  7. COMMENTS IN BRACKETS [] IS WHAT THE PLAYER IS DOING OR WHERE THEY ARE
  8.
  9. -----------------------------------------
  10.
  11. So, a mass of black eyes sets a trap, and you eagerly run right into it, without delay.
  12.
  13. Really, you should hold yourself to a higher standard.
  14.
  15. {What? Who are you?}
  16.
  17. I could give you the accounts of my dynasty, to every accomplishment in my somewhat brief life.
  18.
  19. But it wouldn't bring you any closer to knowing who we were. But know this, your brethren above founded their civilizations on the ruins of ours.
  20.
  21. {Direnni?}
  22.
  23. I see that current nomenclature hasn't changed much.
  24.
  25. Now, onto your little errand - it called you with the promise of riches, correct? I'm sure you've taken your fill from these halls already.
  26.
  27. But you sense a far grander reward, something that material riches cannot satisfy. With only the god's having the power to grant.
  28.
  29. Well I hate to be the messenger, but that promise will not bear fruit. A truth we were too slow to realize ourselves.
  30.
  31. Deception is all that thing knows.
  32.
  33. {Just point me to him}
  34.
  35. Him? Ah, just a word to bespeak the society above. Poor patriachal thing.
  36.
  37. At the end of this hall is the key to unsealing the passage between this world and theirs. A machine fashioned from the technologies of the far east.
  38.
  39. I wonder if they still linger, or if that volcano took them all. Another mystery.
  40.
  41. {Why are you helping me?}
  42.
  43. To put an end to its prying gaze, every once in a while it will send eyes to scour these halls in search of our most guarded knowledge.
  44.
  45. And I believe, to free itself onto your world, permanently. But with my intellect and your, ummm, brawn - that wont happen.
  46.
  47. {Grim news, that prince needs me to collect your soul, preferably in the way of your death.}
  48.
  49. And you're his messenger of death?
  50.
  51. And you're the courier?
  52.
  53. {Keen observation [Attack]}
  54.
  55. Not by your hands...
  56.
  57. Ha, here's a reminder to why the Direnni were feared..
  58.
  59.
  60. {If there's any other way, then let me hear it.}
  61.
  62. We are blessd with intelligence so that binary choices can become many.
  63.
  64. You may bark "Fallacy!", at what I propose, but hear me out. We bring that entity a soul in my image, even with my scent.
  65.
  66. Aha, but it will not be mine! Simple, but genius, right?
  67.
  68. {You wish to deceive a god of knowledge in his own realm?}
  69.
  70. And there's the bark. Do you think I told you to light these fires for my amusement? They blaze for the liminal barrier that surrounds us.
  71.
  72. This barrier shields and shrouds us to that beings eyes, what is discussed here is for our ears only.
  73.
  74. Now its only assurance of your loyalty is a word, as you see, most of these gods proclaim great power and omniscience.
  75.
  76. But what they lack, is empathy. They cannot grasp the depths us mortals would delve to maintain a lie.
  77.
  78. I must also tell you, whether it's of any concern, that he's not after my soul for its own sake. He lusts for a secret that can only be gleaned with the mind of my kind.
  79.
  80. {Why not just tell him this "secret" and be done with it.}
  81.
  82. And give it all the power? What's to be gained from that? Knowledge has value, value that can be traded for spoils beyond your fickles thoughts.
  83.
  84. This being, Ven is it? Has been hounding for our secrets for a good millenia or more. The sheer patience of that thing. Maybe time really is of no consequence to a god.
  85.
  86. Ha! Secrets are a currency all of their own, do you know how much power comes with knowledge that only you hold? Even beyond our temporal states this affair still maintains its salience.
  87.
  88. {I see even death hasn't brought you any humility, what do you propose then?}
  89.
  90. A black soul gem. Indistinguishable from any other, with only an arcane aura the indicator of my soul.
  91.
  92. It'll be none the wiser, a glutton as it is, only desiring the next meal without a care for taste.
  93.
  94. {Did you know of the "Last Ayleid King?"}
  95.
  96. Laloriaran? That twisted despot? Why do you evoke such a name?
  97.
  98. The last Ayleid king? A good number of them laid could claim to that.
  99.
  100. Oh, as a Moniker? Only one had the hubris.. Laloriaran. That's one person you'd never want to be alone with.
  101.
  102. {He tried to invade Nirn and I had to defeat him [Tell story]}
  103.
  104. That could have been quite the heroic tale, you know, without the guts and torture. Yet no story of the "last king" would be complete without that.
