+ | Sonic 2 (2013 Remake) FAQ
- |
+ |
- | Q: What are you playing on, it is emulator?
+ | Q: What is this game, 2013 remake?
- | A: Yeah. I play much better on a keyboard, so emulator is the go for me. Luckily because game time is used for this game emulator makes no difference.
+ | A: This is a remake of the game for iOS and Android from 2013. It added several new features, on a new engine, to deliver a new experience of the game.
- |
+ |
- | Q: Why are you showing the whole emulator?
+ | Q: So what's up with the title? "In Partnership with Amazon"?
- | A: As per the new rules for this game, this is required for emulator runs, to prevent cheating (and is also why my times for Sonic/Knuckles aren't on speedrun.com) They read: "For runs using emulators the entire screen of the emulator used must be captured and the game must be visibly hard resetted before a run. Any use of a savestate after boot voids the run." [Note that this does not apply to every video game, it's a rule in place specifically for the classic sonic series eg S1, S2, S3K, SCD]
+ | A: Yeah, so basically Amazon want to promote their App Store, where you can buy/play this game. So to advertise that, I'm going to be running the game today. In addition to that, there's a prize for someone who can manage to beat the time I get.

+ |
- | Q: Why do you use ingame time and not real time?
+ | Edit Note: Prize is probably a SNES and Amazon coins but not 100% finalised, write in when it is. [Also clarify time span to beat the time?]
- | A: Because http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaMGf1V3MMM

- |
+ | Q: Beat your time? That sounds impossible, you're so good at Sonic 2!?
A: Maybe, but this is a different version. It plays quite differently, despite having the same levels, and I had not even touched this game at all before next week. It's also much more undiscovered on that regard, while Sonic 2 has been run and routed by dozens of runners and tasers for over a decade, this version hasn't been really at all, so there's a lot of potential for new strats and routes that could be a lot faster. I don't even have a time at all, and I'm only going to be running it through this 24 hour period, so you'll have a good chance if you put in the work. |

+ | Q: What are you playing on, it is emulator?
- | Q: What are the main differences between Sonic and Knuckles?
+ | A: No, I'm playing on an Amazon Fire tablet.
- | A: Knuckles has a smaller jump, doesn't have an aerial speedcap, and can glide. He also doesn't have Tails following him, making the notable Metro 3 level wrap impossible, but several other tricks are possible (Casino Night 2 level wrap is the biggest one). For reference, not a single stage plays exactly the same as Sonic and Knuckles (they even get different times on Sky Chase!), but some are quite similar.
+ |
- |
+ | Q: What are some of the new features/differences?
- | Q: So who is faster? Knuckles or Sonic?
+ | A: I'll answer this in 2 parts, those pertaining to the speedrun, and those not.
- | A: No level is the same, but overall it's very close. If you got perfect runs of both, Knuckles would be faster, but he has a lot of harder tricks than Sonic does, so it makes sense his time would be or a slightly lower standard, so the times should be about equal. Atm however Sonic's time (15:08) is lower than Knuckles' (15:34). If you are just talking about highest top speed in the levels, they both run at the same speed.
+ |
- |
+ | In the speedrun: You can play as all 3 characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles), with functionality from S3K. This means Tails can actually fly, amongst other things. Tails can also carry you when you play as Sonic+Tails (or Knuckles+Tails), and can be controlled to do so with 1 player. In addition, you can also choose to play with S3K items (Elemental shields), which also gives Sonic back his insta-shield, as well as the others.
- | Q: Why do you pause before the boss in Aquatic Ruin 2?
+ | Most/all of the glitches no longer work. Every glitch that was used in the old speedrun doesn't work in this version, so you'll be seeing all of the levels. However, there are a few boss skips available in this version that weren't in the old one (Oil Ocean 2 and Hilltop 2). [You just fly over the trigger]
- | A: It loads the boss faster. By pausing before the boss, it loads as soon as the camera is in position with the boss arena, whereas normally it takes about a second and a half to start. It's not to buffer any input, or to time anything, it's just abusing a quirky mechanic in that specific boss.
+ | No aerial speedcap (actually an option you can toggle), amongst several other general engine changes/reworkings of the levels means you take some different paths. Even very subtle things like a wall being solid as a roof now can change a route. For example in Aquatic Ruin 1, you can't jump up to the top path right at the end without going through the loop first, so instead I jump up to the top much earlier. Several things like this occur throughout the whole game.
- |
+ |
- | Q: Ok…you just skipped the whole level in Casino Night 2/Oil Ocean 2/Metro 2, what was that?
+ | Not in speedrun: You can play a fully built Hidden Palace Zone. It's optional through the run (accessed via Mystic Cave 2), and it's slower to take it so it isn't in the run, but it's still really neat. You can all play the beta Hidden Palace zone (called Proto Palace in this game). There is also a hidden 8th special stage.
- | A: That was a level wrap. Basically you go really fast towards the left side of the level and skip past the 0 X co-ordinate, and get a negative position. So then the camera takes a while to figure out where it thinks I really am, and decides I'm at the end of the level
+ | Time Attack Mode, where you can do Individual Level speedruns complete with centiseconds. Also available in this mode is a Boss Rush mode. Online Leaderboards available for all of these levels too.
- |
+ | The toggle option for items actually includes modes where you can randomise all the boxes in the game. This is actually really interesting for ILs, you could randomise them all and then wait until you get speedshoes off the first box. That'll be interesting to play around with, as I'll probably dabble into some ILs after this.
- | Q: Why aren't you entering splits?
+ |
- | A: I can't be bothered until I get out of Chemical Plant. They'll show up after that, all accurate.
+ | Q: Why do you use ingame time and not real time?
- |
+ | A: Because http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaMGf1V3MMM
tl;dr: Getting a worse time on a level can be faster real time because of the time bonus, which is dumb, so we use IGT. |
- | A: The WR is 15:25 (by me) - see: my splits
+ |
- |
+ |
- | Q: Are there glitches in this run?
+ |
- | A: Yes, several.
+ |
Q: What is the World Record? |
A: https://www.speedrun.com/Sonic_2_2013 | See my splits for my time, it's probably not updated on the leaderboard.
