  4. The December 2018 NPD report is in, and it shows Nintendo Switch overtaking PlayStation 4 as the best-selling console of 2018 in the United States.
  5.
  6. Nintendo Switch has reached the highest annual sales (both in dollar sales and units sold) for any hardware platform since PS4 broke the previous record in 2015. Throughout the year, NPD has reported PS4 as the best-selling console of 2018, though in November Nintendo beat it out for a single month. It appears Switch’s holiday success snowballed and ultimately put it above PS4 in the U.S. for 2018.
  7.
  8. Nintendo Switch also notably generated the highest hardware dollar sales for a single platform in December since Wii set the previous record in December 2009, and hit the highest unit sales for a single platform since December 2010. After its first year on the market, Nintendo reportedly doubled Switch production.

  10. Hardware spending in 2018 is up 8 percent across the board, reaching $5.1 billion. Switch, PS4 and Xbox One all saw year-on-year growth in overall sales. Ultimately, console hardware sales reached its highest annual totals in the last ten years.

  12. In October 2018, Nintendo announced Switch had sold over 22 million units. At that time, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild had sold nearly 10.3 million units, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe surpassed 11 million units and Super Mario Odyssey flew past 12 million units.
  13.
  14. Software sales have also done exceptionally well in 2018, with Red Dead Redemption 2 beating out Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 as the best-selling game of 2018. Despite this, it’s the Switch exclusive Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that became the best-selling game of December 2018 in the U.S.
