 	The Picts have a long and storied history of martial prowess in Western Europe dating to the usurpation of the Pictish throne by the Circinn dynasty in the late 8th century. Up until the 15th, the Picts have played a central and key role in the preservation of Catholicism, acting both as the primary defender of Catholicism during the First Reformation in the 9th and 10th centuries, as well as the driving force behind the Iberian Crusades. Picts became known as “Papal Shock Troops” for their effectiveness in battle and the terror their blue-painted chain-and-plate armour inspired in Saracens and heretics alike. The Picts were so prolific in their role as the martial arm of Catholicism that they even inspired the Arabic saying, “Hayth yujad altala’, hunak damun”, meaning “where there’s paint, there’s blood”. The Picts weren’t just Papal puppets, however. The Anti-Papal Wars (1119 - 1383) pitted the Pictish kingdom against their former allies, the Pope and his continental followers, after Pictavia refused to outlaw secular investiture. The two-century long conflict resulted in the Pictish sacking of Rome and imposition of puppet Popes a number of times, but was finally ended in the 14th century with the Pictish Reconciliation of Llundain, where the Pictish throne willingly allowed Papal Investiture and acknowledged past faults. More importantly, however, the Picts have a significant history of southwards migration and colonization, assimilation, and destruction of Anglo-Saxon culture on the island. Pictish homesteading, assisted by government seizures of Anglo-Saxon land, resulted in the re-Celtification of much of Britain, and now Pictish, not English, rules the island.