  105.
  106. Ask any of my kin and they would have told you the same of him, and none would be surprised that he ended up the way he did. More a wild flame to cover our retreat than an ally.
  107.
  108. We even feared that he'd turn his attention to us had he prevailed against Allesia. Such was his desire for blood.
  109.
  110. We could only grasp the situation at the frontline through word of our scouts. And sometimes, they failed to return at all. We humoured ourselves in thinking the Nord's had taken them.
  111.
  112. But we could never be certain, as the "last king" was keen to remind us.
  113.
  114. {What else did you do incase he did betray you?}
  115.
  116. Engineers brought vast diaromas showing what could be the barrier to protect us from Allesia's encroach. They were set to begin construction soon after.
  117.
  118. However, with the arrival of the "last king", modifcations were made. The barrier was segmented across the ridges of the eastern Hegemony. They blinded with indigo flame, towards the clouds, wide enough to block any armies crossing the ravines.
  119.
  120. {I think the Bretons may still use them. They cover a city just to the south of here}
  121.
  122. It has been many, many years since they were first lit. I assume they have waned to a light blue?
  123.
  124. {Yes, exactly}
  125.
  126. Ha, imagine that. Our children, still in need of guidance. And is the barrier still needed?
  127.
  128. {They claim that it protects from a plague that ravages the land}
  129.
  130. If the plague is of an arcane nature, then I applause them for their intuition. Many within the Hegemony had the very same suspicion, that the "end days" would bring both pestilence and ruin.
  131.
  132. Didn't see much pestilence, but we got more than enough ruin.
  133.
  134. {Why was he brought over?}
  135.
  136. The Allesians were making headway into the heart of our people, there could be no reasoning with them. After having seen their slaughter of the Ayleids..
  137.
  138. We were desperate.
  139.
  140. Then he appeared, boasting a modest army - he was all that came from Allesia's conquest. Understandable, we despaired.
  141.
  142. Yet few as they were, they had demostrated remarkable proficiency in spellweaving. Offensive magics we'd never seen.
  143.
  144. Even one of theirs could cut down scores of men, so surely they could turn the tide and push Allesia back to the heartland.
  145.
  146. For the "Last Kings" service, his embassy was built in the image of his home. Nenalata proxy. Such morbid tales of its construction.
  147.
  148. But that wasn't for the Direnni to suffer, for we had servants, and the ayleid had theirs.
  149.
  150.
  151. We were in desperate need of allies against the allesians who marched from the east, that king had appeared out of nowhere and made himself available with his sizable force.
  152.
  153. We would be foolish to send him the other way, but knowing how poisonous the allegiance was and the measures we put up in case he turned rogue - i'm not sure it was worth it.
  154.
  155. He said he would act on the frontline if we just built him an embassy, and nenalata proxy was constructed. Deep beneath the frontiers of the hegemon, I'm not sure if it's still standing.
  156.
  157. {How did your empire become so powerful?}
  158.
  159. What is the value of a hill?
  160.
  161. {What? I don't know?}
  162.
  163. Whatever you want it to be - a sword also helps in that decision, mind you.
  164.
  165. The Direnni were traders first and foremost, trading within and without. Through other lands and, as you've seen, other worlds.
  166.
  167. Servants, or "Bretons" to you, hauled from the earth this value. Raw and without claim. We Direnni then mystified this raw thing and made it valued.
  168.
  169. Oh of course, there is value in wood for the fires and food for our bellies. But what immediate value is there in gold and silver?
  170.
  171. Why should a plot of land belong to one when stakes are planted? Is it through word?
  172.
  173. Or force?
  174.
  175. And so value came to be made as an ultimate truth to every being on this continent. And the Dirreni reigned over it all.
  176.
  177. {What was your trade in other worlds?}
  178.
  179. The trickiest clients to tell the truth. One moment a deal was certain, the next our merchant is running for the rift in pure terror.
  180.
  181. See, with mortal men and women, a bargain comes into play, informed by the brevity of our lives. But to the immortal beings of the other worlds. They don't concern themselves over one time offers or some base need that must be sated.
  182.
  183. So instead of diamonds, we bring the abstract. Some intangible thing that they lust for. You may guess what our most common currency among them was.
  184.
  185. That was rhetorical, Sorry, I love hearing myself speak. But it was souls. Souls that they could entertain to their hearts content.
  186.
  187. {Whose souls?}
  188.
