| + | Background: Mari comes from a small family of doctors. Her family was more or less a group of dedicated healers that worked to help provide remedies and cures to their ailments. It was when one particular pestilence occurred, however, that her life wound up turning right upside down. The villagers began dropping dead like flies, their flesh rotting away and blackening, while open sores oozed sickening goop as their bodies slowly bloated with diseased fluids. Sloughs of decayed meat would fall from their bodies as they walked the streets, dying and rotting right at the family's doorsteps. |

| + | |
| - | Dexterity: 3 How well you can use acrobatics/hold on to your weapons |
| + | The family did their best to aid the suffering at the time, and while they'd manage to save the lives of tens, dozens, or even hundreds, it just simply wasn't enough. Their bodies blackened, swelling with infected flesh that popped like zits, spraying the pestilence onto more victims as time went on. The bodies began to form piles in the streets, some left right outside of their home. It wasn't long before her perverse rumours began to spread, of her family being the carriers of the plague, seeking to live off the misfortune of the sickly. |
| - | Endurance: 3 How effectively you resist spells and damage |
| + | |
| However, one day, that rumour was quickly disproved when her brother had fallen ill as well. The poor boy had suffered the same fate as the other villagers, his body first growing pale as soured milk, and from there, he remained bedridden. Mari and her family tirelessly searched for a cure for the dying boy, as his body slowly began to blacken at the fingers from the plague.
| ||
| Mari spent day and night praying over her brother, doing her best to soothe and ease whatever pain he had endured. As time went on however, things only seemed to grow worse. He continued to wither, until...she heard a voice. The voice of a demon, with a horse's skull for a head and the hairless body of a man.
| ||
| The demon offered a remedy. A cure! A way to save her dying brother. All in exchange for her granting the creature her prayer rather than Relvar. She gave it, and she pleaded. The demon just wordlessly raised a vial filled with an amber fluid, which Mari had quickly snatched.
| ||
| "Let him drink, and he will return to the living. Your family will become free of this disease."
| ||
| Marian was ecstatic. Relvar hadn't answered her prayer, yet this...demon, did. Before she could thank him, however, the demon was gone.
| ||
| Marian had quickly moved to offer the drink to her brother, cradling a hand beneath his head and allowing him to drink. She whispered her assurances that everything would be okay, and that the boy was going to return to her family once more. Only for her brother to...cough. More and more, he coughed, hacking phlegm and blood, before his eyes rolled into the back of his head. He'd close his eyes, unmoving.
| ||
| Mari was heartbroken.
| ||
| She trusted a demon, and allowed it to bargain with her. She foolishly accepted its offer.
| ||
| With a heavy heart, she didn't sleep that night, simply curling up beside the bed of her brother...
| ||
| The next morning she'd hear a groan.
| ||
| ||
| ||
| Mari could see her brother had managed to climb his way out of bed, for the first time in weeks, he'd finally walk, with no blackened flesh or sloughs of meat rotting from his bone. It seemed that the true cure was found after all, only...he'd turn around and face her, his eyes glossy and glazed.
| ||
| With a groan, the creature approached Mari with hunger in its eyes, arms outstretched!
| ||
| Mari swiftly grabbed the door and slammed it shut on him, only to hear the eerily gleeful laugh of the demon she spoke to before.
| ||
| "I told you, I would bring them back...as promised, your family is free of the disease, too." The voice rattled.
| ||
| Mari had found her parents quickly approaching her from nearby. Silently approaching her with blood leaking from the corners of their mouths. Without a word, they'd reach, groaning and hungering for her flesh. Mari screamed, and from there, she'd sprint from her home to find a plague of walking corpses shambling among the mounds of bloated, diseased flesh. She ran,doing her best not to scream or wail along the way. For if she wasn't quiet, then the dead would know she wasn't among them.
| ||
| ||
| ---- | |
| ||
| In time, Maria had wandered away from the commotion and found herself stumbling around into an old, abandoned library in the midst of a small hill. The library was silent, but she was desperate for a potential home. And judging from the light that went on there, she'd give the door a knock.
| ||
| A gaunt man stepped out to answer her, looking her up and down. Mari cared little for what would happen to her at this point, and threw herself at his feet, begging and pleading for a haven safe from home.
| ||
| The man just silently lifted her up and took her hand with a kind smile. Warm, despite how cold and haunting he may look. From there, she'd begin her training under him, learning that he was a bit...of a more 'taboo' form of medic. Straying into the more occult arts.
| ||
| Maria eagerly went to research these arts however, for as time went on, she couldn't help but shake that, despite the idea of raising anyone from the dead being so far away, those corpses were brought to life. No matter how sapient they may be, they may still be close to the answer she needed to bring her family back...and so, began her pursue of the dark arts of manipulating bone, blood, and flesh.
