Arab League statement - November 12, 2011

Ministerial Council of League of Arab States in its meeting of 12.11.2011 has adopted the following resolution:

1. To suspend the participation of the Syrian delegation in the League and its affiliated bodies as of Nov. 16; or until the Syrian govt fulfils its obligations

2. To provide immediate protection to Syrian civilians by way of swift communication with concerned Arab organization, if killing and violence do not stop, the Secretary General will contact the international HR organizations including the UN, in consultation with the Syrian opposition.

3. To call on the Syrian Army to refrain from being involved in killings;

4. To consider imposing political and economic sanctions on Syria.

5. Call on the Arab states to withdraw their respective ambassadors from Damascus, which is a sovereign decision to each country.

6. To call all Syrian opposition parties to a meeting in the AL headquarters within 3 days, to have a unified view of the coming transitional period in Syria. The AL Ministerial Council will consider the prospects of recognition of the Syrian opposition (National Council).

7. To meet with the opposition after they reach an agreement on paragraph (6)

8. The Council will remain in session in order to closely monitor the situation.