  189. Not ours ofcourse! Perish the thought. We had more than enough servants who were more than willing to make their masters happy. So in they went, into those black crystals.
  190.
  191. And whenever souls did not suffice, new practices in the arcane were revealed. They thought it would give them a leg up in their great game.
  192.
  193. But we enraged many a vengeful god when they discovered we were providing both ends of their wars. As you can imagine.
  194.
  195.
  196.
  197.
  198. Trade was the name of the game, and we engaged in trade like no other. Not only of the temporal but pricing very concepts and abstractions themselves to be sold off to the highest bidder.
  199.
  200. And these bidders weren't relegated to us fleshy mortals, we had dealt with daedra, aedra and all those in the cosmos. Great gates constructed by our finest minds had us forge roads to distant realms.
  201.
  202. We brought back items that could elevate the senses to transcendental heights, blowing any worldly substance out by a huge margin.
  203.
  204. {So how did such a powerful empire cease to be? There's no trace of living direnni around}
  205.
  206. Bah, ignorant! The Dirreni founded this land, we are the bedrock for all future races that dwell above.
  207.
  208. The debased among my ilk sired the mongrels you've come to know as "Bretons". Those of pure blood still exist, just not in any tangible sense.
  209.
  210. A garden of wordly delights was found, somewhere among the great tower. A realm of the truly content.
  211.
  212. Hmmmm, I've just told you something quite valuable, didn't I? And you never offered anything in return.
  213.
  214. Let all of those above know, none will ever have the mental fortitue to endure Adamantia's design and reach our secret.
  215.
  216. Not in a million years!
  217.
  218.
  219.
  220. Oh we are, just not in the very form we are now and diluted into the bastard mix that you know now as Bretons. The purebred direnni of yesteryear are still kicking, just not in this world.
  221.
  222. They had found their own heaven through an aperture opened within the Adamantia tower, a place of unreal luxury and relaxation.
  223.
  224. And so all the direnni's followed and had not looked back since, the gate is still said to be opened, though seeing the gate and traversing is such an incredibly complicated process that you mortals would need another 1000 cycles to breach it.
  225.
  226. {Why didn't you go there as well?}
  227.
  228. I am of a higher race, I can find peace in being alone. I know you cannot.
  229.
  230. I was never one for utopias, I liked to feel grounded. That my actions have consequences, action - reaction.
  231.
  232. Besides, there is a small entourage of my peers scattered throughout the city.
  233.
  234. {I've slain them}
  235.
  236. Ha, what exactly did you slay? Wisps? They'll be back in short time.
  237.
  238. And I'd strongly advise against doing that again if you don't want that "prince" getting loose. Because it wont be sated on our secrets, it'll too come for yours.
  239.
  240. Trust me, you don't want that thing in your mind.
  241.
  242.
  243. Not even I could survive that experience.
  244.
  245.
  246. I had wanted to govern over this city by myself even in my corporeal form, there's a sense of comfort knowing you're alone.
  247.
  248. Well, besides the tiny entourage that you've probably encountered above. Complete isolation can drive any mad.
  249.
  250. And the fact that this pernicious daedric prince, gluttonous for knowledge needs to be overseen and repelled. We don't know the consequences of him coming into this realm.
  251.
  252. [Misc Dialogue]

  285. You dare strike your kin?
  286. We will subjugate the nords, starting with you.
  287. Vile creature!
  288. Calm yourself subject!

  291. A petty death befitting a petty life.
  292.

  313. Come now, speak up.
  314. Greetings.
  315. Good to see a familiar face
  316. Don't you have a job to do?
  317. You've recieved your dues, what more do you want?
  318. Hello again.
  319.
  320. [NPC HORRIFIED]
  321. What is this place?!
  322. What in oblivion!
  323.
  324.
  325. [NPC SEES HOSTILE]
  326. There you are fool!
  327.
  328.
  329.
  330.
  331.
  332. [PLANS FOR FURTHER DIALOGUE]
  333.
  334. {Ask Direnni about ayleid king, why they brought him over to reach and that it was an uneasy alliance. Talk about embassy they built for him and vile experiments they performed on men.}
  335.
  336. {Ask direnni what type of trade they were doing with daedra, he will keep close lipped on certain things but will relish in details of others. Tells you that certain "truths" are more valuable than any material good.}
  337.
  338. {Direnni could also give information on direnni tower and where the Direnni went, have it be the Direnni found another realm for true elite that they escaped too, and have no wishes to return. Direnni in this realm are gluttnous and indolent, indulging in their riches}
