     ◦ harley doesn't know much about his birth parents, all he does know is that he was put up for adoption at six months, and has absolutely no idea who they are, or if they're still alive. he can only assume that he was born in hanoi, vietnam, judging from the location of the adoption centre he was left at. he was adopted at the age of one by a pair of men, who had chosen to go and adopt a baby boy, since they couldn't have children of his own. his adoptive father, kim jinwoo, was a korean born man who'd moved to australia in his early childhood. he'd later met alexander mclaughlin, an english man who had travelled to australia after turning eighteen to move out of his own birth country. the pair were never married, due to the laws in australia. harley was always close with both of his parents, who treated him like their own. after adopting him, they gave him a hyphenated last name, keeping his registered name, and adding both their last names to the end of it, before giving him an english name as well when he began school, as his teachers and peers often had troubles when it came to pronouncing his vietnamese name. when harley was three, his fathers decided to adopt another child, this time a girl from china by the name of han mei xie. mei xie, also known as elise, was three years younger than harley himself, but they soon became inseparable as siblings, despite not being blood related. they're so close to the point where harley would do almost anything for the younger girl just to see his baby sister happy. he's usually a well mannered person, unless elise is under threat.
     ◦ growing up, harley was never really the popular person, and spend most of his time under the radar. he had a few friends, but he was always completely out of the loop when it came to the rest of the school, never knowing anything about breakups or relationships or anything of the gossip that flew around the school. he usually preferred to hide out in the music room, since that was his safe haven. it could be said that harley was the teacher's pet when it came to music classes, because he was so enthusiastic when it came to the subject. he'd been playing both the piano and the violin since he was younger, and had a love for all sort of instruments. if you were to put an instrument in his hand, he would try his best to try and figure out how to play it. he was also a very good singer, which could of been since his primary school music teachers had often suggested to his parents that they enrol him in singing lessons (which of course, harley begged for when he found out about them until his fathers finally agreed). since one of his fathers was korean, he was brought up around a few korean customs, and of course, learnt to speak korean, since his father was very adamant on the fact that he wanted to introduce both harley and his younger sister to his own culture. harley grew up with a pretty decent understanding of the language, and could pretty much full understand it, and speak it with little difficulty, but couldn't read or write it at all.  so of course, he quickly became familiar with k-pop, as his father used to show him and his sister videos of it quite often.
     ◦ harley decided he wanted to become a performer when he was twelve, after doing a school concert, and falling in love with the rush it gave him. he isn't really sure why he decided to go into the kpop industry, but he voiced the fact that he wanted to try and audition for the korean entertainment companies, and said he wanted to go to a yg audition, because he'd recently found out that yg were holding auditions in australia quite soon. however, his parents decided he was too young, and would not let him audition. he was quite upset about it for a bit, but felt better when his parents agreed to let him audition for the company when he was a bit older. so when they travelled to korea during the summer holidays in australia (which would've been winter in korea) when harley was fifteen, he again said he wanted to audition, and begged his parents to let him audition, and even asked his sister to help him convince them to let hi go. seeing that harley was not going to give up and wouldn't shut up about auditioning for the rest of their six week trip, they finally agreed to let him go. harley was very happy to find out he'd been accepted a few weeks later, while still in korea, and his parents had been shocked, but agreed to let him start training, because they knew how much he wanted it, even if they were still uneasy about letting their underage son stay in a different country to them.

