. Buy 2x Holy Water.
  473. M12 - Enemy Step, if you didn't buy it last time.
  474. M13 - Nothing
  475. M14 - 2x Holy Water
  476. M15 - Nothing
  477. M16 - Pandora: Revenge, Pandora: Hatred, Lucifer: Pin-Up
  478. M17 - Nothing
  479. M18 - Maximum Bet, Showdown, Enemy Step, one Devil Star S+L
  480. M19 - Holy Water
  481. M20 - Nothing
  482.
  483. PRO's: Combines the best decisions from the routes, should be faster than both of the strats above (not enough data), easy to learn
  484. CON's: Relies on knowing the advanced strategies, in case if something will go wrong.
  485.

  489.
  490. IMPORTANT: SUPER TRAINER REQUIRES YOU TO DISABLE ANTIVIRUS ON DOWNLOAD.
  491.
  492. hg_alice: Note that the Steam_Apps.dll you must rename is 233KB! The other one that will help the game run is found in the March Fix.
  493. If you had a config prior to installing DMC4: SE (Meaning you played it as is) I will recommend deleting it.
  494. WITH REGARDS TO ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE: They WILL block the Super Trainer .exe application. I turned off my scanning and firewall to facilitate the installation process. Super Trainer will (mistakenly) be recognised as a Trojan. That should be it.
  495. For reference, my machine is an ASUS X550J running Windows 8.1 64bit with an Intel Core i7-4710HQ, 8GB RAM, with a Nvidia GEFORCE GTX850M
  496. So provided you meet minimum to recommended specs for DMC4: SE it will definitely run (c)
  497.
  498. Tools for practice:
  499. 1) 100% Save for DMC4:SE - https://www.speedrun.com/saves/CAPCOM_4u8py.rar
  500. Includes Vergil and Lady/Trish progress. Always use the 100% save for practice, sell the unnecessary abilities and start doing the stuff. Place the savefile in \Documents\CAPCOM\DEVILMAYCRY4SPECIALEDITION folder.
  501. 2) Cheat Engine table - https://www.speedrun.com/tools/DMC4SE-IW_zubx8.rar
  502. Allows you to freeze the enemies HP, modify the spawn orders and play with the coordinates. Useful stuff for learning / trying something new. Use CE 6.5 or higher to run.
  503. 3) SuperTrainer - http://s1.zetaboards.com/InfernalWorks/topic/5846467/1/
  504. 4) Any non-WR run that has better time than yours.
  505.
  506. Where to practice (w/ STv9):
  507. a) Exceeds: Spawn Scarecrow, F5.
  508. b) Bosses: M19, practice 10 minutes each cycle without getting hit, then reduce their HP to 10% and do the same
  509. c) Distortion/Just Charges: Turn on "Show Health in Red Orbs", Training Mode, load M17, get back to Berial arena, spawn Agnus and freeze him.
  510. d) Skips: Area Jump, Cheat Engine table with coordinates.
  511. e) JC's: GMD Boss Rush. Berial for JC's, Credo for general tempo practice.
  512.
  513. Practice breakdown:
  514. 1) Choose the mission. Since the full run is just a bunch of IL's, you can easily choose what exactly do you want to practice.
  515.
  516. 2) Watch your last PB. Get a Pastebin/GDoc/Notepad, and write any good things you think you've done in the segment.
  517.
  518. 2.1) Pay attention to your movement, your Exceed/Just Frame timings, your Proud Souls / Red Orbs amount.
  519. 2.2) Next step, is to pay attention to the enemies pattern. By learning and observing the enemy patterns, the major part of your mistakes will most likely disappear.
  520. 2.3) Combine both, and try to find a solution that would fit for you.
  521. 2.4) Just in case, learn to mash through the menus. It could save you up to ~10 seconds.
  522.
  523. 3) Do the same with your mistakes.
  524. 3.1) Mistake = huge timeloss, based on the missed cycle / missed input / failed skip / lack of practice / RNG
  525. 3.2) Mistakes are the reason you're improving. Making a lot of mistakes doesn't mean you're bad at the game. It's exactly the opposite.
  526. 3.3) Every DMC4:SE runner fucks up somewhere.
  527.
  528. 4) Go to the mission you want to practice.
  529. 4.1) First off, i would recommend practicing M7, M11 and M12 skips. These ones are mandatory. If you've just started learning the game, it's literally the best way to "secure" the run. Don't start your new "day" without practicing and perfecting these 3 skips. After you've done practicing these three, add M3, M10 and M15 ones to this list, and practice all of these, until you'll get them 1st try.
  530.
  531. 4.2) Then, start practicing the bossfights.
  532.
  533. 4.2.1) Berial
  534. 4.2.1.1) One of the challenges that i would recommend is to survive 10 minutes against him, without being damaged. 5 minutes in 1st phase, drop his HP to 3-4 bars, and then survive another 5. This will let you understand the way this boss works, ultimately giving you a control in this fight.
  535. 4.2.1.2) Personally, i like to perform a strat "by feel", which consists of making a long jump towards Berial's face, and dropping down in a "chest" zone. Practicing this jump / getting a visual cue can help you getting
  536. 4.2.1.3) For starters, use Buster against this boss twice(but please, don't do it instantly, wait for the boss to start falling down).
  537. Not using 2nd Buster is faster, but you can be Jebaited by Berial if you'll get super greedy, ending your run.
  538.
  539. 4.2.2) Bael
  540. 4.2.2.1) This boss is the most cancerous boss in the game. Honestly, fuck this boss.
  541. 4.2.2.2) Rusalka's cycle - (Streak for extra mobility), 1-2-3, Charge Shot 3, (Streak and 1-2-3 at the start of the bossfight) Buster.
