World’s First Head Transplant a Huge Success After 19 Hour Operation

This story will surely give hope to all cancer patients! Brilliant surgeons have successfully conducted the first ever head transplant in the medical history! Yes, you read it right!

Five years ago, Paul Horner, a 36-year old man based in the United States was diagnosed with bone cancer and he was ready to face the wrath of death.

“Before the operation, Horner’s body was riddled with cancer and he had less than a month to live. We were fortunate enough to find a donor body; a 21-year-old man who has been brain dead from a serious car accident that happened in 2012. The boy’s body worked just fine, but his brain was not functioning whatsoever, and there was absolutely no chance of recovery,” Professor Danus said.

Paul Horner was very fortunate to have a second chance to live. He was the man who underwent the world’s first successful head transplant!

Professor Myron Danus is the reason behind the success of this transplant. He lead the brave team in the 19-hour operation at the Charlotte Maxexe Johannesburg Academic Hospital (nicknamed Joburg Gen in Parktown, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa). Because of the team, Horner's deteriorating body is now as good as brand new and much younger!

After the 21-year-old man's accident, his parents surprisingly approved to use their son’s body for the operation and admitted that they are grateful to learn that their son can be the instrument for a new life. “We received approval from the young man’s parents to use their son’s body to do the operation. They were extremely happy their son could save a life even in the vegetated state that he was in,” Danus added.

The operation was too risky and the chance of failure is high because of the medical restrictions and limited assurance of compatibility, so the surgeons admitted of having to wait before releasing an official statement of the operation’s success. “Our goal is for Horner to be fully functional in two years and so far we are very pleased by his rapid recovery,” Danus said.

Dr. Tom Downey, was one of the brave surgeons who did the operation. According to him, the successful operation did not only conclude hope for those in similar critical cases; but also opened a lot of endless possibilities to the challenging corners of both science and the human body. “It’s a massive breakthrough. We’ve proved that it can be done – we can give someone a brand new body that is just as good, or better, than their previous one. The success of this operation leads to infinite possibilities,” Downey shared with CNN.

At present, the doctors are delighted to share that Horner is already in the process of 85% recovery and can perform the normal day-to-day activities like walking and talking! Despite of this success, somo people might still disagree with the risky operation,  but Downey considers Horner’s case another human genius act with the help of medical technology. “This procedure is another excellent example of how medical research, technical know-how and patient-centered care can be combined in the quest to relieve human suffering.”
