45. Los Angeles and other cities around the world are being bombarded by meteors that seem to be slowing down once they hit the earth's atmosphere. The earth is suddenly being invaded by space aliens that have landed off the shore of LA, and who begin killing everybody along the beach. The military is ordered into action. Marine Staff Sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), who was about to retire, is reassigned to a new platoon. The platoon, flown by chopper to the forward operating base at Santa Monica Airport, is being led by a new 2nd Lt. Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez). They are sent on a mission to rescue some civilians who are trapped at the police station within alien territory. They only have 3 hours to complete their mission and get out before the Air Force bombs that zone.
 46. After a meteor shower around the world, the governments learn that it is actually an alien invasion and organize counter-attacks. In Los Angeles, the Marine Sergeant Michael Nantz is ready to retire after a great trauma in the past when he lost all the men under his command in a mission. However, his platoon is assigned to bring the civilians that are sheltered in the Police Department, in an area dominated by the aliens, back to forward operating base (F.O.B.) before the bombs drop on the city. Sgt. Nantz assists 2nd Lieutenant William Martinez and they have to accomplish their mission within three hours. The marines meet few civilians and survivors from other commandos and when they are ready to fly to the base, the helicopter with the wounded marines is shot down and crashes. Now the marines need to reach the base with the civilians through the destroyed streets and highways using a bus. Along their journey, the marines learn how to kill the invaders but only a few of them survive. When the mission is accomplished, Sgt. Nantz and the survivors decide to destroy the alien communication center and consequently their airborne force.
 47. A day before a supposed meteor swarm is going to hit Earth life is good: the Sun is shining, the waves are great and at a whole the surf is great. When the meteors turn out to be something worse though, in this case an alien invasion, battle plans are made. So far for the story.

Alien invasion films come thirteen in a dozen and the backing story for this one doesn't rise above the average - in fact it stays neatly on average. Good enough - the trailers sell the film as a no-brain popcorn film and it does deliver that.

The odd thing with this film is that when it starts rolling and the first action sequences come to life it shows potential to grow to be a more than average film - but then something happens in the middle of it that makes it at the same time completely predictable and entirely thriving on American-Hero-ism. For me it didn't work - it wasn't necessary and instead of just continuing the path that had been chosen at that point the (low/medium layer of) tension was broken and was replaced by an irritation factor.

A true pity as without the heroism the film would have ranked as a very attractive science fiction action and now it can only be watched as half a film.

6 out of 10 unnecessary plot tangents
 48. I recently watched Battle LA and Skyline. I was told by my movie friends on Facebook, or rather, I read their reviews that these films we're cr#p and not worth the trip to the cinema. Mainly due to the plot being so thin. I am so disappointed!! I've always been a sci-fi fan, and I really enjoyed these films. I hope to see more of these movies and I WILL watch at the cinema next time. I found the plot to be totally acceptable and believable: Aliens from space have come to destroy humanity and we have to fight them. It's an action movie! What more plot do you need! The best part for me is the FX! They are AMAZING! Very entertaining, fun and exciting! (I only wish they had shown The Battlestar Galactica pilot movie at the cinema too!) :D
 49. Here's a science-fiction film that's an insult to the words "science" and "fiction," and the hyphen in between them. You want to cut it up to clean under your fingernails.
 50. Nantz, Imlay, Lockett, Harris, Adukwu and Santos are the only survivors. a5c7b9f00b