  542. 4.2.2.3) You can get 5 openers in this fight.
  543. * Frost Breath - Perfect one.
  544. * Belly Jump - Good one.
  545. * AFK - Depends on the mood.
  546. * Icicles barrage - Bad one.
  547. * Boss goes back - Worst one.
  548. Every opener can either give you a good cycle, or a bad one. The easiest to get a "good Bael cycle" is, obviously, FB. Good cycle is basically staggering the boss BEFORE it goes peek-a-boo. Bad cycle - you fucked up the good one. Easy.
  549.
  550. 4.2.3) Echidna I
  551. 4.2.3.1) This fight is all about timings. Exceed ones being the most important ones.
  552. 4.2.3.2) If Echidna switches her form to "Dragon" one, then you did something wrong.
  553. 4.2.3.3) As Nero, mash Exceed button in Buster. As Dante, don't hesitate, and use that Holy Water if you think you're late.
  554. 4.2.3.4) It's possible to kill this boss in 1 cycle with both characters.
  555.
  556. 4.2.4) Credo
  557. 4.2.4.1) 4SE cycle relies on spamming Showdown against Credo. Vanilla relies on spamming CS3 and baiting Credo for his 4 hit combos, and then beating him mid-air. Combine both while learning the game, and slowly start using Showdown strat.
  558. 4.2.4.2) Credo likes to throw spears. Even if you start the Showdown cycle properly, he still has a lot of time to throw the spear at your face.
  559. 4.2.4.3) Seek for an opportunity to make the Showdown a reality. Don't rush, and don't hold yourself back.
  560.
  561. 4.2.5) Agnus I(Window) and Agnus II(Bug)
  562. 4.2.5.1) Agnus I can easily give +20 seconds, if not more, because RNG. Air Hike helps tremendously in that section.
  563. 4.2.5.2) You have a plenty of time to turn on DT after you CS3 him the first time.
  564. 4.2.5.3) Stunning Agnus works a bit different than the other bosses, and because of that, it's possible to stunlock him. Works only for Dante.
  565. 4.2.5.4) Don't try to attack him when he's doing the Spinning attack, unless you're playing Dante.
  566. 4.2.5.5) Stick with Roulette Spin and 1-2-3, try not to hit him on the ground.
  567. 4.2.5.6) When he's recovering, he pushes you away from himself if you're standing on the ground. But it has no effect, if you're mid-air.
  568.
  569. 4.2.6) Dante
  570. 4.2.6.1) Two ways to fight Dante. First one is based off using DT Air Buster, second one is based on using your Blue Rose to close the distance, Bustering him in a right moment.
  571. 4.2.6.2) The boss is kinda random. Keep your distance to avoid getting combo'd by Dante.
  572. 4.2.6.3) Usually, Dante follows this cycle - Trickster - Gunslinger - Royal Guard - Sword Master.
  573. 4.2.6.4) When in Royal Guard, Dante can be easily Snatched.
  574. 4.2.6.5) Sword Master gives Dante an opportunity to start a very long combo (around 7-10 sec. long).
  575. 4.2.6.6) If you'll stay too far from Dante, he will use one of the two Tutorial attacks (Ebony/Ivory AoE attacks)
  576.
  577. 4.2.7) Sanctus
  578. 4.2.7.1) Sanctus won't stop moving, until the distance between you and him is huge. If he's making any attack, that means that the distance is just enough.
  579. 4.2.7.2) EX3 Calibur won't break his shield. Avoid using CS3 before you'll break it.
  580. 4.2.7.3) When Sanctus HP is < 4 bars, the cutscene will start. Right after the cutscene ends, you'll be put at the center of the arena, with Savior trying to hit you. You can parry this attack with a precise Buster prompt. The setup that you can do, is to walk forward for roughly 2-3 steps, tap left, and Buster.
  581. 4.2.7.4) You'll have ~8-12 seconds before Sanctus regains his shield.
  582.
  583. 4.2.8) Echidna II
  584. 4.2.8.1) Remember to JC your Aerial Rave attacks to cancel the backswing animation.
  585. 4.2.8.2) Use DT the same time you input Prop, maybe you'll get some Distorted hits => more chances to stagger the boss.
  586. 4.2.8.3) Although using Holy Water at the start of the fight gives you a better chances for a good cycle, i use it after the Flower-part, since, if fight was done correctly, Echidna will have around 2.5-3 HP Bars, and HW deals ~2.5.
  587. 4.2.8.4) In all fights against Echidna, you have to jump at the top of her. To do that, you have to perform Jump and Air Hike in a very precise manner. Try doing that the moment she barely touched the ground with her tail.
  588. 4.2.8.5) Point-blank Charge Shot 1 on Coyotte against her head (Dragon form) forces her to go back to her "neutral" form. Might be hard to do.
  589. 4.2.8.6) Use Ebony/Ivory to stay in the air, in case if she decides to attack in Flower form.
  590.
  591. 4.2.9) Dagon
  592. 4.2.9.1) Learn to Distort your hits.
  593.
  594. 4.2.10) Agnus 3
  595. 4.2.10.1) RNG fiesta.
  596. 4.2.10.2) Can be stunlocked with a very hard and unsafe cycle.
  597. 4.2.10.3) Using DRI is unreliable, unless you setup him first.
  598. 4.2.10.4) Jump Cancelling is essential in this fight.
  599.
  600. 4.2.11) Savior
  601. 4.2.11.1) Learn to Distort your hits.
  602. 4.2.11.2) This fight is always the same, just learn the cycle.
  603.
  604. 4.2.12) Sanctus Diabolica
  605. 4.2.12.1) Same as Credo. There's a Showdown cycle that you can perform, but if you're learning the game, i would recommend doing Roulette Spin spam.
