  1. Sources for US mortality statistics, 1900-2020
  2.
  3. For 1900-1993: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/vsus.htm
  4. >1900-1940: Special summary volume for the period
  5. >1941-1960: Special summary volume for the period
  6. >1961-1993: Each year's respective volume on mortality
  7.
  8. For 1993-1998: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/mvsr.htm
  9. See the annual summary volumes. Unfortunately, I couldn't find final numbers for these years, so I used provisional numbers.
  10. These were then adjusted based on the pattern observed between the provisional and final numbers in prior years.
  11. The CDC only has VSUS mortality volumes until 1993 on their website, I looked everywhere.
  12.
  13. Up until this point, all data had to be copied in by hand.
  14.
  15. For 1999-2018: https://wonder.cdc.gov/
  16. Do a data request for "Detailed mortality", sort by month
  17.
  18. 2019-2020: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm
  19. Download the spreadsheet "Weekly deaths by state and age"
  20. I converted these to monthly.
  21. If a week overlaps 2 months, say 3 days in Jan and 4 in Feb, I will weight that week's contribution to Jan by 3/7 and Feb by 4/7.
  22.