+    ◦ the first impression you get of harley is that he's quiet, and that's not exactly false. he usually is rather quiet, and he has been for most of his life, because he's never felt the need to say something that doesn't need to be said. because of this, people tended to overlook him a lot, because he rarely spoke unless he was spoken to first. he usually takes a while to open up to other people, and usually relies on other people to start a conversation with him first. however, due to this, he tends to just view things from afar, which has made him quite good at reading people without them actually having to tell him anything. people view him as one of the more innocent trainees, as he often has a deer-in-the-headlights expression on his face when people start talking to him. he is however a very good listener, and is the type of person to just sit there quietly and listen to you spill all of your troubles. despite this, he is not good at comforting people, and doesn't know how to deal with crying people, as he's the sort of person to just awkwardly say 'there there' in a weak attempt of comfort. he is not the type of person to lie and make you feel better when you're upset, and will probably just tell you as it is, even if it makes you feel worse. but he has a weird way of helping people figure out their problems without actually telling them what they should do. harley is a rather impatient person, which is something he's been trying to work on. he has a short attention span, and tends to get bored easily, especially if he's just sitting there and not doing anything. he always seems to have a lot of nervous energy, and can be found tapping his fingers, feet and legs against the nearest surface rapidly whenever he's waiting for someone or something. he is a brutally honest person and always tells the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, no matter what the situation. harley can be trusted upon to tell you how it is, without exaggerating, or trying to make it sound better. he absolutely cannot lie to save his life, and may as well be pinocchio, because it is so easy to tell when he's lying. he wears his emotions on his sleeve, and it is not difficult to tell what he's thinking because it is always showing so obviously on his face. he has a bit of a quick temper, and can be easily pissed off, but he's not the type of person to just go and shout it all out. he'll probably just bottle it all up and hold a grudge against the person for the rest of his life. this is one of his major flaws, because he isn't good at talking about his emotions, even though it's obvious what he's feeling. he is also known to hold grudges for a really long time. if you do something to piss him off, he'll remember it the next time you want his help for something. harley is also the type of person who cannot use technology to save his life. you should never leave him alone unsupervised surrounded by electrical equipment, because that is just asking for trouble. he can barely use his phone past texting and calling people, and often has trouble trying to figure out how to switch between the different keyboards/languages on his phone and laptop. on top of this, he often forgets the password to get into his laptop, and always has to go hunting for the sticky note with his password on it. he's still learning to compose music himself, but they don't usually let him around the equipment unsupervised, because harley is the type of person who'd be able to find some way to blow up the whole building without trying.

     ◦ as his adoptive father was korean, he knew a fair bit about korean culture growing up, and of course he was introduced to kpop, which he feel in love with because he liked anything that had to do with music and singing. he knew he wanted to be a performer because of his love of music, but his fathers said he was too young to audition when yg were holding auditions in austrlaia in 2012. he later attended an audition while visiting korea when he was fifteen, after begging his parents to let him, and was actually accepted into the company.

     ◦ he didn't really receive abuse from any of the vocal trainers, because he was a good singer, and had one of the more stable voices compared to some of the other trainees, since that was the one area he excelled in, he was also very good at playing multiple instruments, which earned him brownie points with some of the trainers. they did however still expect him to become better at reading korean so that he wouldn't waste valuable time trying to learn lyrics. he wasn't a rapper, so he never had to meet with any of the rap trainers, but his problem was the dance trainers, because harley has two left feet, and honestly sucks at dancing. the dance trainers expected him to be better than he was, and when they found out that he wasn't, they expected him to somehow become on par with everyone else, even though he practiced twice as much as the others, and he still wasn't as good as them.
 
 — have they ever experienced abuse from other trainees?:
     ◦ he didn't really suffer from any major  verbal abuse either, but he knows that a few of the trainees judge him due to having two parents of the same gender. it didn't really get much worse than the looks that were sent his way, however. he was also often teased sometimes because of his horrible dancing skills, but it wasn't anything too bad, and he mostly just ignored it, telling himself that he was still a more than decent vocalist.
 
 — any other hardships as a trainee:
     ◦ he did struggle as a trainee, but mostly due to his background. when people found out he was adopted, they started to pry, especially when it came to his adoptive parents. as if bothering him about the fact that he was adopted wasn't enough, a few of the trainees seemed to judge him a lot when they found out that he had two fathers, unlike most of the other trainees. he also struggled a lot when it came to the language, because while he can speak and understand korean perfectly fine now, he had a few issues when he first came to korea, since he'd only used the language on a rare occasion at home, and he still has trouble with reading and writing it, which made school difficult for him, on top of all his training.
 
 — biggest struggle as a trainee (talent wise):
     ◦ he struggled a lot with dance, because that was his weakness, and he was a significantly worse dancer than most of the other trainees, which often left him even more frustrated at himself when he couldn't master certain dance moves. he also struggled a bit with school, because he often gets the korean characters mixed up and makes mistakes when reading and writing.
 
 — best moment as a trainee:
     ◦ when he was first accepted as a trainee and first began his training. the other trainees were all very nice to him during the first few days to help him get used to everything. he was a lot happier then, and he sort of wishes they could go back to it, instead of having to compete ruthlessly against each other to debut.
 
 — why do they want to be on sabotage?:
     ◦ he just wants to debut, and if this is what will make yg debut him, then he's all for it. of course, the whole concept of it kind of freaks him out, because he has to compete against the rest of the trainees and he's seen the other survival shows that yg has held before. but harley just wants to debut and perform for other people, even if he's going to have to go through shit to get there first.
